The reliable production path on a single VPS is Browser → Nginx → Gunicorn → Django → PostgreSQL. Nginx accepts public HTTP and HTTPS traffic and serves static files, Gunicorn runs Django’s WSGI application through a private Unix socket, and Django uses PostgreSQL for application data. This guide shows how to build that stack on an Ubuntu server, secure it, release updates safely, and verify every layer.
Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
Django’s documentation is explicit: “The runserver command starts a lightweight development server, which is not suitable for production.” Use runserver only for local development; use Gunicorn (or an ASGI server when your application requires asynchronous behavior) behind a real web server in production.

What this deployment architecture does
A VPS deployment puts the operating system, web server, application process and database under your control. The request path is deliberately split into responsibilities:
- Nginx listens on ports 80 and 443, handles TLS, serves collected static files and forwards dynamic requests.
- Gunicorn keeps one or more Django worker processes running and exposes them through a Unix socket that is not reachable directly from the internet.
- Django applies URL routing, middleware, authentication and business logic.
- PostgreSQL stores relational application data and is reached using credentials supplied through protected environment configuration.
This pattern suits a small production site, an internal service, or a single virtual machine operated by a small team. It is not automatically highly available: one VPS, one operating-system instance and usually one database instance remain possible failure points. Applications that depend on long-lived asynchronous connections, WebSockets or other async behavior may need an ASGI server and a different process design instead of the WSGI/Gunicorn path used here.

Plan the server before installing anything
Choose the operating system and access model
Use a currently supported Linux distribution. The commands below assume a Debian-based Ubuntu server with sudo access. Log in initially with the provider’s administrative account, then create a separate deploy user and use that account for application files and releases. Do not run Django, Gunicorn or deployment commands as root unless a specific system operation requires it.
sudo adduser deploy
sudo usermod -aG sudo deploy
sudo install -d -o deploy -g deploy /srv/myproject
sudo install -d -o root -g deploy -m 0750 /etc/myproject
Replace myproject with your project name. Configure SSH keys for deploy, test a second login session, and only then consider disabling password authentication or direct root login in the SSH daemon. Keep an existing administrative session open while changing SSH settings so a syntax error does not lock you out.
Recommended Free Tools
Install system packages
Update package metadata and install Python tooling, compilation support, Git, Nginx, firewall utilities and PostgreSQL. The PostgreSQL server packages are needed only when the database will run on this VPS; keep the client development package when PostgreSQL is hosted elsewhere because Python database drivers may need its headers and libraries.
sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade
sudo apt install python3-venv python3-pip python3-dev build-essential libpq-dev git nginx ufw postgresql postgresql-contrib
If the database is remote, omit postgresql and postgresql-contrib, but retain libpq-dev. Record the server’s private and public addresses, the intended domain name, the application directory, and where persistent media uploads will live. These decisions affect firewall rules, Nginx paths and backup scope.
Set a conservative firewall
Permit SSH before enabling the firewall, then allow web traffic. If your SSH service uses a nonstandard port, replace the profile name with the matching rule.
sudo ufw allow OpenSSH
sudo ufw allow 'Nginx Full'
sudo ufw enable
sudo ufw status verbose
Gunicorn’s Unix socket and PostgreSQL’s local socket do not require public firewall ports. If PostgreSQL is remote, allow its traffic only to the database provider’s address or private network rather than opening port 5432 to the world.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Create PostgreSQL roles and a database
When PostgreSQL runs locally, create a database role with a strong password and a database owned by that role. Use the PostgreSQL administrative account only for this setup; the Django application should connect as its own least-privileged role.
sudo -u postgres psql
CREATE ROLE myproject_user WITH LOGIN PASSWORD 'use-a-long-random-password';
CREATE DATABASE myproject_db OWNER myproject_user;
c myproject_db
GRANT CONNECT ON DATABASE myproject_db TO myproject_user;
q
Do not paste a real password into shell history, source files or tickets. A remote managed database follows the same principle: create a database and application role, restrict network access, require TLS when offered, and collect the host, port, database name, username and password for the environment file.

Plan backups before the first production migration. A database dump is useful for logical recovery, while provider snapshots or filesystem backups cover a different failure mode. Test that a backup can actually be restored; a file that has never been restored is not a verified rollback plan.
Deploy the Django code and virtual environment
Clone as the deploy user
Switch to the deploy account and place the application outside system directories. The exact repository URL and branch depend on your project.
sudo -iu deploy
cd /srv
git clone <repository-url> myproject
cd /srv/myproject
python3 -m venv .venv
. .venv/bin/activate
python -m pip install --upgrade pip
pip install -r requirements.txt
Pin production dependencies in the requirements file. Install Gunicorn in that same virtual environment, and make sure the PostgreSQL driver used by the project is present.
. /srv/myproject/.venv/bin/activate
pip install gunicorn
python -c 'import django, psycopg2; print(django.get_version())'
If your project uses a different PostgreSQL driver, import that driver instead. Keep the virtual environment tied to the release it serves; replacing dependencies in place without a release record makes rollback difficult.
Store secrets outside Git
Create an environment file readable by root and the deploy group, but not by other users. It should not be inside the repository.
sudo install -o root -g deploy -m 0640 /dev/null /etc/myproject/myproject.env
sudoedit /etc/myproject/myproject.env

DJANGO_CSRF_TRUSTED_ORIGINS=https://example.com,https://www.example.com
DATABASE_URL=postgresql://myproject_user:[email protected]:5432/myproject_db
Use your project’s existing configuration library or explicit environment parsing. If a password contains characters reserved in a database URL, encode it correctly or use separate variables such as DB_NAME, DB_USER, DB_PASSWORD, DB_HOST and DB_PORT. Never commit this file, a private key, a production secret key or a database dump to the repository.

python manage.py collectstatic --noinput
Set STATIC_ROOT to a directory intended for collected assets, such as /srv/myproject/staticfiles, and set MEDIA_ROOT to a persistent upload directory if the application accepts user files. Static files are not automatically available merely because they exist in an app’s static directory; production needs an explicit collection and serving strategy. Media files require additional backup and access decisions because they are user data, not rebuildable assets.
Create an administrator only through a controlled session, then verify that the admin page loads after Nginx is configured. Do not create production users by embedding credentials in deployment scripts.

Three workers are only an example starting point, not a performance guarantee. Worker count depends on available memory, request duration and concurrency. Increase it only while watching memory use and response behavior; each worker loads application code and database connections.
Reload systemd, enable the socket at boot and start it now.
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable --now gunicorn.socket
sudo systemctl enable gunicorn.service
sudo systemctl status gunicorn.socket
sudo systemctl status gunicorn.service
Check the socket and logs before involving Nginx.
sudo ls -l /run/gunicorn.sock
sudo journalctl -u gunicorn.service -n 100 --no-pager
curl --unix-socket /run/gunicorn.sock http://localhost/
The socket must exist and be accessible to Nginx’s group. A failed import, missing environment variable or migration error will appear in journalctl; fix that root cause rather than repeatedly restarting the service.
Configure Nginx as the public entry point
Create a site configuration that serves static and media paths directly and proxies everything else to the Gunicorn socket.
sudoedit /etc/nginx/sites-available/myproject
server {
listen 80;
server_name example.com www.example.com;
client_max_body_size 20M;
location /static/ {
alias /srv/myproject/staticfiles/;
}
location /media/ {
alias /srv/myproject/media/;
}
location / {
include proxy_params;
proxy_pass http://unix:/run/gunicorn.sock;
}
}
The trailing slash on each alias matters: it maps the URL prefix to the intended directory. Adjust the upload limit to the application’s requirements, and do not expose a media directory publicly if its contents are private. For private files, serve authorization-controlled downloads through Django or a dedicated object-storage design.

sudo systemctl reload nginx
nginx -t must succeed before every reload. Review /var/log/nginx/access.log and /var/log/nginx/error.log when a request reaches Nginx but not Django. Keep the Gunicorn socket private; do not replace proxy_pass with a publicly exposed Gunicorn port unless a specific network design requires it.
Point DNS to the VPS and enable HTTPS
Set DNS records
Create an address record for the chosen domain and, if needed, a separate record for www. Wait for the records to resolve to the VPS before requesting a certificate. The names in DNS, Nginx’s server_name, Django’s ALLOWED_HOSTS and the CSRF trusted origins must agree.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Obtain and renew a certificate
Use an ACME client such as the one supplied by your distribution or another certificate service to obtain a certificate for every public hostname. Follow that client’s Nginx integration instructions, then verify that HTTP redirects to HTTPS and that renewal is scheduled and tested. A certificate that works today but cannot renew is an operational defect.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →After TLS is active, confirm that Nginx forwards the original scheme and retain these Django settings:
SECURE_PROXY_SSL_HEADER = ('HTTP_X_FORWARDED_PROTO', 'https')
SECURE_SSL_REDIRECT = True
SESSION_COOKIE_SECURE = True
CSRF_COOKIE_SECURE = True
Test both the bare domain and any alternate hostname, including redirects, static assets, form submissions and admin login. If a browser reports a CSRF failure, check the exact origin, scheme and host rather than weakening CSRF protection.
Verify the complete deployment
Perform checks from the server and from an external network. A successful systemd status alone does not prove that DNS, TLS, Nginx, Django and PostgreSQL all work together.
- Run
python manage.py check --deploywith the production environment loaded. - Confirm
systemctl is-enabled gunicorn.socket nginxreports both services enabled. - Confirm
/run/gunicorn.sockexists after a reboot and that its group permits Nginx access. - Request the socket directly with
curl --unix-socket /run/gunicorn.sock http://localhost/. - Request the public HTTP and HTTPS endpoints with
curl -Iand verify expected status codes and redirects. - Open a page that uses CSS and JavaScript to confirm
/static/is served by Nginx. - Upload and retrieve a representative media file if the application supports uploads.
- Log in to the Django admin and submit a form that exercises CSRF protection.
- Inspect
journalctl -u gunicorn.service, Nginx access and error logs, and PostgreSQL logs for unexpected errors. - Reboot during a maintenance window and repeat the socket, HTTPS and database checks.
Keep a short deployment record containing the commit identifier, migration names, backup identifier and the commands used. That record turns an emergency rollback from guesswork into a repeatable operation.
Release updates without losing the rollback path
A basic release process is: fetch code, install dependencies in an isolated environment, run checks, take or verify a database backup, apply migrations, collect static files and reload Gunicorn. Run migrations before serving code that depends on them, but design schema changes so old and new application versions can coexist when a reload is not instantaneous.
cd /srv/myproject
git fetch --all
git checkout <release-commit>. . /srv/myproject/.venv/bin/activate
pip install -r requirements.txt
set -a
. /etc/myproject/myproject.env
set +a
python manage.py check --deploy
python manage.py migrate
python manage.py collectstatic --noinput
sudo systemctl reload gunicorn
Keep the previous commit and dependency set available until the new release has passed smoke tests. Code rollback cannot undo an irreversible database migration, so define a forward-fix or a tested database restore procedure before applying destructive changes. Back up uploaded media separately from PostgreSQL because a database dump does not contain files stored under MEDIA_ROOT.
Troubleshoot by locating the failing layer
| Symptom | Likely layer | What to check |
|---|---|---|
502 Bad Gateway |
Nginx to Gunicorn | Run systemctl status gunicorn, inspect journalctl -u gunicorn, verify /run/gunicorn.sock exists and check socket ownership and group permissions. |
| Gunicorn exits immediately | Django startup | Run the exact ExecStart command manually as deploy; check the WSGI module, virtual-environment path, installed dependencies and required environment variables. |
| DisallowedHost | Django host validation | Add the exact DNS hostname to ALLOWED_HOSTS; do not use a wildcard unless you understand the security consequences. |
| CSRF verification failed | Origin or proxy settings | Check CSRF_TRUSTED_ORIGINS includes the complete HTTPS origin and that Nginx forwards the host and scheme. |
| CSS or JavaScript returns 404 | Static collection or Nginx | Run collectstatic, verify STATIC_ROOT, confirm the Nginx alias path and inspect the access log. |
| Database connection refused | PostgreSQL or environment | Check PostgreSQL service status, host and port values, role permissions, firewall rules and whether the remote database allows the VPS address. |
| Redirect loop after enabling HTTPS | Proxy scheme handling | Verify the TLS virtual host, proxy_params, SECURE_PROXY_SSL_HEADER and that only one component is forcing redirects. |
| Uploads disappear after a redeploy | Filesystem layout | Keep MEDIA_ROOT outside disposable release directories and include it in backups, or move media to durable object storage. |
Know when a single VPS is no longer the right shape
The stack is attractive because it is understandable and inexpensive to operate at small scale, but every responsibility remains on one machine. Compare alternatives against the actual requirement rather than choosing by fashion.
| Option | Advantages | Costs and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Single VPS with Nginx and Gunicorn | Full operating-system control, simple request path, predictable manual administration and easy access to local files. | You manage patching, monitoring, certificates, backups, failover and capacity; one host can interrupt the whole service. |
| Platform as a service | Automated builds, process supervision, certificates and often managed databases. | Less control over the host, platform-specific deployment rules and potentially higher or less predictable recurring cost. |
| Docker Compose on one server | Reproducible service images and clearer dependency isolation. | Containers do not provide high availability by themselves; you still manage the host, networking, storage, backups and upgrades. |
| Caddy or another integrated web server | Can simplify reverse-proxy configuration and certificate automation. | Changes the operational tooling and configuration model; verify compatibility with your team’s monitoring and deployment practices. |
| Managed PostgreSQL | Automated backups, patching and often replication or point-in-time recovery. | Network latency, provider limits and recurring service cost; credentials and network policy still require careful management. |
| ASGI deployment | Appropriate for asynchronous Django features and protocols that need an async server. | Different process workers, proxy behavior and observability; the WSGI Gunicorn recipe here may not meet the application’s needs. |
Move beyond one VPS when uptime requirements demand redundant application instances, when traffic cannot fit comfortably within one host’s memory and CPU, or when database recovery objectives require managed replication and point-in-time recovery. Add automation only when it removes a real repeated failure mode: CI/CD, infrastructure configuration, centralized logs and monitored backups are useful extensions of the same operational discipline.
