The fastest dependable way to build a one-page business site in WordPress is to activate a block theme, open Appearance → Editor, and assemble the front page from clearly ordered sections. Give visitors the essential answer in one scrollable page—what you do, who you serve, why they should trust you, and how to contact you—then connect a short navigation menu to section anchors such as #services and #contact.

Decide whether a one-page site fits the business
A one-page site is a focused landing experience, not simply a long page with every piece of company information. It works best when the business has a narrow offer, a small service area, and information that changes infrequently. A visitor can understand the proposition without opening several pages, while a persistent call to action keeps the next step visible.

Use the format for a consultant, contractor, studio, local professional, event service, or single-product business that can explain its offer in a handful of sections. Start with a one-page home page but add conventional Pages when the business needs detailed service descriptions, multiple locations, legal documents, a blog, recruitment information, or substantial search coverage. WordPress Pages are designed for timeless, non-chronological content and can be added to the navigation.
A practical scope test
- Can the primary audience and offer be stated in one sentence?
- Can the main services be explained in a few outcome-focused cards or short paragraphs?
- Will a prospect make one primary decision, such as requesting a quote, booking a call, or visiting a location?
- Can proof, contact details, and required policies fit without making the page difficult to scan?
If several answers are no, retain the one-page layout as the home-page hub and link to separate service, location, legal, or editorial Pages.

Plan the content before opening WordPress
Write the information architecture first. A useful sequence answers a visitor’s questions in the order they arise:
| Section | Job on the page | Content to prepare |
|---|---|---|
| Header and brand | Identify the business and expose the next action | Logo or name, short navigation, primary call-to-action label |
| Hero | Explain the offer immediately | What you do, who you serve, service area if relevant, one clear action |
| About or positioning | Supply concise credibility | Experience, approach, location, or a specific reason to choose the business |
| Services | Show what the visitor can buy | Main services or packages expressed as outcomes rather than internal jargon |
| Proof | Reduce perceived risk | Selected work, substantiated testimonials, certifications, or client logos |
| Contact | Convert interest into an inquiry | Phone, email, area served, hours, and a form when lead capture is needed |
| Footer | Provide utility and required details | Business details, social links, copyright, and privacy-policy link |
Choose one primary conversion action. A secondary phone or email link can support visitors who are ready to talk, but several competing buttons dilute the decision. Repeat the primary action near the end only after the visitor has seen the services and proof.

Set up hosting and a domain before construction. Confirm that the host provides a working WordPress installation, HTTPS, backups, and a way to manage the domain’s DNS. Keep the domain short, pronounceable, and consistent with the business name. Decide which address is canonical—for example, the version with or without www—and redirect the other version after launch.
Do not wait until the end to verify that email sent to the business address works. The contact form and every mail link should use an inbox someone monitors, and the form’s delivery route should be tested on the real domain.
Choose and activate a block theme
- In the WordPress dashboard, go to Appearance → Themes → Add New.
- Filter or search the official Theme Directory, open a theme’s preview, and check its typography, spacing, header behavior, and mobile layout.
- Activate the block theme that gives you a clean starting structure. A block theme uses blocks for the site’s navigation, header, content, footer, templates, and styles.
A block theme is important here because the Site Editor is available when one is active. It lets you edit global styles, templates, template parts, and navigation in the same interface rather than locking the header and footer inside a separate theme panel.
Rank #2
What to compare when evaluating themes
| Criterion | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Site Editor support | Can the front page, header, footer, navigation, and global styles be edited as blocks? |
| Mobile controls | Can columns stack, typography scale, and spacing be adjusted without breaking the desktop layout? |
| Loading and asset control | Does the design avoid unnecessary scripts, large images, and decorative effects? |
| Accessibility | Are heading structure, keyboard focus, color contrast, and menu behavior usable? |
| Forms and integrations | Can a form, map or calendar be embedded without creating an unusable mobile experience? |
| Updates and support | Is the theme maintained and documented clearly? |
| Migration | Will your content remain understandable if the theme is replaced later? |
The Theme Directory provides filters and previews, but a preview cannot guarantee that a theme suits a particular business or conversion goal. Evaluate the actual editing controls and remove demo content rather than trying to preserve a design that does not fit the message.
Build the front page in the Site Editor
- Open Appearance → Editor. The available panels vary slightly by WordPress release and theme, but a block theme exposes templates, patterns, styles, and navigation here.
- Create or edit the front-page template. A template is a collection of blocks that defines the document structure.
- Use a top-level Group block for each major area so you can control its background, spacing, and anchor. Use Cover for a hero with an image or color overlay, Columns for service cards, Buttons for actions, Heading and Paragraph for text, Image for selected work, and Social Icons where social profiles help visitors.
- Keep the page’s heading hierarchy logical. Use one main heading for the business proposition, then descending headings for the sections and their subsections.
- Save the template and preview it at both desktop and mobile widths before polishing details.
Header and brand
Place the business name or logo at the left, a compact Navigation block beside it, and the primary action where it remains easy to reach. A header that is visually simple is easier to use on a narrow screen. If the logo is an image, provide meaningful alternative text; if the business name is already visible as text, mark a purely decorative duplicate appropriately.
Hero
The first viewport should make three things obvious: what the business does, who it serves, and what to do next. A headline such as “Residential electrical repairs in Leeds” is more useful than a vague slogan. Add one sentence that clarifies the result or service area and a button such as “Request a quote.” Avoid a carousel that hides the proposition behind rotating slides.
About or positioning
Use a short paragraph to establish relevant experience, method, location, or availability. This is not a full company history. State a fact the audience can use to decide whether the business is suitable.
Services
Group related work into a small number of scannable items. Describe the customer’s outcome—such as “same-week boiler repair”—and add a brief boundary or starting condition when it prevents a misleading expectation. Link to a separate service Page if a service needs pricing tables, technical specifications, or extensive search-oriented copy.

Proof
Show only evidence the business can substantiate. A small selection of completed work, a named testimonial with permission, or a relevant certification is stronger than a wall of unsupported claims. Add captions or context so an image demonstrates what was delivered.
Contact and footer
Present phone, email, service area, and opening hours as text as well as links. Use a phone link such as tel:+441234567890 and an email link such as mailto:[email protected] where appropriate. Keep the form near these details so a visitor can choose the channel that suits them. The footer should include business details, social links that are actually monitored, copyright information, and a link to the privacy policy.
Connect navigation to sections with HTML anchors
One-page navigation works by pairing a menu URL beginning with a hash and a matching anchor on the destination block.
- Select the Group or other block that contains the About section.
- Open the block’s Advanced settings and enter
aboutin HTML Anchor. Do not include the hash. - Repeat for other sections, using unique values such as
services, work, andcontact. Anchor values should be lowercase, contain no spaces, and not be duplicated on the page. - Open the Navigation block, add or edit a menu item named “About,” and set its link to
#about. Point “Services” to#servicesand “Contact” to#contact. - Preview the published URL, not only the editor canvas. Click every item from the top and from the sticky header if you use one.
The anchor belongs to the section wrapper, not to a heading that might move when the layout changes. If a sticky header covers the first lines of a section after a jump, add suitable scroll spacing in the theme’s styles or adjust the section’s top padding.

Use a sticky header and smooth scrolling carefully
To keep navigation available during a long scroll, wrap the header in a Group block and set its position to Sticky. Check that the header does not cover content, trap keyboard focus, or consume most of the mobile viewport.
Smooth scrolling is optional. It can make short jumps feel connected, but motion can disorient some visitors. If you add it, retain a reduced-motion condition:
@media (prefers-reduced-motion: no-preference) {
html { scroll-behavior: smooth; }
}
Visitors whose operating system requests reduced motion will then receive normal instant jumps. Always test anchor movement with a keyboard and a screen reader as well as a mouse.
Add a contact form without losing direct contact details
Install a reputable forms plugin when the business needs structured inquiries. Add its form block or shortcode to the Contact section, and keep the phone number and email visible in case a visitor cannot or does not want to use a form.
Configure the form for useful leads
- Ask only for information needed to respond, such as name, email, phone, service type, and a concise message.
- Label every field visibly; do not rely on placeholder text as the label.
- Set a clear success message and a failure message that tells the visitor what to do next.
- Send notifications to a monitored address and set a reply-to field from the visitor’s email rather than spoofing the site’s sender address.
- Include a privacy notice that explains why the information is collected and link to the full privacy policy.
- Use the plugin’s spam controls without placing an inaccessible challenge in front of every visitor.
Submit the form from a logged-out browser on the real domain, confirm the success state, verify delivery in the destination inbox, and check that the reply address works. A form that appears to submit but never reaches the business is a conversion failure.
Apply a consistent visual and content system
Choose one display treatment for headings, a readable body size, a restrained color palette, and consistent spacing values. Buttons should have strong contrast against their background and a recognizable hover and keyboard-focus state. Keep the first viewport understandable without forcing a visitor to scroll to discover the offer.
Compress images and provide dimensions that match their displayed size. Use useful alternative text for informative images and leave decorative images without redundant descriptions. Avoid autoplay video, parallax, and other motion that competes with the primary action. If a background image carries essential meaning, repeat that meaning in text because background images do not provide a dependable text alternative.
Mobile-specific checks
- Confirm that service columns stack in a sensible order.
- Make buttons and form controls comfortable to tap without zooming.
- Check that the sticky header and anchor jumps leave headings visible.
- Ensure long email addresses, phone numbers, and form errors wrap rather than overflow.
- Review every image in a narrow viewport; a crop that works on desktop may hide the subject on mobile.
Choose one page or a broader site deliberately
| Need | One-page home | Home plus separate Pages |
|---|---|---|
| Focused offer and small amount of evergreen information | Usually the clearest choice | May add unnecessary navigation |
| Several detailed services | Summarize and link out when needed | Separate service Pages provide room for depth |
| Multiple locations | List the area briefly | Location Pages can answer local questions individually |
| Legal, policy, or recruitment information | Keep essential links in the footer | Separate Pages are easier to maintain and reference |
| Blog or substantial search coverage | Use the one-page home as an entry point | Chronological posts and topic Pages belong elsewhere |
This is a content and maintenance decision, not a claim that one format automatically ranks or converts better. No universal conversion rate or performance benchmark establishes a winner. Match the architecture to the questions visitors actually need answered.

Pre-launch quality assurance
Run this checklist on the staging or final domain before announcing the site:
- The domain resolves securely and the chosen canonical address redirects consistently.
- The hero explains the offer, audience, and primary action without requiring a scroll.
- Every navigation anchor, button, phone link, email link, and social link reaches the intended destination.
- The form succeeds, fails gracefully, sends to the monitored inbox, and displays its privacy notice.
- Headings follow a logical order, images have appropriate alternative text, and text and buttons have sufficient contrast.
- Keyboard users can open and close navigation, reach every control, and see a visible focus indicator.
- The layout is readable at desktop and mobile widths, including with enlarged text.
- Images are correctly sized, unnecessary motion is removed, and no demo content or placeholder copy remains.
- The footer contains business details, a privacy-policy link, and only social profiles the business maintains.
Troubleshoot common one-page problems
A menu item does nothing
Check that the menu URL includes the hash, the target block’s HTML Anchor omits it, and spelling and capitalization match exactly. Remove duplicate anchors and test the published page rather than the editor preview.
The jump lands beneath the header
The sticky header is covering the target. Reduce its height, add top spacing to the anchored section, or adjust the theme’s scroll-offset styling. Recheck at the narrowest viewport where the header may wrap to two lines.
The Site Editor is missing
The active theme may not be a block theme. Return to Appearance → Themes, activate a block theme from the official directory, and then reopen Appearance → Editor.
The form shows success but no message arrives
Inspect the plugin’s notification recipient and reply-to settings, check spam and server mail logs if available, and send another test from an external address. Keep a visible phone and email link until delivery is reliable.
The page feels overwhelming
Shorten paragraphs, remove repeated claims, combine overlapping services, and move technical detail to a separate Page. A one-page site should guide one decision, not function as a company archive.
Maintain the site after launch
Review the offer, hours, service area, testimonials, certifications, and contact details whenever they change. Keep WordPress, the block theme, and the forms plugin updated, with a backup available before updates. Re-test anchors, forms, and mobile behavior after a theme or plugin change. If the business later outgrows the format, retain the front page as the hub and add Pages rather than forcing every new topic into one increasingly long scroll.
