A short game can be worth its price if its quality, pacing, and appeal fit what you want—and what it costs. Playtime is useful to consider, but there is no universal hours-per-dollar cutoff that makes a game a good or bad buy.
Start with what you want from the game
Ask what you are paying for: a tightly paced story, distinctive mechanics, atmosphere, challenge, social play, or a repeatable loop. A compact campaign may suit a player with limited gaming time; someone else may prefer a long story or ongoing multiplayer. Reviews and previews can help you judge whether the game delivers the particular qualities you care about.
Game length matters partly in relation to the promise. GameSpot editor Alexa Ray Corriea put it this way: “Game length matters in terms of what you’re promising to deliver, and, of course, price point.” A short, focused experience is not inherently poor value. But if the price and presentation lead you to expect a much larger game, a short runtime may feel disappointing. Unity’s developer-facing pricing guidance for 2025 and beyond likewise treats playtime as one factor among others and cautions against charging a high price for a game that does not engage players.
Estimate the hours you are likely to play
Use a range, not a promise. Your time to credits can vary with skill, difficulty, exploration, and whether you stop after the main path or pursue optional content. Keep the main path separate from challenges, extra modes, or repeat runs so you do not count hours you are unlikely to spend.

If maximizing playtime for your budget is a priority, divide the price by the hours you realistically expect to play. Treat the result as a filter for comparing options, not a score that settles the question. A low price per hour can still mean poor value if you are not enjoying the game; a higher figure may be acceptable if the experience is unusually compelling to you.
Count replay only when you want to replay
Look for the specific feature that might bring you back: branching paths, optional challenges, leaderboards, or multiplayer. Then ask whether you actually enjoy that kind of play. A replay option that you will not use adds no practical value to your purchase.

GameSpot’s 2015 discussion of game length considers replayability alongside price and quality, while Shacknews’ 2019 staff discussion illustrates how differently players weigh those factors. These are editorial perspectives, not a universal formula; use them to clarify your own preferences rather than adopt someone else’s threshold.
Compare the game with similar experiences
Compare its current asking price, format, and included content with games of similar scope and type. A compact narrative game is not automatically in competition with a sprawling open-world game just because the latter offers more hours. Focus on whether the price seems fair for the experience and audience the game is targeting.

There is no established, universally accepted number of hours a game must provide to justify its price. Prices and discounts also vary by title, platform, and region, so consider the price you can actually pay rather than relying on a general benchmark.
Use playtime evidence without turning it into a rule
A 2025 paper by Joel Waldfogel, Dmitri Reimers, and Michael Riedl, hosted by the Federal Trade Commission, reports an association between lower playtime per dollar and a greater tendency not to recommend games in its observed Steam review data. Of 59,139 reviews for owned user-game combinations, 7,407—or 12.5 percent—were “not recommended.” The finding makes playtime relevant, but it does not show that short games are bad, establish cause and effect, or predict whether you will enjoy a particular purchase. Choose: buy, wait, or skip
- Buy now if the expected experience matches your priorities and the current price feels fair to you.
- Wait for a discount if you are interested but the present price makes the purchase feel risky.
- Skip it if the core appeal is weak for you or you do not expect to enjoy the time you would spend with it.
These are personal decision options, not thresholds established by research. Kevin VanOrd, GameSpot Reviews Editor, summed up the underlying issue: “‘Value’ is such a personal matter that it defies mathematical formulas.”
