Before requesting deletion, save anything you want to keep and check whether Facebook Login, Messenger or a Facebook-linked Meta Quest account depends on that account.
Deactivation or deletion: which should you choose?

These effects are described in Meta’s Facebook Help Centre guidance on permanently deleting an account. Check the services you use before deciding: losing Facebook Login may require you to contact an app or service provider to regain access to an account.
How to deactivate or delete your Facebook account
Meta lists the following route through Accounts Center. Menu labels or route availability can vary, so use the alternative route below if you do not see the option.
- On Facebook, select your profile picture.
- Choose Settings and privacy, then Settings.
- Open Accounts Center.
- Choose Personal details, then Account ownership and control.
- Select Deactivation or deletion.
- Select the relevant account or profile, choose Deactivate account or Delete account, and follow the confirmation steps.
If you cannot delete the account through Accounts Center, Meta also lists this route: Settings and privacy → Settings → Your Facebook information → Deactivation and deletion → Delete account. Follow the prompts to confirm.

Before you request deletion
Download information you want to keep
Meta recommends downloading a copy of your Facebook information, including photos and posts, before deleting the account. If you use Facebook to sign in to Meta Quest, Meta also recommends downloading a copy of your Quest information. Do this before confirming deletion; Meta says content cannot be retrieved after deletion completes.
Check Facebook Login and connected accounts
Make a list of apps or services where you use Facebook Login. Deletion removes that login access for apps registered with the account. Meta says you may need to contact those services to recover the accounts, so arrange another sign-in method where the service allows it before you delete Facebook.

Consider Messenger and Meta Quest
If you want to keep using Messenger, deactivation may suit you better: Meta says Messenger can remain available if you choose to keep it active. If your Facebook account is linked to Meta Quest, review and download Quest information first. Deleting the Facebook account can remove Quest information, app purchases and achievements; deactivation makes Quest access unavailable while the account remains deactivated.

- Canceling a request: Meta says you can cancel by logging in within up to 30 days. The number of cancellation days varies by region.
- Removing posted content: Meta says it can take up to 90 days from the start of the deletion process to remove all posted content. The material being deleted is not accessible to other Facebook users during this process.
- Backup copies and exceptions: Meta says copies may remain after those 90 days in backup storage used to recover from a disaster, software error or other data loss. It also says it may retain information for legal issues, terms violations or harm-prevention efforts.
These are Meta’s stated operational windows, not guarantees that every copy is erased from every system on the same schedule. Meta’s help page says: “Copies of your information may remain after the 90 days in backup storage that we use to recover in the event of a disaster, software error or other data loss event.”
