Start by identifying where the voices are coming from: Xbox party chat and a game’s own voice chat use different controls. For party-chat accessibility, Xbox announced speech-to-text and text-to-speech options under Settings > Ease of Access > Game and chat transcription. To balance voices against music and effects in a game, use that game’s own audio or accessibility menu; the available controls vary by title.
First, identify the chat you want to adjust
Xbox party chat is the console’s group voice and text chat. In-game chat is provided by an individual game and may have its own voice, music, and effects settings. Changing one does not necessarily change the other, so check which chat you are using before adjusting audio.
Make Xbox party chat easier to follow
Xbox’s 2021 announcement described two party-chat accessibility features: speech-to-text can display other party members’ speech as text, and text-to-speech can read aloud a message you type. Xbox published the path Settings > Ease of Access > Game and chat transcription for these options. The announcement and June 2021 update document that historical path; console software may use updated labels or menus. See Xbox Wire’s feature announcement and the June 2021 Xbox update.
- Open Settings on the Xbox console.
- Look under Ease of Access for Game and chat transcription. If the labels differ, use the current console menu or Xbox accessibility guidance rather than assuming the older wording is unchanged.
- Choose the transcription option that fits how you want to communicate: viewing incoming party speech as text, or having typed party messages read aloud.
These features concern party chat; they do not establish that a game’s separate voice chat will be transcribed or synthesized.

Separate game chat from music and effects
For audio in a particular game, open its Audio or Accessibility menu and look for separate sliders or mute controls for voice or chat, music, and sound effects. If the game exposes those categories, lower the sounds competing with conversation while leaving the sounds you want to hear at a comfortable level. Some games do not offer every category or a separate voice-chat control.
Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 105 recommends that developers provide separate volume controls for audio types such as music, effects, dialogue, voice chat, and screen readers. It is developer guidance, not a guarantee that every game implements each control. Guideline 120 addresses communication features such as voice and text chat, reinforcing that the available experience depends on how a game implements them.

Handle interface sound effects separately
Console interface sounds are distinct from both party chat and a game’s audio mix. Xbox Support has guidance titled “How to mute sound effects,” but its current instructions could not be verified here. Check the current Xbox Support page or the live console settings menu for the applicable control rather than relying on an unverified menu path.

If chat is still difficult to hear
- Check whether the voices come from party chat or the game, then adjust the relevant settings rather than changing unrelated audio.
- If a headset is connected, look in the console’s current headset or chat-audio options for available balance or volume controls. The labels and controls vary with Xbox software and hardware, so follow the options shown for your setup.
- A headset is optional. Console accessibility features and any available in-game audio controls do not require buying one. If you choose to use a headset, confirm that it is compatible with your specific console and supports the controls you want.
