For a session-based game, clients connect to game-server processes while backend services authenticate players, match them, manage sessions, and store durable game data. Features that do not need a continuously running simulation can often use a different design, such as event-driven functions and managed data stores. The right combination depends on your gameplay, player geography, platform requirements, and the operational work your team can own.
Start by separating gameplay from game features
Draw a boundary between the part of your game that must respond within a live session and the features that can tolerate ordinary API or asynchronous processing. This is an architectural choice, not merely a hosting choice: the two sides have different latency, scaling, and recovery needs.
Real-time, session-based gameplay
Competitive or cooperative sessions commonly use authoritative dedicated game-server processes. The client sends gameplay traffic to the allocated server; backend services handle identity, matchmaking, session management, and persistent player or game information. Amazon Web Services’ session-based reference architecture follows this division, using GameLift for hosting, serverless services for orchestration, DynamoDB for ticket state, and a client connection to the allocated server. Those are concrete AWS examples, not requirements for every game.
Supporting features and lightweight interactions
Features that do not need a long-running simulation process can be designed independently. AWS’s web-based trivia example combines API Gateway and Lambda for REST endpoints, DynamoDB for game and player data, and SNS-triggered asynchronous work for progress and statistics. The example separates data stores according to feature needs, which can make monitoring and ownership boundaries clearer.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For lightweight multiplayer interactions, that architecture also describes WebSockets; MQTT-based broadcast and Redis Pub/Sub or Streams are alternatives. Choose among them according to message patterns, delivery expectations, scale, and the team’s ability to operate the components. Do not assume that a serverless feature backend can replace authoritative game servers when the game requires a persistent real-time simulation.
How should matchmaking connect players to game servers?
Design the matchmaking path as an explicit handoff from a verified player identity to a validated game session. The AWS reference flow is useful as a checklist, whether you use those services or build equivalent components:

- Establish player identity. Obtain identity through the game’s chosen identity system before accepting a match request.
- Submit a match request. Send an authenticated request with the relevant player or skill context and regional latency measurements.
- Match and place the session. Match compatible players, then place their session in a suitable fleet location.
- Track ticket state. Persist or publish the ticket’s status so the client can learn whether it is waiting, matched, or ready to connect. Polling is one option; the AWS design also describes WebSockets for server-initiated updates.
- Return connection details. Once placement is ready, provide the client with the server address and port and the player-session identifier.
- Validate at the server. The game server checks the player-session identifier before admitting the player.
Do not treat a client-supplied player ID or server address as proof of identity or permission to join. The cited AWS design signs requests and validates player credentials, then has the game server validate the player-session identifier. Adapt those trust boundaries to the identity provider and hosting platform you select.
Plan reliability around player-visible failures
Monitoring only whether a cloud service is running is not enough. Instrument the whole path from match request through successful server join, and connect backend telemetry to game-server health so operators can distinguish a matchmaking problem from a placement or join problem.

Measure the outcomes players experience
- Matchmaking request failures, time waiting for a match, and tickets that do not reach a usable session.
- Session startup and join success, including rejected or timed-out joins.
- Disconnects and regional health, correlated with game-server and backend events.
- API errors, function errors, and game-server process health.
These are practical metrics derived from the documented flow, not universal service-level objectives. Set thresholds from the game’s requirements and observed behavior rather than copying a generic target.
Automate detection and recovery, then test it
AWS’s managed-hosting guidance describes servers distributed across multiple Availability Zones, replacement of failed game-server processes or instances, and horizontally scalable matchmaking ticket storage. These are behaviors of the provider-specific example; a self-hosted system needs its own health checks, safe placement rules, recovery automation, and tested operating procedures.

AWS recommends CloudWatch alarms for appropriate game-server metrics and errors in API Gateway and Lambda. Its observability guidance also describes near-real-time server logs, process-level metrics, and distributed tracing for backend APIs. Build dashboards that let an operator follow a player’s failed join across ticketing, placement, API calls, and server logs. Define who owns each alert and what action follows it; an alert without an actionable response does not restore a session.
In the AWS solution guidance, the sample matchmaking ticket records are automatically deleted after 3 hours. That is a setting in the sample, not a general retention recommendation. Choose ticket expiration and cleanup behavior to suit your queue, retry, and support needs.

Choose regions for latency, recovery, and operational fit
Adding regions can place backend capacity nearer to player populations and give matchmaking another location to consider. It also adds deployment, monitoring, and data-consistency work. AWS’s multi-region reference describes latency-based routing to nearby backend capacity and the option for regional matchmaking to find a session in another region when necessary. It also describes Global Accelerator routing to reduce latency and jitter, and WAF and Shield protections for exposed services.
| Design | What it can provide | What the team must account for |
|---|---|---|
| One region | A simpler starting point with backend and session capacity in one geographic area. | Whether players outside that area can meet the game’s latency needs, and how the service recovers if that region is unavailable. |
| Multiple regions | Backend capacity nearer to more players and the possibility of matching into another region when local capacity is unsuitable. | More deployment and operational complexity, plus decisions about session placement, player data ownership, and consistency across regions. |
Compare these approaches against where players are, the latency the game can tolerate, recovery goals, and the consistency model for player and session data. Geographic proximity is an input, not proof that every game benefits from deploying everywhere. AWS also describes Local Zones and hybrid or on-premises options for coverage needs or existing infrastructure; whether they fit depends on the workload and team.
Fit the design to platform and team constraints
Platform multiplayer services can cover distinct needs rather than one complete backend. Microsoft’s Game Development Kit overview groups capabilities such as networking, chat, invites and joins, session management, matchmaking, and session browsing, and notes that different services may suit different needs. It distinguishes Xbox-specific APIs from cross-platform or custom-service needs. Its documentation describes PlayFab Matchmaking as identity- and platform-agnostic and notes limitations in particular Xbox matchmaking services.
Before committing, verify current platform requirements and SDK versions, how platform identity maps to your own player accounts, and what cross-play requires. A platform API that fits one console flow may not cover all platforms or the backend responsibilities your game retains.

- Gameplay: What latency and jitter can the simulation tolerate, and does it require an authoritative, continuously running server?
- Operations: Which hosting, scaling, and recovery tasks can the team reliably own?
- Failure behavior: What happens when a process, instance, backend dependency, or region fails?
- Identity and platforms: Do the identity and multiplayer APIs support the platforms, account model, and cross-play expectations?
- Observability and security: Can the team trace a failed player journey, protect exposed services, and validate session admission?
- Economics: Compare costs under expected and peak traffic using the actual candidate designs; the cited architecture guidance does not establish a neutral current provider price comparison.
Keep service ownership legible as the design grows. A feature-specific data store or separately monitored service is useful only if the team knows who operates it, what player-facing behavior depends on it, and how it fails safely.
