For most Soulslikes, beating the game means completing its main progression and reaching a principal ending or final objective. Optional bosses, quests, collectibles, achievements, and DLC may add substantial goals, but they are not automatically part of the main-game finish. If you mean a particular ending or a full completion run, name that standard.
What does “beating” a Soulslike usually mean?
There is no genre-wide rule that every Soulslike uses to define completion. A practical, clear threshold is to finish the main route and reach the game’s principal ending or final objective. If a game has credits, reaching them after the final boss is a common way players describe beating it; that is informal usage, not a binding definition.
Some games do not use conventional credits or a single final boss. In those cases, describe the game’s own endpoint and the threshold you reached rather than forcing another game’s structure onto it.
Which completion goal do you mean?
These goals overlap, but they are not interchangeable. Saying exactly which one you achieved avoids making “beat,” “finish,” and “100%” sound like the same claim.

Why optional content can still matter
Optional does not mean unimportant. Side content can provide bosses, rewards, lore, exploration, or access to a particular ending. The distinction is whether that content is required for the goal you are claiming—not whether it is substantial or worth doing.
Elden Ring: main goal versus exploration
Bandai Namco’s official gameplay overview describes becoming Elden Lord as the overarching goal while also highlighting broad exploration, mini-dungeons with bosses and rewards, and NPC questlines. It notes that NPC questlines can advance as the player progresses. This illustrates how optional activities can be extensive or missable without becoming universal prerequisites for completing the main route.

A quest tied to a particular ending
For a chosen ending, the answer can change. PC Gamer’s Fia questline walkthrough connects that questline to obtaining Elden Ring’s Age of Duskborn ending. A player pursuing that ending needs to meet its associated requirements; a player claiming only to have beaten the main game need not claim to have completed every side quest.
Are all achievements the same as 100% completion?
No. Achievements and trophies are a game- and platform-defined target, while “100%” often refers to a broader checklist selected by a guide or player. In its account of Elden Ring, the Steam Community achievement guide says every spell and weapon is not required for all achievements, though selected legendary items and achievements for different endings are. That is a claim about Elden Ring’s achievement requirements, not a rule for other Soulslikes.

By contrast, the Tarnished Forge Elden Ring tracker defines its own 100% scope through categories such as bosses, equipment, spells, NPC questlines, and achievements. A checklist’s breadth reflects its author’s convention. When using “100%,” identify the checklist or list the categories you completed.
Does beating the base game include its DLC?
Not automatically. State whether you mean the base game or the base game plus an expansion. Bandai Namco’s official Elden Ring page describes Shadow of the Erdtree as adding weapons, equipment, skills and magic, enemies, boss encounters, and plotlines. Those additions create separate expansion goals; finishing the base game does not by itself mean finishing the expansion.

How should you describe your progress?
- For the main route, say you beat the main game or reached its principal ending.
- For one ending, name it and mention that you completed the steps it required.
- For achievements or trophies, say you earned all achievements or trophies rather than calling that “everything” unless your intended scope is clear.
- For a broader run, name the checklist or specify the optional bosses, quests, collectibles, or other categories you completed.
- For DLC, name the expansion and distinguish its completion from the base game.
Players use the terms differently: in an anecdotal discussion on r/soulslikes, one participant distinguishes beating a game by killing the last boss and seeing credits from finishing it according to a personal goal, such as defeating all bosses or reaching 100%. That is one player’s phrasing, not a poll or a universal consensus.
