New Outlook for Windows is a Microsoft Store app that you remove from Windows Settings and install again from the Store. Classic Outlook is usually part of Microsoft 365 or Office, although Microsoft also provides a standalone installer. Before removing classic Outlook, locate and copy any Outlook Data Files (.pst), because POP and IMAP accounts can store their messages locally.
Use the manual sequence below: identify the edition, preserve local data, repair a damaged data file when appropriate, uninstall only the software you intend to remove, then reinstall and verify every account and personal setting.

Identify which Outlook you are using
Open Outlook and check its name and interface before uninstalling anything. Microsoft has two Windows applications with different removal and installation paths.
| Edition | How it is usually installed | Local PST support | What removal normally means |
|---|---|---|---|
| New Outlook for Windows | Microsoft Store app; it may appear in Windows as Outlook or Outlook for Windows | Microsoft says PST access requires classic Outlook to also be installed, with both applications using matching 32-bit or 64-bit architecture. New Outlook on ARM does not support PST files. | Remove the individual Windows app, then reinstall it from Microsoft Store. |
| Classic Outlook | Microsoft 365 or Office desktop installation, or Microsoft’s standalone publisher download; Microsoft also lists the Store as an option | Fully supports Outlook Data Files used by POP and IMAP accounts. | Repair or reinstall Outlook/Office without removing the whole suite unless that is your intention. |
Starting in 2024, Microsoft says many new Windows devices arrive with new Outlook preinstalled and do not include classic Outlook. Do not assume that uninstalling one edition will restore the other. Microsoft also states that the account used in new Outlook must have a Microsoft 365 subscription; availability can vary by account, Windows edition and region.

Quick visual clues
- If the app is labeled Outlook for Windows and came from Microsoft Store, treat it as new Outlook.
- If you see the traditional ribbon with File, Home, Send/Receive and View tabs, you are probably using classic Outlook.
- If Outlook appears under a Microsoft 365 or Office installation in Windows Settings, it is normally classic Outlook.
Protect mail and settings before deleting classic Outlook
Uninstalling an application is different from deleting the files it created, but local Outlook data still needs a deliberate backup. Microsoft states that when you use a POP or IMAP account, all Outlook information is stored in an Outlook data file, also called a Personal Storage Table (.pst). That file can contain downloaded mail, contacts, calendar items and archives that are not safely recreated by simply adding the account again.
Find every data file
- Open classic Outlook.
- Select File > Account Settings > Account Settings.
- Open the Data Files tab and record the full path for every .pst and .ost file.
- Close Outlook completely. Check Task Manager if Outlook.exe remains open.
- Copy each .pst file to an external drive or another protected folder. Keep the original until you have opened the copy successfully after reinstalling.
Do not treat an .ost file like a PST archive. An OST is a synchronized cache for accounts such as Exchange. Microsoft says an Exchange OST can be deleted and Outlook will recreate it the next time Outlook opens. Preserve a PST before uninstalling; delete an OST only when you are intentionally rebuilding a damaged Exchange cache and the mailbox has synchronized copies on the server.
Record settings that may not return automatically
Before removal, note each account address and account type, then capture the names and locations of local archives. If you use rules, signatures, custom views or add-ins, document them or export them using the commands available in your Outlook build. Cloud mailbox content normally comes back after you sign in, but local archives and profile customizations require separate verification.

Delete and reinstall new Outlook for Windows
Use this procedure only after confirming that the app is the new Store-based Outlook. Removing it does not convert the installation into classic Outlook.
1. Uninstall the app from Windows Settings
- Open Settings from the Start menu.
- Choose Apps > Installed apps. On some Windows builds this page is called Apps & features.
- Search for Outlook or Outlook for Windows.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the matching app and choose Uninstall.
- Accept the confirmation. If Windows asks you to restart, restart before installing again.
If no Outlook entry appears, you may be using classic Outlook, an Office-managed installation, or a work-managed device that blocks app removal. Do not delete random Outlook folders from the disk; identify the installation source first.
2. Install it again from Microsoft Store
- Open Microsoft Store from Start.
- Search for Outlook for Windows and select the Microsoft-published app.
- Choose Get or Install. Let Store finish downloading before launching Outlook.
- Open Outlook, sign in with the account you used previously, and complete any account or privacy prompts.
- Allow synchronization to finish. Check the newest and oldest messages, calendar, contacts and any connected accounts before deciding that the reinstall succeeded.
If Store reports that the app is unavailable, update Windows and Microsoft Store, then check whether your organization controls Store installations. A personal account, a work account and a Microsoft 365 subscription can expose different availability; use the account and edition supported by your device rather than installing an unrelated package.

Delete and reinstall classic Outlook
Classic Outlook is commonly delivered with Microsoft 365 or Office. The safest approach is to repair that installation first, or reinstall Outlook from Microsoft’s official standalone publisher download when you do not want to remove the entire Office suite.

Option A: repair Office before uninstalling it
- Close Outlook and other Office applications.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft 365, Microsoft Office or the Office entry that owns Outlook, open its three-dot menu and choose Modify or Change.
- Run Quick Repair first. If the problem remains, repeat the process with Online Repair, following the prompts for your edition.
- Restart Windows, then test Outlook before removing the suite.
Repair is preferable when the application files are damaged but your profile and local data are intact. The exact labels can differ between Windows and Office builds.
Option B: reinstall classic Outlook with the standalone installer
- Open Microsoft’s US Microsoft Support page for the standalone classic Outlook publisher download. Select the download that matches your license and Windows edition.
- Run the downloaded installer and accept the prompts. Keep Outlook closed while installation is in progress.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Launch classic Outlook, sign in or enter the account details requested by your license, and wait for the initial profile setup to finish.
Microsoft also lists Microsoft Store as an installation option for classic Outlook in some circumstances. The available package depends on your region, license and device, so use the edition Microsoft offers for your account instead of assuming that every Store listing is classic Outlook.

Option C: remove the whole Microsoft 365 or Office installation
Choose this only when you intend to remove Word, Excel and the other Office applications as well as Outlook. Use Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the Microsoft 365 or Office entry, choose Uninstall, and follow the prompts. Confirm that your PST backups are complete first. Afterward, reinstall the complete suite from the Microsoft account or installer associated with your license, then open Outlook and rebuild the profile.
Repair a damaged PST or OST before a full reinstall
A reinstall replaces program files; it does not necessarily repair a corrupt Outlook data file. If Outlook crashes while opening one profile, reports that a data file cannot be opened, or repeatedly stops during synchronization, try Microsoft’s PST/OST repair workflow first.
For a PST
- Close Outlook and make a backup copy of the affected PST.
- Use Microsoft’s Inbox Repair Tool procedure for your Office version. The procedure asks you to select the PST, scan it and, if errors are found, create a repair backup before applying the repair.
- Open Outlook and test the repaired file. If it opens, inspect folders and recent messages against your backup.
- If repair cannot complete, create a new Outlook profile and attach the backed-up PST rather than repeatedly overwriting the only copy.
The repair tool can correct structural errors, but it cannot recreate information that was never saved in the file. Keep the untouched backup while you verify the results.
Best Value
- Alternative office suite: Word processor TextMaker, Spreadsheet program PlanMaker, Presentation software Presentations, Automation tool BasicMaker
- Licensed for 5 users / household or 1 user / organization, perpetual lifetime license for Windows, Mac and Linux
- User interface with modern ribbons or classical menus
- Compatible with all modern Microsoft Office documents including DOCX, XLSX, PPTX
- The complete office suite can be installed on a USB flash and used without installation
For an Exchange OST
- Confirm that the account is Exchange-based and that recent mail and calendar items are present in the mailbox on the server or in webmail.
- Close Outlook.
- Use the OST location you recorded under File > Account Settings > Data Files, then remove the OST file.
- Open Outlook. Microsoft says Outlook will create a new OST during the next launch and synchronize the mailbox again.
Never apply this Exchange-cache procedure to a PST containing local-only mail or archives.

Add accounts in a controlled order
- Open Outlook and add your primary account first.
- Wait for its folders and recent messages to synchronize before adding additional accounts.
- Add POP or IMAP accounts using the provider’s current server settings. If an account previously used a PST, do not create a new empty archive and assume the old messages have vanished.
- For classic Outlook, choose File > Open & Export > Open Outlook Data File, browse to the preserved PST copy and open it.
New Outlook’s PST access has two prerequisites identified by Microsoft: classic Outlook must also be installed, and both applications must use the same 32-bit or 64-bit architecture. An ARM build of new Outlook does not support PST files. If either requirement is missing, use classic Outlook to access the archive or install matching desktop components.
Check the information that matters
- Send a test message and confirm that replies arrive.
- Open several old and new mail folders, including any local archive folders.
- Check calendar appointments, contacts and shared mailboxes.
- Confirm that rules run as expected and that signatures appear when composing.
- Re-enable only the add-ins you trust, one at a time, and test Outlook after each change.
- Verify that the account is using the intended default data file and that new messages are delivered to the correct inbox.
When reinstalling does not solve the problem
| Symptom | Likely explanation | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Outlook is missing from Installed apps | You are looking at the wrong edition, or Office is managed by an organization. | Check whether Outlook is inside Microsoft 365/Office and ask the administrator before removing managed software. |
| Mail returns but local folders are empty | The profile was recreated without opening the original PST. | Use the preserved PST copy in classic Outlook through File > Open & Export > Open Outlook Data File. |
| New Outlook cannot open a PST | Classic Outlook is absent, the architectures do not match, or the device uses ARM new Outlook. | Install matching classic Outlook and architecture, or use classic Outlook for the PST. |
| Outlook crashes immediately after reinstall | A damaged profile, data file, add-in or Office installation may remain. | Run the PST/OST repair workflow, create a fresh profile, disable add-ins, and repair Office before repeating an uninstall. |
| Exchange mail stops updating | The OST cache may be corrupt or synchronization is blocked. | Confirm the mailbox works in webmail, then rebuild the OST as described above. |
| The Store will not install new Outlook | Windows, Store, account, region or organizational policy may limit availability. | Update Windows and Store, verify the signed-in account, and check with the device administrator. |
Final decision: repair, remove, or reinstall?
Repair first when Outlook opens far enough to identify a damaged file or Office installation. Preserve PST files before any classic Outlook removal. Reinstall new Outlook only through Windows app settings and Microsoft Store. Reinstall classic Outlook through the Microsoft 365/Office installer or Microsoft’s standalone publisher download, and remove the complete Office suite only when you want every Office application gone. After installation, the job is not finished until accounts, local archives, mail, calendar, contacts, rules and signatures have all been checked.
