The safest way to delete a game on a Windows PC is to use the uninstaller for the place that installed it. Use Settings > Apps > Installed apps for a general Windows installation, or use the game’s uninstall command in Steam, Epic Games Launcher, or the EA app. Back up local saves and other personal files first.
The safest way to delete a game on a Windows PC is to use the uninstaller for the place that installed it. For a normal Windows installation, open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find the game, open its More menu, and select Uninstall. If the game came from Steam, Epic Games Launcher, or the EA app, use that launcher’s uninstall command instead.

Before removing anything, back up saves, screenshots, mods, and configuration files that you may want later. Uninstalling a game does not follow one universal rule for personal data: some saves are stored in the cloud, while others remain in Documents, AppData, or a game-specific folder.
Before you uninstall: identify the installation and protect your files
First determine where the game came from:
- Steam: remove the individual game from Steam, not Steam itself.
- Epic Games Launcher: uninstall it from the Epic library.
- EA app: uninstall it from the game’s Manage menu.
- Microsoft Store or Xbox app: try Windows’ Installed apps list or the app’s own management controls.
- Disc, standalone installer, or another launcher: use Windows Settings or Control Panel.
Back up saves and other important data
Save files may be stored separately from the main game installation. Steam’s documentation notes that third-party game saves may be found in a location such as C:Users<Windows user name>DocumentsMy Games, but the exact location is chosen by each game’s developer. Other common locations include a game’s folder, Documents, and parts of AppData.

If you might reinstall the game, copy or back up:
- local save files;
- mods and mod profiles;
- screenshots and recordings;
- custom configuration files and key bindings; and
- anything stored in a game-specific folder outside the installation directory.
Do not assume that cloud saves are enabled or complete. Their behavior depends on the game, publisher, launcher, account, and settings. If the data matters, make a separate backup before uninstalling.
How to delete a game through Windows Settings
Use this method for games installed through a standalone installer, Microsoft Store, or a launcher whose own uninstall option is unavailable.
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Open Apps, then select Installed apps. On some Windows versions, this may be labeled Apps & features.
- Search for the game or scroll through the list.
- Select the game’s More menu, usually shown as three dots.
- Choose Uninstall and confirm.
- Follow any additional prompts from the game’s uninstaller.
Windows may ask for administrator permission. If the game is still listed after the process finishes, restart Windows or reopen the launcher before checking again.

How to uninstall a game from Control Panel
Control Panel is a useful fallback when the game does not appear in Settings or the Settings uninstall process fails.
- Open Control Panel from the Start menu.
- Select Programs, then Programs and Features.
- Find and select the game.
- Choose Uninstall or right-click the game and select Uninstall.
- Complete the uninstaller’s prompts.
Control Panel may show older desktop programs that do not appear in Windows’ newer Installed apps interface. If neither location lists the game, check the launcher that installed it or look for an uninstaller in the game’s own folder. Do not delete random program folders simply because the title is missing from the list.

How to delete a Steam game without removing Steam
Important: Do not uninstall Steam itself when you only want to remove one game. Steam’s uninstall process can remove Steam and installed game content.
To remove one game while keeping Steam installed:
- Open Steam.
- Open the Library tab.
- Right-click the game, or select its gear icon on the game page.
- Choose Manage, then Uninstall.
- Confirm the removal.
This removes the game’s installed files from the selected Steam library. It may not remove every save, screenshot, mod, or configuration file stored elsewhere, so check your backups and title-specific folders separately if you need to reclaim every possible byte.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf you are removing Steam itself
Uninstalling Steam is a different operation from uninstalling a Steam game. If you plan to reinstall Steam and want to preserve existing game installations, Steam’s support guidance recommends moving the steamapps folder outside the Steam directory before removing Steam. That folder contains installed game content, but saves and other personal data may be stored elsewhere.
If you are unsure whether you need to remove Steam, leave Steam installed and uninstall only the game from the Library.
How to uninstall an Epic Games Launcher game
- Open Epic Games Launcher.
- Select Library.
- Find the game you want to remove.
- Select the three dots next to the game’s title.
- Choose Uninstall and confirm.
Using Epic’s own command lets the launcher update its library status and identify the installation it manages. Back up local saves and mods separately before confirming the removal.

How to uninstall an EA app game
- Open the EA app.
- Select the game in your library.
- Choose Manage.
- Select Uninstall and confirm.
If the EA app’s uninstall command fails on Windows, EA documents Control Panel > Programs and Features as the fallback. Select the game there and run its uninstaller.
What about games from other launchers?
Menu names vary between launchers and can change after an update. Look for the game library’s Manage, Settings, or three-dot menu, followed by Uninstall, Remove, or an equivalent command. If the launcher does not offer one, use Settings > Apps > Installed apps or Control Panel.
For Microsoft Store and Xbox-related installations, Windows may manage the title through the Installed apps list. If it is not listed there, open the Microsoft or Xbox software that installed it and check its game-management options. Avoid assuming that a folder name alone proves which files are safe to remove.
Do not start by deleting the game folder manually
Opening the installation directory and deleting everything by hand can leave the launcher showing the game as installed, preserve shortcuts and services, or remove files shared with another title. It can also leave saves, mods, caches, and settings behind, so it is not a reliable general uninstall method.
Use manual cleanup only after the normal uninstaller has completed and only when you can identify the remaining files as belonging to that game. Never delete broad folders such as Documents, AppData, the entire Steam directory, or a whole launcher folder without a specific, verified reason.

How to find leftovers after uninstalling
If the game still appears to consume space, first reopen the launcher or restart Windows. Then check the following carefully:
- the original game-installation folder;
- title-specific save and configuration folders;
- mod folders and mod-manager downloads;
- screenshots, recordings, and captured clips;
- shader caches or temporary files clearly associated with the title; and
- additional library locations on other drives.
Check folder names and contents before deleting anything. A leftover folder can contain data shared by multiple games, and a large folder is not automatically safe to remove.
Optional third-party cleanup
Windows and the launcher’s own uninstaller are normally all you need to delete a game. If a completed uninstall leaves clearly identified software remnants or temporary files, an optional utility such as Outbyte PC Repair describes tools for cleaning temporary or cached files and an uninstaller for finding software remnants. Treat this as an additional cleanup option, not a requirement for uninstalling a game, and review what it proposes to remove before approving changes. Availability and current program terms should be checked before use.

Uninstalling is not the only solution to a full drive. Steam supports multiple library locations and moving installed game content between drives. If you have another suitable drive, moving a Steam library can free space on the crowded drive while keeping the game available.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use Steam’s library-storage or game-move controls rather than dragging folders manually. The exact menu may vary with Steam updates, but the principle is the same: add or select another library location, then move the game’s installed files through Steam’s management interface.
For games managed by other launchers, look for an official Move, Change install location, or similar option. If no such control exists, uninstalling and reinstalling to another drive is generally safer than manually relocating the folder.

How to verify that the game was removed
- Confirm that the uninstaller completed without an error.
- Reopen the launcher or restart Windows.
- Check whether the game is still marked as installed.
- Check free space on the drive in File Explorer > This PC.
- Inspect only clearly identified, title-specific leftovers.
- Keep your save backup until you are certain you no longer need it.
The amount of recovered space may be less than the game’s advertised download size because saves, screenshots, mods, caches, and shared files are handled separately. Conversely, a launcher may have stored the game in a different library or drive than you expected.
Quick troubleshooting guide
| Problem | What to try |
|---|---|
| The game is missing from Windows Settings | Use the launcher that installed it, then try Control Panel > Programs and Features. |
| The Settings uninstall fails | Try the game’s launcher or Control Panel. Restart Windows if an installer process is still running. |
| The EA app uninstall fails | Use Control Panel > Programs and Features, which EA documents as a Windows fallback. |
| Steam still says the game is installed | Reopen Steam, verify the correct library location, and use Steam’s Library > Manage > Uninstall command. |
| You want to remove Steam but keep the games | Move the steamapps folder outside the Steam directory first, if preserving those installations matters. |
| Storage did not increase as expected | Check other Steam libraries and title-specific mods, screenshots, saves, caches, and configuration folders. Do not delete broad folders. |
| You want space but may play the game again | Move the game to another supported library or drive instead of uninstalling it. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Does uninstalling a PC game delete my save files?
No. A game’s save files may be stored in the cloud, Documents, AppData, or another title-specific location. Back them up before uninstalling unless you are certain you no longer need them.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

No. To remove one Steam game, open Steam’s Library, open the game’s Manage menu, and select Uninstall. Uninstalling Steam itself is a separate process that can remove installed game content.
What if a game does not appear in Windows Installed apps?
Try the launcher that installed the game first, then use Control Panel > Programs and Features. A program can be absent from Windows Settings while still having a usable traditional uninstaller.
Why is the game still using storage after I uninstall it?
Not necessarily. Mods, screenshots, saves, caches, configuration files, and files in another library may remain. Check only folders that are clearly associated with the game; never delete broad Documents, AppData, Steam, or launcher folders without verification.
The Bottom Line
Use the installer’s own uninstall command whenever possible: Steam, Epic Games Launcher, and the EA app can remove their games cleanly and keep their libraries accurate. For other Windows games, use Settings > Apps > Installed apps, with Control Panel as the fallback. Back up local saves first, and investigate leftovers only when you can identify them safely.
