How to Deploy a Public GitHub Repository With Coolify

Deploy a public GitHub repository with Coolify over HTTPS without a deploy key. Learn which build pack to choose, how to configure ports and domains, set secrets, deploy from the dashboard or CLI, verify logs, and fix unreachable or failed deployments.

Yes. Coolify can deploy a public GitHub repository over HTTPS without a deploy key or a Git source connection. Create an application, choose the build pack that matches the repository, expose the port used inside the container, attach a domain, set environment variables, deploy, and verify the result in the deployment logs. The exact build pack and routing settings determine whether the application is reachable.

What you need before creating the application

Coolify is an open-source, self-hostable platform for deploying and managing applications, databases, and services on servers you control. That means the first requirement is infrastructure you administer: a connected server, a Coolify project, and an environment in which the application will run. Coolify does not remove responsibility for the server’s operating system, network access, DNS, storage, backups, or resource limits.

The dashboard asks for the same core values as the official CLI workflow. Have these ready:

  • A verified Coolify account or CLI context with permission to create and deploy applications.
  • The target project UUID and server UUID if you are using the CLI.
  • A Coolify environment.
  • The public GitHub repository URL and the branch to deploy.
  • The repository’s build method: Nixpacks or Railpack, Static, Dockerfile, or Docker Compose.
  • The port on which the application listens inside its container.
  • A domain name, or access to the server’s configured wildcard or generated-domain feature.

A public repository is readable over HTTPS, so Coolify does not need a GitHub deploy key or a private Git source for the initial checkout. Private repositories and provider webhooks use a different access model; do not apply the public-repository procedure to them.

Choose the correct build pack first

The build pack tells Coolify how to turn the repository into a runnable application. Select it from the repository’s files and deployment architecture, not from the language name alone.

Build pack Use it when Important decision
Nixpacks or Railpack The repository is a conventional language project with a recognizable manifest and a supported source-detection path. You get fast automatic detection, but less direct control than maintaining your own image definition.
Static The build produces files that can be served as a static website. The publish directory and web-serving behavior must match the output produced by the repository’s build command.
Dockerfile The repository contains a Dockerfile and needs explicit operating-system packages, runtime versions, startup commands, or multi-stage image control. You control the image closely, but you also maintain the Dockerfile and its updates.
Docker Compose The repository defines multiple cooperating services in a Compose file. Service topology matters: each public service may need its own port, domain, and log selection.

Coolify normally builds source-based applications on the deployment server. Supported configurations can use a separate build server and registry. If you need to rebuild without Docker’s build cache, Coolify provides a force-deploy option.

Dashboard deployment: step by step

1. Create an application from the public repository

  1. Open the target project and environment in Coolify.
  2. Choose the option to create a new application from a public Git repository.
  3. Enter the repository’s HTTPS URL exactly as it appears on GitHub.
  4. Enter the branch to deploy. Do not assume the default branch is the one that contains the deployable code.
  5. Choose the server on which Coolify should build and run the application.

Because the repository is public, no deploy key needs to be generated or installed. If checkout fails at this stage, confirm that the URL is public, the branch exists, and the server can reach the repository over HTTPS.

2. Select the build pack

Inspect the repository before choosing. A project with a Dockerfile generally belongs on Dockerfile even if automatic source detection could identify its language. A repository whose output is only HTML, CSS, JavaScript, images, or other generated files belongs on Static when its publish directory is known. Choose Docker Compose when several services must start together and communicate over the Compose network. Use Nixpacks or Railpack when the project follows a conventional supported layout and you want Coolify to infer the build and start process.

For source-detected builds, check the detected base directory, install command, build command, and start command after Coolify analyzes the repository. A monorepo may require a base-directory adjustment so that Coolify reads the manifest and build files from the application’s subdirectory rather than from the repository root.

3. Set the exposed container port

Enter the port on which the application process listens inside the container. This is the value required by the public-application CLI’s --ports-exposes option. It is not an arbitrary host port and it is not necessarily the port shown in a local development command.

For example, if the production process binds to port 3000 inside the container, expose 3000 in Coolify. If it binds to 8080, expose 8080 instead. The process must also bind to an interface reachable from the container network, rather than only to a loopback address. The repository’s start command, Dockerfile, or framework configuration is the authoritative place to confirm the listening port.

4. Configure environment variables

Open the application’s Environment Variables area and add the values required by the build or runtime process. Keep credentials, API keys, database passwords, signing keys, and other secrets in Coolify’s secret handling instead of committing them to the repository or placing them in shell history.

Coolify’s CLI supports creating an individual variable or synchronizing a dotenv file. A dotenv file can be useful for repeatable configuration, but treat the file as sensitive if it contains secrets and do not commit it to the public repository.

Distinguish build-time variables from runtime variables. A frontend bundle may embed a value during its build, while a server process reads another value when it starts. Changing a variable that affects the image or container does not change the currently running process until you deploy or restart as appropriate.

5. Add a domain and confirm routing

In the Domains configuration, add the public hostname that should route to the application. The domain must resolve to the server handling the Coolify proxy, and the application must have a matching exposed container port. Coolify can also use a configured wildcard or generated-domain capability where that feature is available on the server.

A domain controls public routing; it does not change the port on which the process listens. Conversely, exposing the correct port does not create DNS records or make a hostname point at the server. Configure both sides: DNS for the hostname and the application’s domain entry in Coolify.

6. Deploy the application

Save the configuration and start a deployment. Coolify checks out the selected branch, builds the source or image according to the chosen build pack, creates or reuses the image, and starts the container or Compose services.

Do not treat a successful configuration save as a deployment. Settings such as environment variables, ports, domains, health checks, networks, storage, and resource limits may require a deploy or restart before the running container uses them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Equivalent CLI workflow

The documented public-repository CLI sequence has three parts: create the application, add or synchronize environment variables if needed, and deploy by application UUID.

  1. Use coolify app create public ... with the required project, server, environment, repository, branch, build-pack, and port arguments. Include --ports-exposes with the internal listening port.
  2. Create a variable with coolify app env create, or synchronize a dotenv file with coolify app env sync when that is the safer repeatable workflow.
  3. Start the deployment with coolify deploy uuid <application-uuid>.

The ellipsis in the first command represents the other required arguments for your project and repository; use the values for your own project UUID, server UUID, environment, repository URL, branch, build pack, and exposed port rather than copying an example identifier. Avoid putting secrets directly in command arguments if your shell history or automation logs are retained.

If your automation needs provider webhooks or automatic deployments on pushes, use Coolify’s documented webhook or GitHub App integration path. A public repository can be built manually without that integration, but push-triggered deployments require an event source and the corresponding access configuration.

How to verify a deployment

Check the deployment record

After starting a deployment, open the deployment records and confirm that the current attempt reaches a completed state. A build log that stops during dependency installation, image creation, or startup identifies a different failure class than a healthy container that cannot be reached over the domain.

Check application status and logs

Inspect the application status and timestamped logs after the container starts. Look for the actual startup message, the bound port, migration errors, missing variables, permission errors, and repeated crash-and-restart cycles. For Docker Compose applications, select the relevant service when reading logs; the overall project can appear active while one public-facing service is failing.

Test the public route

Open the configured domain only after confirming that DNS points to the Coolify server and that the process is listening on the exposed container port. If the application serves a health endpoint, use it as a focused test. A response from the proxy proves that routing exists, but it does not by itself prove that every backend service is healthy.

What changes require a redeploy or restart?

Coolify’s saved configuration and the running container are separate states. Deploy or restart after changing any setting that must be present in the container or proxy:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Environment variables and secrets.
  • Exposed ports and network settings.
  • Domains and routing targets.
  • Health-check paths, intervals, or thresholds.
  • Persistent storage and mounts.
  • CPU, memory, or other resource limits.
  • Build commands, base directories, Dockerfile content, or source revisions.

Build-related changes need a deployment that creates or reuses an image. A restart can apply runtime state without rebuilding source, so choose deploy when the image or repository contents changed and restart when only a running-process refresh is required.

Troubleshoot the common failure modes

The repository will not build

  1. Read the deployment log from the first error rather than only the final failure line.
  2. Confirm that the selected branch contains the expected manifest, Dockerfile, Compose file, or static-output configuration.
  3. Verify the build pack. A static site selected as a source-detected server, or a multi-service repository selected as a single-service build, can fail before startup.
  4. Check the base directory in a monorepo and confirm that build and start commands run from the directory containing the application files.
  5. Confirm that required build-time variables are present and that dependency versions are compatible with the selected runtime.

A failed source build does not automatically replace the currently running version. If the previous image is still running, the public application can remain available while you correct the failed deployment.

The container is healthy, but the URL does not work

  • Verify that the process listens on the same internal port entered in Coolify’s exposed-port setting.
  • Check that the process is not bound only to localhost inside the container.
  • Confirm that the domain entry targets this application rather than another service on the server.
  • Check DNS resolution for the hostname and allow time for a record change to propagate.
  • For Compose, confirm that the domain is assigned to the service that actually serves HTTP or HTTPS.

A healthy container status means the process is running; it does not guarantee that the proxy can reach the expected port or that DNS reaches the correct server.

Configuration changes are not visible

Save the change, then deploy or restart according to whether it affects the image or only runtime state. Environment variables, ports, domains, health checks, networks, storage, and resource limits are not guaranteed to replace the currently running container merely because the form was saved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Secrets appear in logs or shell history

Move the value into Coolify’s environment-variable and secret handling, remove it from repository files, and avoid passing it as a command-line argument in automation. Rotate a credential if it has already been written to a public repository, build log, CI output, or shared shell history.

A Compose deployment is partly unavailable

Inspect logs for the specific service that owns the public endpoint. Check its internal port, dependency readiness, network name, and domain assignment separately from the database, worker, or other supporting services. A running Compose project can contain one failed service while the rest continue operating.

Operational choices to make before going live

Where builds run

Building on the deployment server is the default source-build model and is simplest for a small installation. A dedicated build server and registry can separate compilation and image storage from production workloads when your supported Coolify configuration provides them. Account for the network path between the build system, registry, and runtime server.

How updates are triggered

Manual deployment gives you an explicit approval point for each branch revision. Webhooks or GitHub App integration can trigger deployments from provider events when you need continuous delivery. Whichever method you use, keep the branch, build pack, exposed port, and required variables documented so an event cannot silently deploy the wrong repository path or environment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to recover safely

Keep the last known-good deployment identifiable in Coolify’s deployment records. When a new build fails, investigate its logs before forcing a replacement. A force deploy is useful for eliminating Docker build-cache effects, but it does not fix an incorrect branch, missing variable, invalid command, or wrong port.

A concise pre-launch checklist

  • The repository is public, and the intended branch exists.
  • The application’s build pack matches its files and service topology.
  • The base directory and build/start commands point at the deployable code.
  • The exposed port is the internal listening port used by the process.
  • Required environment variables are present in Coolify, with secrets kept out of Git.
  • DNS points the public domain to the Coolify server, and the domain is assigned to the application.
  • The deployment record completes, the application status is healthy, and logs show the expected service listening.
  • A domain request reaches the intended service after the deployment or restart.
  • Future pushes have an intentional manual, webhook, or GitHub App deployment path.
