To delete a Skype message for everyone, remove an individual message that you sent from inside the chat. To hide an entire chat from your own Skype account, delete a one-to-one conversation or clear a group conversation; those actions remove only your copy. If the messages may be needed later, export Conversations and Files before deleting anything.
Choose the deletion action that matches your goal
Skype has separate controls for a single sent message, a one-to-one conversation, a group conversation, leaving a group, and deleting data across your Microsoft account. The controls look similar but have very different effects on other participants and on your ability to recover a record.

The key distinction is visibility. Remove is the documented Skype action that removes a sent instant message for everyone in that chat. Conversation deletion, group clearing and leaving are local actions that do not erase other people’s copies.

Use this when one message you sent is incorrect, private, accidental or otherwise no longer appropriate. Microsoft states: “If you remove an instant message that you sent, it’s removed for everyone in a chat, and nobody will see it in that chat.” The control applies to your own sent message, not to messages written by someone else.

On a phone or tablet
- Open Skype and open the chat containing the message.
- Find the message that you sent.
- Tap and hold the message until its action menu appears.
- Choose Remove.
- Confirm the removal when Skype asks.
On Windows, macOS or the desktop client
- Open Skype and select the chat.
- Locate the message you sent.
- Right-click the message.
- Choose Remove.
- Confirm the action.
What this action cannot do
- You cannot remove a message sent by another participant.
- System messages cannot be deleted.
- Removing one message does not delete the rest of the conversation.
- Removing a message is not the same as deleting the chat from your Chats list.
If your objective is to make one sent message disappear from the conversation for all participants, stop after using Remove. Deleting the whole chat afterward would only affect your own copy and would not provide an additional deletion for other participants.
Delete a one-to-one Skype conversation
Delete a conversation when you want the one-to-one chat removed from your own Skype history and Chats list. This does not delete the other participant’s copy. Microsoft describes the effect this way: “Deleting a conversation deletes your copy of messages in a conversation. It will only be deleted for you and not the other participant.”
On mobile
- Open the Chats tab.
- Find the one-to-one conversation.
- Tap and hold the chat.
- Choose Delete conversation.
- Confirm by choosing Delete.
On desktop
- Open the Chats tab.
- Find the one-to-one conversation you want to remove.
- Right-click the chat.
- Choose Delete conversation.
- Confirm with Delete.
Use this option only when removing your local copy is enough. It does not retract messages from the other person’s account, and it is not a substitute for removing a particular message that you sent.

Clear a Skype group conversation
Group chats use Clear conversation rather than the one-to-one chat’s delete wording. Clearing removes your copy of the group conversation. Every other participant retains their own copy, so the group history remains available to them.
On mobile
- Open Chats.
- Tap and hold the group chat.
- Choose Clear conversation.
- Confirm the clear action.
On desktop
- Open Chats.
- Right-click the group chat.
- Choose Clear conversation.
- Confirm when prompted.
Clearing is appropriate when you want to clean up your own chat list without changing what anyone else can read. It does not remove individual messages for the group. If a specific message you sent must disappear for all participants, open the chat and use Remove on that message instead.

Leave a group conversation
Leaving is different from merely clearing the chat. It clears your copy, removes the conversation from your chat list and takes you out of the group.
- In Chats, find the group conversation.
- On mobile, tap and hold it. On desktop, right-click it.
- Choose Leave conversation.
- Confirm that you want to leave.
If you later rejoin, the history visible to you depends on the chat-history setting and on when you left and rejoined. Leaving therefore should not be treated as a reliable way to preserve or recover the old transcript. Export any record you may need before leaving.
Save Skype messages and files before deletion
Export first if the conversation could be needed for work, a dispute, a project record, family history or any other purpose. Microsoft’s export page lets you request Conversations, Files, or both. The export is a separate preservation step; deleting a chat first can remove the copy you intended to save.
Request an export
- Open Microsoft’s Skype export page while signed in to the Microsoft account used by Skype.
- Choose Conversations, Files, or both, according to what you need to retain.
- Submit the export request.
- Return to the export page later to check whether the archive is available.
- Download the archive when it is ready.
- Store the downloaded files somewhere you control, and verify that the expected conversations or media are present before deleting the online copy.
What the export can contain
An exported conversation record can include Skype and SMS messages, polls, scheduled calls, swift cards and location shares. An exported media request can include files, pictures, videos, video messages, voicemail and call recordings. Select both categories if you need the text history and its attached media.
Practical preservation checks
- Open the downloaded archive rather than assuming that a completed request contains every item you expected.
- Keep the original archive unchanged as a reference copy.
- Make a second copy in a separate location if the record is important.
- Only start deleting chats after you have confirmed that the relevant date range, participants and attachments are present.
The export process is for preserving a record; it does not itself remove the chat from Skype.

Delete Skype activity from your Microsoft account
Microsoft also documents account-level controls. You can clear Skype activity from the Microsoft account Privacy page, or use the export page’s Delete your data option. These controls have a much wider impact than deleting a single conversation.
Clear activity from the Privacy page
Use the Microsoft account Privacy page when you want to manage the Skype activity associated with the account rather than just one item in the Skype client. Review the scope shown for your account before confirming any clearing action.
Use “Delete your data” on the export page
The export page’s Delete your data option is the more consequential choice. Microsoft warns that deleting the available data can remove chats, contacts, calls and files. Export anything you need before selecting it, and do not use it merely to hide one conversation from your Chats list.
Can you delete all Skype chat history at once?
Microsoft’s documented client procedure covers removing individual sent messages and handling conversations one at a time. A Microsoft Community discussion records the practical limitation that Skype does not provide a single bulk conversation-history control. Treat that as community guidance rather than a permanent product guarantee: client features can change, so check the current Skype menus before promising a bulk operation.
If your current client offers no bulk command, the supported choices are to remove sent messages individually, delete one-to-one conversations individually, clear group conversations individually, or use the account-level data controls after exporting. Do not confuse selecting several items in a file manager with deleting Skype’s server-side chat history; the client controls determine what is actually removed.

Which option should you use?
You sent one message that must disappear for everyone
Open the chat and use Remove on that message. This is the only documented choice in this set that removes the sent message for everyone in the chat.
You want a private one-to-one chat off your account
From Chats, choose Delete conversation. Expect the other participant to retain their copy.
You want your copy of a group chat gone
Choose Clear conversation. This cleans your history while leaving the group members’ copies unchanged.
You no longer want to participate in the group
Choose Leave conversation. This also removes the chat from your list, and any later history after rejoining depends on chat-history settings and timing.

Troubleshooting when a deletion option is missing
The menu says “Delete” instead of “Remove”
Check what you selected. Remove appears for a message you sent inside the chat. Delete conversation appears for a one-to-one chat in the Chats list. Clear conversation appears for a group chat. Selecting the chat row instead of the message changes the available commands.
You are trying to remove someone else’s message
Skype does not document a control for removing another participant’s message. Only a message you sent can be removed with the message-level command.
You cannot find the group after clearing it
Clearing removes your copy, so the conversation may no longer appear in the same way in your list. If you need the group again, locate it through the normal Skype chat or contact controls. If you leave rather than clear, you are no longer a member and rejoining can affect which history is visible.

The other person still has the conversation
That is expected after deleting a one-to-one conversation, clearing a group conversation or leaving a group. Those actions remove your copy only. To remove a message for everyone, use Remove on the specific message you sent.
The export is not ready
Submitting an export request is not the same as downloading it immediately. Return to the export page to check availability, then download the archive when Microsoft makes it available. Do not delete the source conversations until you have checked the downloaded record if preservation matters.

- Decide whether the target is one sent message, a one-to-one chat, a group chat, group membership or account-wide data.
- Determine whether other participants must lose visibility. Only Remove on your own sent message has that documented everyone-in-chat effect.
- Request Conversations and, if needed, Files from Microsoft’s export page.
- Wait for the archive, download it and verify the contents.
- Use the mobile tap-and-hold path or desktop right-click path for the selected scope.
- After confirmation, check the chat list and, when relevant, ask the recipient to verify the result of a removed message.
- Avoid the account-level Delete your data control unless you intentionally want its broader effect on chats, contacts, calls and files.
