You can turn a video-game character into a physical figure, but a game model is rarely ready to print as-is. The practical workflow is to sculpt or customize a model, make sure its details and geometry suit a physical object, check it in a slicer, then print it yourself or use a service. Before sharing or selling a file, check the game publisher’s rules for that specific use.
Choose how you’ll make the character
Start by deciding whether you want a bust, a one-piece figure, or a multipart miniature. That choice affects how much of the character you need to model, how you’ll pose it, and whether thin or awkwardly placed features should be redesigned for printing.
Customize or sculpt a model
A 3D application such as Blender is one option; it is not required for every workflow. Roblox Creator Hub’s character-creation template guide illustrates one route: choose a template, sculpt and texture the character, prepare the asset, and export it. That guide is for Roblox assets, so treat it as a modeling workflow example, not a universal print-preparation recipe. Blender’s official license page says the official version may be used commercially: Blender license.
If you are starting with a game character you already customized, do not assume the game offers a supported way to export it as a printable model. Whether that is possible depends on the game and its tools. A practical alternative is to recreate the appearance in a modeling application or begin with a template or original sculpt.

Make the intended details physical
A character’s appearance may rely on textures rather than raised or recessed geometry. A painted emblem, skin marking, or fabric pattern may look clear on screen but disappear at miniature scale unless you sculpt it as relief or apply it as a painted finish after printing. Likewise, decide whether hair, weapons, clothing, and accessories should be modeled as part of the figure or as separate pieces.
Prepare the model so it can be sliced
Game-ready assets and printable solids have different needs. A game model can contain separate meshes, a rig, or surface details represented only by textures. For printing, the intended object needs closed, solid geometry that a slicer can interpret. Prusa’s modeling guidance explains why manifold geometry matters for slicing.

- Inspect the mesh. Look for open holes, intersecting or disconnected parts, and non-manifold edges. Repair the geometry so the intended printable parts form closed solids.
- Choose the pose and scale. Thin limbs, fingers, weapons, hair, and capes can be fragile or difficult to support. A pose that looks good on screen may need adjustment to print reliably.
- Plan orientation and supports. Overhangs may need supports, and support contact can leave rougher surfaces. With FFF/FDM printing, orientation also affects strength because the part’s strength can vary by direction. Prusa covers these trade-offs in its modeling guidance.
- Consider splitting the figure. Separate parts can make supports easier to place or remove and can help with assembly, but add alignment and fit decisions. Plan connection points before exporting.
- Export and inspect in a slicer. STL represents the model as a triangle mesh and imports as a single object, even when it contains several shells. In PrusaSlicer, 3MF supports multiple objects natively. See Prusa’s 3MF file-format explanation. Open the export in the slicer you plan to use and check that the expected parts, scale, orientation, and supports appear correctly.
Choose a printing method
The right process depends on the character’s detail, size, geometry, and your tolerance for cleanup. Resin can be a reasonable choice when small sculpted detail is a priority; FFF/FDM can suit a figure when the chosen printer’s build volume, material, and geometry work for it. Neither process is universally better for every character.

You do not need to own a printer to make a figure: a suitable print service is another route. Compare the service’s supported materials, build volume, part limits, and post-processing options against your model before submitting it.

Check the rights before sharing or selling a file
Being able to access or recreate a game character does not establish permission to sell, distribute, or upload a printable model. Publisher policies differ, and permission for one kind of fan activity does not automatically cover another.
- Electronic Arts: EA says fans can use game content, including gameplay and original characters, for certain personal uses and projects, subject to its stated principles. Its policy also prohibits selling fan art or merchandise using that content and describes limited exceptions, such as passive video monetization. Read the EA content policy in full rather than treating the personal-use language as blanket permission.
- Epic Games: Epic defines covered fan content as personal and non-commercial under its fan-art policy.
- CD PROJEKT RED: The company has its own fan-content guidelines, last updated December 10, 2020.
- Roberts Space Industries: Its Star Citizen fan-content FAQ says it does not grant permission to post, publish, upload, list, or offer its content for sale or download through 3D-modeling or print-on-demand sites.
These examples show why you should check the current policy for the specific game and intended use before publishing or selling a model. They are not a complete survey of publisher rules or legal advice.
