How to Debug a Node.js App That Keeps Crashing on a VPS

Learn how to identify whether repeated Node.js VPS crashes come from application errors, rejected promises, EventEmitters, memory limits, dependency outages, or external kills—and recover without losing evidence.

Stop changing restart settings until you have captured one complete failure. Save the exact stdout and stderr lines, timestamps, exit status, restart count, memory use, deployment revision, Node.js version, environment, working directory, and service-manager or kernel messages around the crash. Then classify the event: an application exception or rejected promise, an unhandled EventEmitter error, an operating-system resource failure, a fatal Node.js runtime error, or a process killed by an external supervisor.

That classification determines the fix. A supervisor such as PM2 can keep a healthy process available and preserve logs, but it cannot repair the code, restore memory, or explain a signal sent by the operating system.

1. Preserve the failure before trying to fix it

A restart is an observation, not a diagnosis. Automatic recovery can erase the only useful evidence, especially when a process exits after a few milliseconds. Treat the next crash as an incident capture exercise.

Record the application context

  • Write down the crash timestamp in UTC and the VPS timezone.
  • Record the deployment revision, dependency lockfile revision, Node.js version, package-manager version, and whether native modules were rebuilt.
  • Capture the exact start command, Unix user, working directory, loaded configuration, and relevant environment-variable names. Do not paste secret values into tickets or shared logs.
  • Note the PM2 restart count, uptime, exit time, reported memory, and whether traffic, a scheduled job, a queue, or a deployment hook preceded the event.
  • Keep the last successful deployment available for a direct comparison.

Preserve all log streams

Save stdout and stderr separately when possible. Include at least several minutes before and after the event, not only the final stack-trace line. A timestamped copy prevents log rotation or a later restart from destroying the evidence.

If the application is behind a reverse proxy, also record the proxy’s upstream errors and health-check results. A proxy showing connection resets while Node shows no exception is a useful clue that the process may have been killed outside JavaScript.

2. Reproduce the production start command in the foreground

Foreground reproduction removes the supervisor from the first diagnostic pass. It also reveals differences between an interactive shell and the account that actually runs the service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Schedule a brief maintenance window or isolate one worker if the application cannot safely be stopped.
  2. Stop only the affected managed process, then switch to the same Unix user used in production.
  3. Change to the production working directory, load the same environment source, and invoke the same Node.js binary and start command. For example, run the deployed entry point from its release directory rather than a developer checkout.
  4. Redirect both streams to a timestamped file while retaining the terminal when practical:
    node server.js > /tmp/myapp-2026-10-15T120000Z.out 2> /tmp/myapp-2026-10-15T120000Z.err
  5. Exercise the smallest request, job, or startup path that previously failed. Stop the test after collecting the first complete error rather than repeatedly hammering a failing dependency.
  6. Record the shell’s exit status immediately after the process ends:
    printf 'exit_code=%sn' "$?"

Use a foreground run only when the same command, user, directory, environment, and binary are reproduced. Running as root from a home directory can hide permission, path, and configuration defects that remain in production.

3. If PM2 is involved, read its evidence before resetting anything

PM2 provides process supervision, automatic restarts, status information, and real-time logs. Its default log files are stored under $HOME/.pm2/logs, with separate output and error streams. A restart loop can therefore be investigated without immediately changing the restart policy.

Useful status and log commands

pm2 ls
pm2 status
pm2 logs myapp --lines 200
pm2 monit

Capture the output of pm2 ls or pm2 status before deleting or recreating the process. The important fields are the process state, restart count, uptime, exit time, process ID, and memory figure. A steadily increasing restart count with very short uptimes usually indicates a deterministic startup failure; a long uptime followed by a single exit points toward traffic, a scheduled task, a leak, or an external event.

Interpret an apparently empty PM2 error log

An empty application error file does not prove a clean exit. The kernel, service manager, container limit, deployment script, or an administrator may have sent a signal before Node could write anything. Correlate the exact exit timestamp with system logs and PM2’s own output stream. Do not clear logs, reset the process, or run a new deployment until that correlation is saved.

Keep logs from hiding a long-running problem

PM2 supports separate output and error files and can use log rotation through its pm2-logrotate module. Rotation prevents a full disk from becoming the next outage, but configure retention only after copying the files needed for the current incident.

4. Check the VPS, service manager, and kernel

Node.js can exit because the operating system refuses an allocation, terminates the process, or prevents it from opening a resource. These failures may leave no JavaScript stack trace.

Look for an out-of-memory kill

Search the kernel and service-manager records around the recorded timestamp for phrases such as an out-of-memory decision, a killed process, a cgroup memory limit, or a swap exhaustion event. Compare the process’s peak memory with total RAM and available swap. A VPS can kill Node even when the application log ends normally.

Look for signals and resource limits

Correlate the exit with deployment hooks, health checks, scheduled restarts, administrator actions, and service-manager stop operations. Check file-descriptor limits, process limits, disk capacity, and inode capacity. A full filesystem can prevent log writes, temporary files, database sockets, or module loading, making the visible symptom look unrelated.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check permission and port failures

Verify that the service account can read the release directory, configuration files, certificates, uploaded assets, and native libraries. Confirm that the configured listen port is free and that the process is binding to the expected address. A port already held by an old release commonly produces a startup failure before the application handles its first request.

5. Classify the crash by its evidence

Node.js groups failures into JavaScript errors, operating-system system errors, assertion errors, and errors deliberately created by an application. The following branches keep the investigation focused.

Uncaught exception

An uncaught synchronous exception normally prints a stack trace to stderr and terminates Node with exit code 1. The stack’s first application frame, not merely the final error message, identifies where invalid input, a missing object, or a failed assumption entered the program.

Fix the throwing code and validate inputs at the boundary that receives them. If the input is an HTTP request, queue message, file, or database row, log a request or job identifier and the validation result without exposing credentials or personal data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Node’s uncaughtException event is emitted when an exception reaches the event loop. Installing a listener does not make the process safe to continue: without an installed listener, the process still crashes, and Node’s documentation treats the event as a last-resort place for synchronous cleanup rather than a recovery mechanism. Use an external monitor for restart and recovery; do not continue serving requests from an undefined process state.

Unhandled promise rejection

An asynchronous operation can fail after the surrounding function has returned. Find the promise that has no rejection path and handle it at the operation boundary. Record the rejection reason together with the request, job, or startup phase that created it.

Do not add a global handler merely to silence warnings. A global observer may be useful for final diagnostics, but each expected failure still needs a deliberate outcome: return an error response, retry with limits, mark a job failed, or terminate a worker that cannot safely proceed.

Unhandled error event

Many Node APIs use EventEmitter. If an emitter emits error without an error listener, Node can throw and terminate the process. Attach a listener to every relevant emitter—servers, streams, child processes, sockets, and queue clients—and decide whether that particular failure should retry, fail one request, discard a job, or stop the worker.

Make the listener specific enough to retain context. A generic listener that logs a message and keeps a corrupted stream alive can convert a visible crash into silent data loss.

System error

Errors such as permission denial, address-in-use, too many open files, missing paths, and unavailable network services originate in the operating system. Their error code and syscall are more useful than a generic “server crashed” message. Correct ownership, paths, limits, ports, certificates, and dependency availability before changing application exception handling.

Fatal runtime or heap failure

A fatal V8 or Node.js runtime event may end the process before ordinary application logging completes. A heap out-of-memory message indicates that the allocation path and concurrency level need investigation, not simply a larger memory setting. Inspect retained objects, unbounded caches, response buffering, queue parallelism, and requests that never release resources.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

External termination

If the final application line is normal and the service manager or kernel records a signal, investigate that signal’s sender and policy. Common causes include a deployment replacing the process, a failed health check, a memory cgroup, a manual stop, or a supervisor’s timeout. Changing JavaScript code will not correct an external kill.

6. Capture a Node.js diagnostic report for hard failures

When ordinary logs stop before the cause appears, enable Node’s diagnostic reports. Reports can be generated for uncaught exceptions, fatal errors such as out-of-memory conditions, and selected signals. They contain structured process and system context that is easier to compare with the application log.

Example launch configuration

NODE_OPTIONS="--report-uncaught-exception --report-on-fatalerror --report-on-signal --report-signal=SIGUSR2 --report-directory=/var/log/myapp" node server.js

Adapt the report directory and permissions to the service account and your VPS’s log policy. Trigger a signal report only when your deployment policy permits it. Preserve the JSON report beside the matching stdout and stderr files, and restrict access: reports can include environment values, command-line details, file paths, and system information.

7. Fix the failure without creating a crash loop

For application exceptions

  • Reproduce the failing input in a non-production environment.
  • Add validation before the operation that currently throws.
  • Return a bounded error to the caller or mark the job failed with enough context to retry safely.
  • Deploy the smallest change, then verify that the original stack frame no longer occurs.

For rejected asynchronous work

  • Attach a rejection path at the boundary that owns the operation.
  • Set explicit timeouts for network and database calls.
  • Choose a finite retry count and preserve the original reason after the final attempt.
  • Ensure shutdown waits for in-flight work or deliberately cancels it instead of leaving promises unresolved.

For EventEmitter failures

  • Attach an error listener immediately after constructing each emitter or stream.
  • Include the emitter’s role and resource identifier in the log.
  • Destroy or replace a broken stream rather than continuing with partial data.

For memory exhaustion

  • Measure resident memory and heap use during normal traffic and at the crash threshold.
  • Find the allocation path, retained references, cache growth, request size, and concurrency spike.
  • Inspect VPS RAM and swap and confirm that no neighboring process is consuming the available capacity.
  • Use a temporary heap limit or controlled process recycling only as containment while the allocation defect is fixed. A larger heap can postpone the crash while increasing swap pressure and extending recovery time.

For dependency outages

Do not let every worker retry an unavailable database or API immediately. Use bounded retries with exponential backoff and jitter, fail requests clearly, and protect the dependency with a circuit or queue policy appropriate to the operation. This prevents a transient outage from becoming a self-inflicted restart storm.

For supervisor or signal termination

Fix the policy that sends the signal: adjust an incorrect health check, deployment timeout, resource limit, or ownership rule. Keep the application code unchanged until the service-manager and kernel evidence shows that the external termination is no longer occurring.

8. Choose the smallest safe supervisor

A single, understandable process model is easier to reproduce than two supervisors fighting over the same process. Compare the existing VPS service model with PM2 before adding another layer.

Concern Foreground or systemd-managed process PM2-managed process
Reproducing the exact command Direct command is explicit; systemd unit fields must be inspected. Use the PM2 process definition and verify its working directory and environment against the foreground command.
Logs Terminal or service-manager journal, depending on configuration. Real-time PM2 logs, with output and error files under the PM2 home by default.
Restart policy Defined by the service unit and its failure policy. Automatic crash restarts, with an exponential-backoff strategy available for repeated failures.
Memory handling Use the service manager or operating-system limits. PM2 supports --max-memory-restart; the threshold must be based on measured normal use.
Boot persistence Native service-manager enablement. Run pm2 startup and pm2 save where appropriate, then verify the generated startup configuration.
Multi-process behavior Usually one process per unit unless you deliberately configure multiple units. PM2 can manage multiple application processes; confirm that shared ports, jobs, and singleton work are safe.
Alerting Requires service-manager or monitoring integration. Restart and status data are visible, but an alert still needs to be configured.

Choose the option that matches the VPS’s existing service-management model and preserves the same environment a manual run uses. Adding PM2 to a systemd unit that already supervises another PM2 daemon can produce misleading restarts and complicated shutdown behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. Configure PM2 for recovery after evidence is safe

Start and inspect a named process

pm2 start app.js --name myapp
pm2 ls
pm2 logs myapp --lines 200

Use the name consistently in deployment scripts and alerts. After a controlled restart, confirm that the working directory, interpreter, environment, and arguments match the foreground reproduction.

Contain a measured memory leak

pm2 start app.js --name myapp --max-memory-restart 200MB

The 200 MB value is an example threshold, not a universal recommendation. Set a limit only after measuring normal memory, burst behavior, and the VPS’s available RAM. Recycling can protect availability while a leak is investigated, but it must not replace the investigation; preserve the pre-recycle evidence and alert when recycling occurs.

Slow repeated restarts

For a dependency that is temporarily unavailable, use PM2’s exponential-backoff restart strategy so each failed attempt waits longer than the previous one. Backoff reduces pressure on the dependency and gives operators time to restore it. It is not appropriate for hiding a deterministic syntax error or a missing configuration file; those should fail fast and page the deployment owner.

10. Verify the deployment after the process stays up

  1. Compare the successful and failing revisions, including the dependency lockfile, native modules, Node.js version, configuration schema, and startup command.
  2. Confirm that the service account owns or can read every required file and that secrets are available through the intended mechanism.
  3. Check that the listen port, reverse-proxy target, health-check path, and timeout agree.
  4. Generate representative traffic and run scheduled jobs at their real concurrency rather than testing only a static home page.
  5. Watch memory, file descriptors, disk and inode capacity, restart count, latency, and dependency error rates through a complete peak period.
  6. Reboot or perform the documented boot test only after verifying persistence. With PM2, check the result of pm2 startup, save the process list with pm2 save, and confirm that the restored environment is identical to the deployed one.
  7. Test log rotation and report-directory permissions so the next incident can write evidence instead of filling the disk.

11. Prevent the next crash loop

  • Alert on an increasing restart count, not only on total process downtime.
  • Keep stdout, stderr, supervisor status, and kernel events searchable by timestamp.
  • Set a retention policy that preserves the first failure while controlling disk use.
  • Make startup validation fail with a clear message for missing configuration, incompatible Node.js versions, unavailable ports, and unreadable files.
  • Use graceful shutdown handling for deployments, but impose a finite shutdown deadline so a stuck process is eventually terminated and recorded.
  • Make jobs idempotent before enabling retries or multiple workers.
  • Document the one command that starts the service, the Unix user, working directory, environment source, and expected health-check response.
  • Review every automatic restart after an incident. A green health check with a hidden memory leak is not a completed fix.

12. A concise incident decision tree

  1. Did Node print a stack trace? Fix the throwing code or input path and retain the exit evidence.
  2. Did a promise or EventEmitter report an unhandled failure? Add handling at the owning operation boundary and define its retry or termination behavior.
  3. Did the kernel or service manager report a kill, limit, permission issue, disk problem, or port conflict? Correct that external condition before changing JavaScript.
  4. Did the process die during a heap or fatal-runtime event? Capture a diagnostic report, identify the allocation or concurrency path, and use recycling only as temporary containment.
  5. Did a dependency outage precede repeated restarts? Add bounded exponential backoff and restore the dependency without allowing every worker to retry at once.
  6. Is the cause still unclear? Reproduce with the production command in the foreground, enable diagnostic reports, and correlate all streams by timestamp and process ID.
