You can customize a WooCommerce Add to Cart button in three distinct ways: change its wording with PHP filters, redesign it with CSS or global styles, or edit its placement and controls in the Site Editor when a block theme is active. The correct method depends on whether your store uses classic templates or block templates and whether you are changing product pages, shop loops, or both.

Choose the customization method that matches your store
First identify the theme architecture and the scope of the change. A classic theme renders button areas through PHP templates and exposes separate filters for single-product pages and product archives. A block theme uses templates assembled in the Site Editor; its Add to Cart + Options (Beta) block combines the button with quantity and, where supported, variation controls.

Do not assume that a visual change made in one location affects every button. A button in a product loop can use a different template and filter from the button on the product page.

Check your theme, template, and product types first
Before editing anything, record the current behavior. Open a simple product, a variable product, an out-of-stock product, and a product archive or shop page. Note the existing label, whether a quantity field appears, whether options must be selected, and what happens after a successful click.
- Confirm whether the active theme is classic or block-based. Block-template editing is available only when a block theme is active.
- Identify the pages that need the change: single-product pages, shop and category loops, related products, or a combination.
- Back up the site or use staging before adding PHP or broad CSS.
- Check whether a plugin or theme already changes WooCommerce button text. Two filters or competing style rules can make the final result appear inconsistent.
- Keep an administrator account and a way to disable the snippet available in case a syntax error prevents normal access.
A variable product is not equivalent to a simple product. Customers may need to choose attributes before the purchase control becomes available, so a new label must not imply that an immediate purchase is possible when selection is still required.

WooCommerce provides separate filters for the two most common contexts:
woocommerce_product_single_add_to_cart_textchanges the label on a single-product page.woocommerce_product_add_to_cart_textchanges the label used in product archives and shop loops.
Use one filter when only one context should change, or both when the wording should be consistent. This example deliberately gives the two contexts different labels:

} );The translation function keeps the returned strings compatible with WooCommerce’s translation system. Replace the English text with wording that accurately describes the next action in your store. For example, a shop-loop label should not promise an immediate checkout if the click merely opens a product page or adds an item through an asynchronous loop control.
Where to put the PHP
Place the snippet in a child theme’s functions.php file or in a code-snippet plugin. WooCommerce specifically warns: “Avoid adding custom code directly to your parent theme’s functions.php file as this will be wiped entirely when you update the theme.” A parent-theme update can therefore remove a working button customization without any change to WooCommerce itself.

When using a code-snippet plugin, enable the snippet for the appropriate site scope and keep a plain-text copy in your deployment notes. When using a child theme, confirm that the child theme is active and that its functions.php file has valid PHP syntax. Do not include a second opening PHP tag if the file already starts in PHP mode.

Change one context without changing the other
To alter only the product-page button, add only the single-product filter. To alter only archive buttons, add only the archive filter. This separation is useful when a shop loop needs a browsing-oriented phrase while the product page uses a purchase-oriented phrase.
After saving, clear any page, object, or browser cache that may preserve the old HTML. Check both contexts in a private browser window and while logged out, because cache layers can serve different versions to administrators and shoppers.
Use the Site Editor in a block theme
Block themes assemble WooCommerce layouts from templates and blocks rather than requiring every change to be made in PHP. The relevant control is the Add to Cart + Options (Beta) block in the Single Product template. It provides the purchase button plus quantity and, for supported products, variation controls.

- Open Templates and select Single Product. The exact panel wording can vary slightly by WordPress and WooCommerce version.
- Select the Add to Cart + Options (Beta) block. If it is absent, insert that block in the location where the purchase controls should appear.
- Use the block settings to adjust the controls and available button styles. Keep quantity and variation controls in the same logical product area so shoppers can complete required selections.
- Save the template, then open several products to verify that the block is receiving the expected product data.
WooCommerce describes the Site Editor as a way to customize product pages, templates, and catalog layouts without editing every template file manually. This is the practical advantage of a block theme: the layout and supported button settings can be changed in the editor rather than by copying PHP template files.
If the block is missing or behaves differently
Confirm that the active theme is genuinely a block theme and that you are editing the Single Product template, not a page that happens to display a product shortcode. A template can also contain more than one purchase-related block. Select the block that actually renders the button and inspect the result on a simple and a variable product.
Some products require attributes before the add control can be used. If the button remains disabled until a variation is selected, that is a product-selection requirement rather than a styling failure. Do not remove the variation controls merely to make the button appear active.
Style a block-theme button safely
Start with the block’s built-in settings and global styles. They are less fragile than selectors that depend on the precise nesting of internal markup. WooCommerce’s block documentation recommends using global styles through the Site Editor or theme.json and especially discourages CSS selectors that rely on one block being a descendant of another.

When custom CSS is necessary, the documented button component class is .wc-block-components-button. A minimal example is:

}Keep the rule as narrow as the intended scope. If the change belongs only to a Single Product template, place it in that template’s style context or add a product-page scope supplied by your theme. If it is intended for every WooCommerce block button, understand that a global rule may also affect cart, checkout, or other block interfaces that use the same component class.
Design every interaction state
A static color change is incomplete. Define and test normal, hover, focus, active, and disabled states. Focus must remain visible for keyboard users, and text must remain readable against both normal and hover backgrounds. A disabled button should look unavailable without being mistaken for a loading failure.
Do not style only the first button you see in a desktop screenshot. Check long translated labels, increased browser text size, narrow phone widths, and buttons beside quantity or variation controls. A fixed width can clip a longer label; allowing the label to wrap or giving the control sufficient horizontal space is safer than hiding text.
Style buttons in a classic theme
Classic themes do not share one universal button markup. Inspect the rendered HTML with your browser’s developer tools, identify the class used by the specific product-page or archive button, and scope the rule to the product context. Keep that CSS in the child theme or the site’s Additional CSS area, according to your maintenance workflow.
Inspect both contexts separately. A selector that matches a single-product button may not match a loop button, and a broad selector such as a generic anchor or input rule can unintentionally change navigation links, quantity controls, or unrelated theme buttons.
- Open the target page and use the inspector to select the actual Add to Cart element.
- Record the stable classes and the nearest product-page or archive scope supplied by the theme.
- Add the smallest rule that changes the required property: color, padding, border, typography, or size.
- Reload with caches cleared and verify that only the intended buttons changed.
- Repeat for the other context if the shop and product-page markup differ.
Theme updates can alter private markup, so avoid building a long chain of selectors that depends on nested elements or generated class names. If an update changes the markup, re-inspect the button and revise the scoped rule rather than escalating specificity indefinitely.

Change shop and product-page wording independently
The two PHP filters are the cleanest way to keep labels independent in a classic theme. The single-product filter controls the purchase area on the product page; the archive filter controls buttons rendered in shop, category, and other product loops that use the archive context.

If an archive button still shows the old wording after the archive filter is present, inspect whether that list is rendered by a custom block, a shortcode, or a theme component that does not use the standard archive filter. Avoid adding random filters until you know which rendering path is active.
Account for product type and button state
Simple products
A simple product normally exposes the add control without requiring attribute selection. Test the new text and confirm that the click still adds the expected quantity or opens the expected confirmation behavior.
Variable products
Variable products can require one or more option selections before they can be added. The button may be disabled, may prompt for a selection, or may be accompanied by variation controls. A label such as “Buy now” should not conceal that prerequisite. In a block theme, keep the variation controls supplied by the Add to Cart + Options block. In a classic theme, do not remove template elements that the variation script needs.
Out-of-stock and unavailable products
Check how the theme represents unavailable inventory. A global color or typography rule should not make an unavailable control look identical to an active purchase control. If the product has no usable add action, preserve the theme’s disabled or unavailable state and make sure your CSS does not override it.
Quantity controls
Changing button height or padding can create alignment problems beside a quantity field. Test keyboard navigation from quantity to button, visible focus on each control, and narrow widths where the controls may wrap.

- Context: single-product page, shop loop, category loop, search result, and any custom product list that matters to your store.
- Product: simple, variable, out-of-stock, and any product with unusually long names or option labels.
- State: normal, hover, keyboard focus, active or pressed, disabled, and any loading state shown by the theme or block.
- Device: desktop and mobile widths, including a narrow viewport where labels might wrap.
- Session: logged-in administrator and logged-out shopper, with caches cleared.
- Language: every translation your store publishes, because translated labels can be longer than the source phrase.
For a functional test, select all required options on a variable product, set a quantity, activate the button with a mouse, then repeat with the keyboard. Confirm the cart contains the intended product and quantity. Test an invalid or incomplete selection to ensure the interface still explains what the shopper must do.
Troubleshoot common failures
The text did not change
- Check that the snippet is active and contains no PHP syntax error.
- Confirm that you used the single-product filter for a product page and the archive filter for a shop or loop button.
- Inspect whether a custom block, shortcode, or theme component renders the button outside the standard filter path.
- Clear page, object, and browser caches, then test while logged out.
- Search for another snippet or plugin that runs later and replaces the label.
Only some buttons changed
Different templates may use different rendering paths. Compare the HTML and template context of a changed button with one that did not change. Apply the appropriate filter or edit the specific block template rather than broadening CSS or adding duplicate PHP blindly.

The button looks right but cannot be used
Check for required variation selections, a disabled state, inventory restrictions, JavaScript errors, and an overlay or layout element covering the control. Visual CSS cannot make a product purchasable when the product configuration is incomplete.
Mobile layout is broken
Look for fixed widths, excessive horizontal padding, long translated labels, and quantity controls that no longer fit beside the button. Reduce spacing at a narrow breakpoint only after confirming that focus outlines and tap targets remain clear.
A theme update removed the customization
If the code was placed in the parent theme’s functions.php, move it to a child theme or code-snippet plugin. If CSS depended on private markup, re-inspect the updated HTML and replace brittle selectors with the documented block class, global styles, or a smaller contextual rule.
Keep the implementation maintainable
Record what was changed, where it lives, which contexts it targets, and which product types were tested. Keep labels in one snippet rather than scattering nearly identical filters across several files. Use descriptive comments around custom code, but do not leave obsolete selectors or disabled snippets that make future debugging ambiguous.
For block themes, prefer editor-supported settings and global styles over selectors that depend on internal nesting. WooCommerce block markup and class internals can change, while documented interfaces are the safer maintenance boundary. For classic themes, use the theme’s documented hooks when moving or augmenting button areas; Storefront’s published action and filter references are useful when that theme is active.

The safest customization is the smallest one that meets the requirement: use a filter for text, editor settings for supported block options, and scoped styles for appearance. Treat product type, template context, accessibility, and update safety as part of the button—not as afterthoughts.
