Start by protecting your data and recording exactly what failed. Disconnect nonessential devices, undo recent hardware changes, test in Safe Mode, then run Windows, driver, firmware, memory, storage and manufacturer diagnostics in that order. A stop code, diagnostic code or memory dump gives you far better evidence than guessing from the game or application that happened to be open.

What counts as a hardware issue?

Microsoft defines a hardware error as “a malfunction of a hardware component in a computer system.” That can mean a failed part such as memory, storage or a graphics card, but it can also involve the driver or firmware that allows Windows to communicate with that part. The visible symptom alone rarely identifies the cause.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Microsoft’s root-cause analysis of failures found 70% attributed to third-party driver code, 10% to hardware, 5% to Microsoft code and 15% with an unknown cause. Those figures are Microsoft’s analysis, not a universal failure rate for every gaming PC. They do show why replacing parts immediately is often the wrong first move: a driver or operating-system fault can look exactly like failing hardware.

Clues that point toward hardware

  • The problem began after installing RAM, a drive, expansion card, USB accessory or other physical component.
  • The computer freezes or restarts before Windows loads, remains stuck at the BIOS screen, or fails a manufacturer diagnostic.
  • You hear repeated abnormal noises from a mechanical drive or smell overheated or burnt electronics.
  • Memory tests report errors, a drive reports failing health or repeated read errors, or a vendor test supplies an error and validation code.
  • The machine becomes unusually hot and shuts down even before a demanding game starts.

Clues that point toward software or drivers

  • Windows starts normally, but the crash appears only after a particular driver, update, game or utility loads.
  • The system is stable in Safe Mode, where only a minimal set of drivers and services runs.
  • Updating, rolling back or removing a recently changed driver alters the symptom.
  • The named game or application crashes while Windows, other applications and hardware tests remain stable. Microsoft notes that a user-mode application can expose an underlying driver, hardware or operating-system fault, so the application named in an error is not automatically the root cause.

Do this before testing anything

Stop repeated trial-and-error restarts if the computer is hot, making unusual sounds or smells burnt. Shut it down, disconnect power and let it cool. Continuing to operate a failing drive or overheated system can make data loss worse.

  1. Protect current work. Save open files if Windows is stable. Back up important documents, game saves and other irreplaceable data to another drive or a trusted cloud service before running repairs, resets or reinstalls.
  2. Record the symptom. Write down the exact stop code, on-screen message, beep pattern, temperature warning, BIOS code, diagnostic error and validation code. Photograph the screen if it disappears during a restart.
  3. Build a timeline. Note what changed immediately beforehand: a Windows update, graphics-driver update, new memory, a storage upgrade, a peripheral, a BIOS or firmware flash, a move to a different power outlet, or a new game.
  4. Remove nonessential connections. Leave only the display, keyboard and mouse connected. Disconnect USB hubs, external drives, capture devices, controllers, printers and other accessories for the first test.
  5. Do not open a warranty-covered chassis casually. Check the manufacturer’s service terms before removing a panel or replacing a part. If you smell burning, see physical damage or suspect a swollen battery, stop and arrange professional service.

A practical hardware-versus-software decision tree

1. Undo the latest physical change

Power off fully, unplug the computer and remove newly installed RAM, storage, expansion cards, USB devices or other hardware. Reconnect only the original configuration and try again. Microsoft specifically recommends removing recently added hardware when unexpected restarts or stop errors recur.

If the fault disappears, verify that the added part is compatible with the system’s model, slot, capacity and firmware. Reseat it according to the manufacturer’s instructions and test again. If the failure returns, leave the part disconnected and contact the seller or manufacturer rather than repeatedly forcing boots.

2. Try Safe Mode

Safe Mode helps separate a basic Windows installation from third-party drivers and startup software. From a working desktop, open Settings > System > Recovery, choose Advanced startup > Restart now, then select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart. Choose the Safe Mode option after the restart.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Windows will not reach the desktop, interrupt normal startup several times or boot from Windows installation media to enter Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), then use Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings. Menu names can vary by Windows edition and manufacturer.

A stable Safe Mode session suggests a driver or startup-service conflict, but it does not prove the physical hardware is healthy. Use the stable session to remove a recently installed driver, roll back an update when that option is available, and copy important files before further work.

3. Install current software that controls the hardware

When Windows is stable, install pending Windows updates. Then obtain current drivers, BIOS updates and firmware from the computer or component manufacturer for the exact model. Use the vendor’s instructions for BIOS and firmware: interrupting those updates can leave a system unable to start.

Restart after each significant change so you know which action altered the symptom. Avoid installing several unrelated driver packages at once; if the issue returns, the timeline will be harder to interpret.

Test memory and storage before replacing parts

Memory (RAM)

Run Windows Memory Diagnostic by opening the Start menu, searching for Windows Memory Diagnostic, selecting Restart now and check for problems, and allowing the test to complete. The result appears after Windows restarts; it may also be visible in Event Viewer under the memory-diagnostics results.

Many manufacturers provide a more extensive memory test in their pre-boot diagnostic environment. If a test reports errors, power down and test modules individually only if the manufacturer’s service instructions permit it. A single failing module, an incompatible kit or a poorly seated module can produce similar symptoms. Do not treat one successful pass as proof that intermittent memory errors are impossible; record the test name, date and result.

Storage health and file-system checks

Check the drive with Windows’ built-in health information and the drive manufacturer’s diagnostic utility when available. Run a file-system check from an elevated Terminal or Command Prompt only after backing up data. A typical Windows command is chkdsk C: /scan; Windows may request a restart for repairs that require exclusive access.

Keep adequate free space. Microsoft client guidance recommends roughly 10–15% free disk space. A drive that reports failing health, produces repeated read errors or disappears intermittently should be treated as at risk: stop intensive testing, copy data immediately and plan a replacement or professional recovery. File-system repair cannot make physically failing media reliable.

Overheating, shutdowns and gaming loads

Thermal protection can shut a computer down to prevent damage. Dell warns that overheating can damage or degrade the processor, memory and other hardware. A gaming workload can expose a cooling problem that ordinary desktop use does not.

  1. Shut down and let the system cool if it is hot to the touch, throttling, warning about temperature or powering off.
  2. Place a laptop on a hard, level surface; do not block intake or exhaust vents with bedding, clothing or a soft lap surface. Keep a desktop’s vents clear of walls and clutter.
  3. Clean dust only as the manufacturer permits. Follow its instructions for filters, fans and access panels; do not force a fan to spin with uncontrolled compressed air.
  4. Install the current system, graphics, BIOS and firmware updates after the machine is cool and stable.
  5. Run the manufacturer’s thermal and hardware diagnostics. If a Dell diagnostic fails, record both the error code and validation code for support.

A cooling pad or additional fan cannot correct a failed fan, blocked heatsink, dried thermal interface or defective sensor. If shutdowns continue at low load, stop gaming on the machine until a diagnostic or technician identifies the cause.

Why a PC keeps restarting or showing a blue screen

Microsoft says Windows 11 might shut down or restart unexpectedly when a serious problem occurs. A blue-screen or stop-code event is Windows shutting down or restarting to protect against data loss; it is a symptom, not a diagnosis.

Capture the useful evidence

  • Photograph or transcribe the complete stop code and any “What failed” filename.
  • Note whether the event occurs during startup, when a game launches, after sleep, or under sustained load.
  • Check Settings > System > About for the Windows edition and build, and record the computer model.
  • Review Event Viewer > Windows Logs > System around the time of the restart. Look for hardware, driver, storage or power events without assuming that the first red icon is the root cause.
  • Preserve any small memory dump or the full memory.dmp file before cleanup tools remove it. Microsoft describes advanced dump analysis as difficult; a manufacturer or qualified technician can use the file with the timeline and stop code.

Apply fixes in a controlled order

  1. Disconnect recent hardware and test the original configuration.
  2. Boot Safe Mode and remove or roll back the driver most closely tied to the timeline.
  3. Install current Windows, vendor drivers, BIOS and firmware.
  4. Run memory and storage diagnostics.
  5. Check temperatures and run the manufacturer’s hardware tests.
  6. If crashes continue, stop changing multiple variables and escalate with the evidence you collected.

When Windows will not boot

Stuck at the BIOS or logo

Microsoft startup guidance says a machine stuck at the BIOS phase may have a hardware issue. Disconnect every nonessential peripheral and try one cold boot. If the system still cannot pass BIOS, do not repeatedly power-cycle a drive that is clicking, disappearing or reporting errors. A manufacturer diagnostic or service appointment is safer.

Windows starts but cannot reach the desktop

Enter WinRE and use Troubleshoot > Advanced options. Depending on what is available, options can include Startup Repair, Startup Settings for Safe Mode, System Restore, Uninstall Updates and Command Prompt. Choose the least destructive option that matches your timeline, and copy data first where possible.

  • On-the-Go Convenience: With an integrated handle and lightweight design (2.14 lbs), our lap desk is portable for travel or moving around the house, offering flexibility in any space.

Using installation media

If WinRE is unavailable, create Windows installation media on a USB flash drive from another working computer and boot the affected PC from it. Select Repair your computer rather than starting a clean installation when your goal is recovery. A reset or reinstall can erase files, applications and settings, so use it only after backups or when data recovery is no longer possible.

Run model-specific manufacturer diagnostics

Manufacturer diagnostics are usually the preferred first hardware test because they understand the model and return codes that support staff can interpret.

Dell systems

  1. Restart the computer.
  2. At the Dell logo, press F12.
  3. Choose Diagnostics and follow the prompts.
  4. Record every error code and validation code if a test fails.
  5. Provide those codes, the model and serial number, and your timeline to Dell Technical Support or a repair professional.

Lenovo systems

Use Lenovo’s support scans for the exact model. Its tools can check common software, hardware and driver issues. Save the scan result and any reference number instead of relying on a verbal description.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Other manufacturers

Look for a pre-boot diagnostics key or support utility in the model’s service documentation. The key, menu wording and available tests vary by vendor and model. Never substitute a generic BIOS update or component driver intended for a different machine.

Choosing self-service, manufacturer support or a repair shop

Option Best when Advantages Risks or limits
Self-service checks The computer boots, data is backed up and you are comfortable following model instructions Immediate testing of recent changes, Safe Mode, memory, storage and temperatures Opening a chassis or flashing firmware can cause damage or affect warranty coverage if done incorrectly
Manufacturer support Vendor diagnostics are available, the device is under warranty, or a model-specific code was produced Uses the correct procedures, parts and diagnostic interpretation Availability, shipping and turnaround vary by region and warranty
Repair shop The machine is unsafe to open, data recovery is urgent, or tests indicate a component failure Specialist tools and component-level experience Cost and replacement-versus-repair value vary; confirm the data-handling policy before handing over the device

Base the decision on data-preservation risk, whether the device can still boot, available vendor diagnostics, warranty status, evidence of a failed component, replacement cost and your comfort opening the chassis. Do not authorize a reset or drive replacement until you understand what happens to your files.

What to give support or a technician

  • Computer model, serial number and Windows edition/build.
  • The exact stop code, BIOS message, beep pattern or vendor diagnostic code.
  • A chronological list of recent updates, hardware changes and symptoms.
  • Memory and storage test names, dates and results.
  • Temperature warnings, unusual sounds and whether the machine fails before or after Windows loads.
  • Relevant dump files, photos and a statement confirming what data has already been backed up.

This evidence prevents a technician from treating the visible game or application as the automatic cause and helps distinguish a repeatable driver problem from an intermittent component failure.

Preventing repeat hardware problems

  • Keep Windows, device drivers, BIOS and firmware current, but change one major variable at a time and note the version.
  • Maintain roughly 10–15% free space on the Windows system drive.
  • Keep vents unobstructed and clean them according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Back up game saves and personal files on a schedule rather than waiting for the first crash.
  • Keep diagnostic codes and replacement receipts with the device’s model and serial number.
  • When a stop code recurs, preserve the dump and timeline before using cleanup or reset features.

For an optional shortcut on driver-related hardware problems, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan more than 100 devices, identify outdated, corrupted or missing drivers, install official drivers, show current and recommended versions, create driver backups and restores, and schedule scans. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; its free trial lasts two days without requiring a credit card, after which a subscription is required. Results vary, and it cannot repair every hardware failure or crash.
