Yes. A Mac mini can play a prerecorded video into a YouTube Live broadcast: load the file in OBS Studio, send OBS’s encoder feed to YouTube, and monitor the preview before going live. The Mac mini must stay powered on and connected for the duration of this local method. You can play one file or loop it; for a playlist, OBS offers a VLC-based source if VLC is installed.
Before you set up the stream
Check that your channel can go live
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so complete activation well before your event. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
Confirm your video and audio rights
You are responsible for having the rights to everything in the video, including music, and for complying with YouTube’s policies. Decide whether the stream should be public, private, or unlisted before sending the feed. Take care with test broadcasts: check their privacy settings, and never reveal your stream key on screen or in a recording.
Schedule the event in YouTube Studio
If you want an upcoming watch page that viewers can find and set a reminder for, schedule an encoder stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.

- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live.
- In Live Control Room, open the Manage tab and create or schedule the stream. Set its title, description, audience and visibility as appropriate.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event. Keep the key private: it functions as the credential that lets an encoder send video to your channel.
YouTube’s interface can change, so follow the labels currently shown in Studio. If a key is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update OBS with the replacement.
Set up the video in OBS Studio
Play one local file
- Open OBS and create a scene for the broadcast.
- In the scene’s Sources panel, choose + > Media Source.
- Name the source, then select the local video file. OBS’s Media Source supports macOS and common formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM.
- Enable Loop only if you want the file to repeat after it ends; looping is off by default. Enable the restart-playback option if you want the video to begin again when the source becomes active.
- Check that the video fits the canvas and that its audio is reaching OBS’s mixer. Play the source and listen through the same audio path you intend to use during the broadcast.
Play a playlist
For multiple files, add OBS’s VLC Video Source, select the playlist files, and enable playlist looping if you want them to repeat. This source appears only when VLC is installed. Check the order, transitions and audio levels before streaming; playlist playback is not the same as a scheduled YouTube event, which you set up separately in Studio.

Connect OBS to YouTube
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream.
- Choose YouTube as the service if that option is available, then enter the stream key from YouTube Studio. If using a custom connection, enter the stream URL and key provided in Live Control Room.
- Apply the settings and return to the main OBS window. Do not paste the key into a public chat, overlay, screenshot or stream description.
- Before the event, start a private or unlisted test broadcast if you need to validate the complete setup. Confirm the correct event and privacy setting in Studio first.
YouTube explains that a stream key and server address let the encoder send a feed for YouTube to receive. Its guidance recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Use the ingest option YouTube provides for the event, and check YouTube’s encoder setup instructions if the OBS service or connection labels differ.

Choose video, audio and network settings
Match output to the source and Mac
For an ordinary prerecorded 1080p SDR video, use a 1080p SDR output rather than adding 4K or HDR complexity without a reason. The file, OBS output, Mac mini and network all need to support the chosen format reliably. YouTube recommends Rec. 709 for SDR.
YouTube’s current encoder guide lists these recommended video bitrates. They are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular Mac mini or internet connection can sustain them.

| Output | H.264 recommendation | AV1 or H.265 recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
These values are from YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance. Select a codec that your OBS version, Mac mini and YouTube ingest support. YouTube’s guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, with up to 60 fps.
Use stable encoder and audio settings
- Rate control: CBR.
- Keyframes: two-second interval recommended; do not exceed four seconds.
- Audio: AAC or MP3. For stereo, YouTube recommends a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps audio bitrate. For 5.1 audio over RTMP/RTMPS, use AAC.
- Transport: RTMPS is YouTube’s recommendation.
Set these in OBS’s output and video settings where available, then verify the encoder output matches the event you scheduled. The exact controls can vary with OBS version, encoder and hardware.

Leave upload headroom
Check outbound upload performance rather than relying on download speed. YouTube’s network guidance recommends 20% headroom above the stream’s bitrate. If the connection fluctuates, reduce output resolution, frame rate or bitrate and test again instead of setting a bitrate at the connection’s limit. A wired network connection can also avoid some wireless variability, though it cannot fix a weak or unstable internet service.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test, start and monitor the broadcast
- Play the complete intended file or representative playlist in OBS. Check moving video, scene framing, audio clarity, synchronization and volume; a static image alone will not reveal all playback issues.
- Start the encoder feed and wait for YouTube Studio’s preview and stream-health information. Confirm the picture and audio there before making the event public or starting it for viewers.
- Check the watch page on the channel and, if relevant, a mobile device. Make sure the correct scheduled event is receiving the feed.
- Keep OBS and YouTube Studio visible during the broadcast. Watch for dropped frames, audio loss, a frozen source or YouTube stream-health warnings.
- For event preparation, YouTube suggests setup at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder 15 minutes before the scheduled event. These are preparation recommendations, not technical prerequisites.
End the stream cleanly
When the program is over, stop the event in YouTube as appropriate and stop sending content from the encoder; YouTube says ending the encoder feed ends the stream. Its operational guidance advises stopping the encoder after the event has stopped on YouTube. Confirm the final state in Studio and check for the archive. YouTube automatically archives streams that run for less than 12 hours.
Common problems and fixes
- YouTube will not accept the stream: Verify the channel, check for restrictions, and confirm live streaming has finished activating. Recheck that OBS uses the current event’s stream key and URL.
- The preview is black or the file will not play: Confirm the Media Source points to the correct local file and format, that the source is visible in the scene, and that playback is not paused or at the end. Try a supported common format such as MP4 if the file does not decode.
- The video ends too soon: Turn on Loop for a single Media Source, or enable looping for the VLC playlist if continuous repeat is intended.
- The playlist source is missing: Install VLC, then restart or refresh OBS and add the VLC Video Source.
- Viewers hear no audio or hear distortion: Check the source’s audio output and OBS mixer meters, then listen to a test. Confirm the selected audio codec and sample rate are supported by the output configuration.
- YouTube reports unstable health or frames drop: Measure upload capacity, leave the recommended headroom, and lower the bitrate or output settings until the connection is stable. Retest with the same video and audio configuration.
- The wrong event or visibility is shown: Check the Live Control Room event and privacy settings before starting. Do not assume a test feed is private unless Studio says so.
- The stream will not end or the archive is missing: Confirm the broadcast has ended in Studio, then stop the encoder feed as directed by YouTube. Check the stream’s final state and archive in Studio.
Other ways to keep prerecorded video live
OBS on a Mac mini is a flexible local-file method, but the computer must remain on, the software must keep running, and the internet connection must stay available. YouTube’s encoder directory also lists Ecamm as Mac live-production software, Gyre for continuous prerecorded streams, and AJA HELO Plus PlayToStream as a specialized appliance that can schedule prerecorded media and stream directly to YouTube without a computer. Those are distinct approaches, not requirements for the OBS workflow; verify current features and terms with each provider.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube-only continuous prerecorded stream without leaving your Mac mini running, StreamNeo keeps uploaded videos live from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays your uploads, not a camera feed. Every slot supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, without re-encoding or quality tiers, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required (one free day per account); the Monthly price is $9.99 per month. Visit StreamNeo for details, or start the free day.
