To permanently delete an Xbox account, you must close the Microsoft account connected to it. Xbox does not offer a separate account-deletion option for an Xbox profile. Closing that Microsoft account removes access to its Xbox profile, gamertag, achievements, purchases, subscriptions, and other Microsoft services tied to the same sign-in.
If you only want to remove your profile from an Xbox console, use the console’s Remove accounts option instead. That signs the account out of the device but does not delete it.

How to permanently delete your Xbox account
- Open Microsoft’s Close your account page.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account used for Xbox.
- Complete any identity or security verification Microsoft requests.
- Check that the displayed account is the one you intend to close, then select Next.
- Read the warnings and select every required confirmation checkbox.
- Choose a reason under Select a reason.
- Select Mark account for closure.
The account is not deleted immediately. Microsoft presents a closure period of either 30 or 60 days, depending on the option available in the closure flow. If you sign in during that period and verify the account, Microsoft reopens it. After the closure period ends, the account is permanently deleted and cannot be recovered.
Use Microsoft’s closure page for the current confirmation steps because the available closure-period option and prompts can change by region or account.

What closing the account deletes
An Xbox account is part of a Microsoft account rather than a separately deletable Xbox-only account. Closing the Microsoft account can remove access to:
- Your Xbox profile and gamertag
- Achievements and other Xbox account data
- Digital games, add-ons, and other purchases associated with the account
- Xbox subscriptions and related services
- Outlook.com email and contacts
- OneDrive files and stored data
- Microsoft 365, Skype, Windows services, and other Microsoft data tied to the sign-in
Before selecting Mark account for closure, review Microsoft’s warnings carefully. Deal with subscriptions, outstanding balances, stored files, and any purchased content you still need. Closing the account does not preserve a transferable Xbox library or let you keep the same Microsoft account while deleting only its Xbox identity.

Remove an Xbox account from a console without deleting it
If you are selling an Xbox, sharing a console, or simply want to stop using Xbox while keeping your Microsoft account, remove the profile locally instead:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Press the Xbox button.
- Open Profile & system.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Account.
- Select Remove accounts.
- Choose the account and select Remove.
On Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, this removes the sign-in profile from that console only. It does not close the Microsoft account, delete the Xbox profile, erase cloud data, or cancel subscriptions.

Does resetting the Xbox delete the account?
No. A console reset is not an account-deletion method. The console reset path is Settings → System → Console info → Reset console. Depending on the reset option you select, it removes local profiles, games, apps, and console data, but it does not close the Microsoft account or permanently delete its Xbox data.
For a console you are giving away, remove your account and choose the appropriate reset option. For permanent account closure, use Microsoft’s web-based account-closure process.

Can you delete only the Xbox profile?
Generally, no. Microsoft does not provide a general consumer workflow for detaching and deleting only the Xbox portion while keeping the same Microsoft account, purchases, and other services. Your practical choices are:
- Keep the account: remove it from the console and cancel subscriptions separately if necessary.
- Close the account: use Microsoft’s account-closure flow and lose access to the Microsoft services and data connected to it.
Child accounts
A child Microsoft account generally cannot be independently removed from the family structure by the child. A parent or family organizer must manage it through Microsoft Family settings.
Best Value
- XBOX GIFT CARD: Buy full digital game downloads, game add-ons, in-game currency, memberships, devices, apps, movies, TV shows, and more.
- DIGITAL GAMES: Choose from hundreds of games, from AAA to indie options. Start playing the moment your most anticipated game is available when you pre-order and pre-download it.
- GAME AD-ONS: Extend the experience of your favorite games with add-ons and in-game currency.
- MOVIES & TV SHOWS: Rent or buy new and popular movies and TV shows from a massive library.
- PERFECT GIFT: Great as a gift for a friend or yourself. Xbox Gift Cards are easy to use, never expire, and give the freedom to pick the gift they want. Enjoy more ways to play without a credit card attached to your Microsoft account.
Removing a child from a family group and closing the child’s Microsoft account are separate actions. The parent or organizer should confirm which outcome is needed before changing the family settings or starting account closure.
Is there a command to delete an Xbox account?
No. There is no command-line command for deleting an Xbox or Microsoft account. Permanent closure is completed through Microsoft’s web account-closure page; removing a profile from an Xbox is completed through the console’s Settings interface.
