You can design and 3D print a custom gaming miniature by planning its scale and silhouette, sculpting the large forms before small details, preparing the model in a slicer, then printing and finishing it. For a highly detailed small character, resin is the better-supported choice; FDM is often a more practical fit for larger, simpler pieces and terrain.
What you need to design and print a miniature
- A clear idea of the miniature’s game role, physical scale, pose, and base footprint.
- Digital sculpting or modeling software, such as Blender, Fusion 360, Sculptris, or ZBrush. These are examples, not a ranked comparison. Formlabs describes ZBrush as a digital sculpting tool used for realistic figurines: Formlabs’ miniature guide.
- A printable model file and slicing software compatible with your printer.
- A 3D printer and suitable print material. Resin and FDM have different strengths and cleanup requirements.
- For a resin workflow, supplies for cleaning and curing the print. Primer and paints are optional if you want a painted miniature.
The overall sequence is: plan, sketch, sculpt, prepare the file, choose a process, slice and print, then clean and finish.
Plan the miniature around its game role and scale
Decide what the model is for before sculpting: a player character, creature, vehicle, objective marker, or scenery piece. Set its approximate height and base footprint early. A miniature intended for a game needs a readable pose and silhouette at tabletop distance, not just detail that looks impressive when enlarged on screen.
Sketch the pose and proportions as a reference. Identify the features that make the piece recognizable—perhaps a distinctive weapon, head shape, armor outline, or stance—and prioritize those at the intended physical scale. If a feature will be too small to print clearly, simplify or enlarge it rather than relying on fine digital detail to survive the process.

Sculpt large forms before adding detail
Block in the pose and major masses first: torso, limbs, head, clothing or armor, and the overall shape of any equipment. Refine those forms until the character reads clearly from several angles. Only then add smaller details, weapons, accessories, and a base.
This order helps avoid a common mismatch: a model can contain intricate surface detail on screen yet lose it in the printed miniature. Keep important features bold enough for the final size, and consider whether thin or projecting parts will be fragile or difficult to support during printing.
Digital sculpting suits organic characters and high-resolution surface work; conventional modeling tools can also be used, particularly for more geometric objects. The software examples above are options rather than a current performance or ease-of-use ranking.

Prepare the model for printing
Export the model in a format accepted by your slicing software. A 2023 guide recommends STL as a handoff format, but check the formats supported by your particular slicer and printer. The slicer converts the model into printer instructions; an exported model is not necessarily ready to print as-is.

Confirm the model appears at the intended physical size; digital models can import at an unexpected scale.
- Choose an orientation. Rotate the miniature to suit the printer and reduce problematic overhangs where practical.
- Inspect supports and contact points. Unsupported overhangs can fail during printing, while support contact can leave marks that need attention afterward.
- Select printer- and material-appropriate settings. Follow the guidance for the specific printer, resin or filament, and slicer. Exposure and layer-height settings are not universal recipes.
- Review the sliced preview. Check that the model and supports appear as intended before sending the job to the printer.

Choose resin or FDM based on the miniature you want
The right process depends on the model’s size and detail, your budget, and how much post-print cleanup you are willing to do. The available guides support resin for small, detailed character models and FDM for larger or less detailed pieces, including terrain; they do not establish a current best printer or provide an independent head-to-head test of consumer machines.

Choose resin if crisp character detail is your priority and you can manage the additional cleanup. Choose FDM if the model is larger or simpler, terrain is the main goal, or resin handling and post-processing are poor fits for your workspace. Avoid choosing solely by a headline printer price: prices change, and the available sources do not offer a current neutral price comparison.
Print, clean, and finish the miniature
Print from the slicer using the material and settings specified for your particular setup. Make sure the work area and handling practices follow the printer and material manufacturer’s instructions, especially when working with liquid resin.
For a resin print
- Remove the print and detach supports carefully, taking care around small or delicate parts.
- Clean the model using the method and supplies specified for the resin and printer.
- Cure the print before normal handling or painting, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
A wash-and-cure station is an optional convenience, not a requirement. Manual cleaning with isopropyl alcohol and containers, followed by curing, is another workflow described in the 2023 guide. Resin handling and disposal requirements vary by product; follow the instructions for your specific material and equipment.

For an FDM print
Remove supports and inspect the contact areas. Sanding can reduce support marks, but small details may be easy to damage. Layer lines may remain visible, especially on curved surfaces.
Optional painting
If you want a painted finish, sanding, primer, miniature paints, and a protective topcoat are optional steps. Start with a clean, dry model and use products according to their labels. Painting is not necessary for a miniature to be usable at the table.

Hero Forge describes a platform for designing and ordering custom miniatures. Its support archive says its art and models are not commercially licensed for other projects; confirm the service’s current terms directly before relying on that statement: Hero Forge Support.
Designing and printing yourself versus ordering a custom miniature
