How to Build a Cleric in Halls of Torment for Reliable Crowd Control

Use Radiant Aura as a broad-coverage core, add slow-focused options where current upgrades support them, and preserve damage and defense for what gets through.

For a Cleric built to control crowds, start with Radiant Aura and prioritize attack speed and area so its coverage reaches enemies repeatedly. Add a slow-focused option such as Transfixion if its current upgrades support your plan, but keep enough damage to handle durable targets and enough defense to survive enemies that get through. No single loadout is established as universally best, and the exact gear list below comes from a mobile guide.

Start with coverage, then add control and damage

Radiant Aura is a reasonable foundation: a Pocket Gamer Cleric build guide updated September 4, 2026 names it as the character’s strongest-fitting ability and emphasizes area and attack-speed scaling. Those stats support repeated, broad coverage; they do not by themselves prove that every enemy will be controlled or that a particular build will clear every stage.

Use supporting abilities to answer a need

The guide’s supporting picks are Lightning Strikes, Phantom Needles, and Astronomer’s Orb. Treat them as damage or support options from that published build, not as a tested ranking for crowd control. Choose additions according to what your run lacks: more coverage for groups, or a distinct damage answer for tougher individual enemies. Taking abilities indiscriminately can also dilute the upgrade opportunities you want.

Consider Transfixion for a slow-focused variant

Transfixion with slow-related upgrades is a plausible choice when the goal is to hinder advancing enemies. Players have described using it for slow-focused play, but that evidence is anecdotal rather than an official or controlled Cleric build test. Check the current in-game ability and trait descriptions before relying on a specific slow chance, duration, or interaction.

Balance control with damage and survival

The Pocket Gamer guide prioritizes attack speed, damage, area, range, force, and pickup. For a crowd-control approach, think of these as complementary roles rather than a proven universal order: attack speed and area help maintain repeated coverage; damage helps the build remain effective as enemies get tougher; range and force can shape how attacks reach or affect threats; pickup supports collection. The guide’s listed blessing priorities include attack speed, damage, area, movement speed, pickup, and revive.

Control is not a substitute for surviving mistakes. Movement and defensive investments reduce the cost of enemies reaching the Cleric, while a revive can provide another chance if the chosen defense fails. Adjust the balance to the problem you encounter instead of sacrificing all damage or survivability to maximize one control effect.

Use the published gear list as a starting point

The September 4, 2026 Pocket Gamer guide lists this equipment for its Cleric build. It is a mobile-build reference, not proof that each item is best for crowd control; check the item names and effects in your own edition.

Account for the current slow and Affliction notes

Chasing Carrots’ official rolling patch feed says, “Slow can now reach up to 70% and has no stack limit.” The same feed reports that the Cleric’s main weapon no longer applies Affliction by default. These dated balance changes mean older advice that assumes a particular slow cap or automatic Affliction may be out of date; consult the live ability and weapon descriptions as well as the official Halls of Torment patch feed.

The developer feed also includes other ability balance changes, so an older tier list should not be treated as a current build guarantee. The specific gear reference above is a mobile guide; item availability and names may differ by platform or version. An official Steam announcement is available, but it is not a complete Cleric build guide.

Judge a variant by the problem it solves

  • Crowd coverage: Does the area, attack frequency, and attack pattern reach approaching enemies consistently?
  • Debuff application: Do the ability and chosen upgrades explicitly apply slow or another useful status in your current version?
  • Priority-target damage: Can the build deal with a durable enemy without giving up all its crowd coverage?
  • Survivability: Do movement, defense, healing, or revive choices give you room when control fails?
  • Version and platform fit: Do the item and upgrade names match your edition and current patch?

For the “slow 100,000 enemies” quest discussed by players, a slow-focused ability and upgrades are a sensible direction to investigate, but the cited sources do not establish a guaranteed quest strategy. One player discussion of Crippling Strikes is available on r/hallsoftorment; treat it as player experience, not authoritative mechanics documentation.
