Design the course around what learners need to do, then record only the lessons that help them do it. Start by identifying learners and constraints, write measurable outcomes, map modules and assessments, and plan accessible media before recording. Review the course from a learner’s perspective, then improve it using feedback from delivery.

1. Analyze learners, needs, and constraints

Begin with the gap between what learners can currently do and what they should be able to do. That gap—not the camera or software—sets the course’s purpose. HAKA’s 2024 guide recommends analyzing needs, learners, conditions, and content before choosing activities or tools (HAKA guide).

Write down what you know and what you need to find out:

  • Learners: their prior knowledge, experience, language, and comfort with the technology they will use.
  • Delivery conditions: whether the course is online, in person, synchronous, asynchronous, or blended; audience size; and how learners will access it.
  • Resources: available time, budget, existing material, technical skills, and institutional or production support.
  • Content: what learners must know or do, which material already exists, and what needs to be created or updated.

These answers help you choose a realistic format. For example, a demonstration may suit a practical skill, while a short reading and a worked example may be clearer for a concept that learners need to revisit at their own pace. Choose each medium for its instructional purpose and the access it gives learners.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

2. Write measurable learning outcomes

State what learners will be able to do by the end of the course or a module. Use observable actions rather than broad intentions such as “understand the topic.” Where it matters, include the context or conditions in which learners must apply the skill.

For instance, a course about a software workflow might aim for learners to “export a project using the specified format and verify that the exported file opens correctly.” The outcome makes it possible to plan instruction and check whether learners can perform the task.

Use the outcomes to decide what content belongs in the course, in what order to teach it, which activities will give learners practice, and how progress will be assessed. HAKA’s guide treats outcomes as a foundation for content, sequencing, teaching methods, assessment, and the learning environment (HAKA guide).

3. Map the course into modules

Arrange material into a sequence that takes learners from their starting point toward the outcomes. Give modules clear, consistent names and make the course structure predictable. University of Calgary’s checklist recommends including an outline and organizing course content so learners can follow its path (Online Course Design Checklist).

A useful module plan identifies:

  • A brief overview and the module’s objectives.
  • What learners should do, in order, such as read, watch, practice, or submit work.
  • Required materials and any technology learners need.
  • Activities and assessments tied to the module objectives.
  • A short summary, reflection, or transition that connects to the next module.

Explain how modules fit together and what learners are expected to complete. Keep instructions and navigation consistent so learners can focus on learning rather than figuring out where to go next.

4. Align practice and assessment with the outcomes

For each important outcome, decide how learners will practice and how they will show they have achieved it. An assessment should measure the outcome—not merely recall whichever details were easiest to include in a quiz. Explain the assessment’s purpose, steps, and grading criteria before learners begin.

Use low-stakes formative practice where learners can check their understanding and get feedback, and use summative assessment when you need to judge achievement. Break substantial assignments into smaller stages when that helps learners act on feedback or correct misunderstandings before the final submission. Models, examples, and chances to ask questions can make expectations more concrete.

The National Standards for Quality Online Learning state that “A variety of assessment strategies are used throughout the course, geared toward learning and engagement, and learners are provided with feedback on their progress” (Quality Online Courses). Apply that principle by choosing assessment methods that fit the outcomes and giving learners useful information about their progress.

5. Decide what to record—and what not to

Recording is one instructional medium, not the course itself. Use it when showing, explaining, or demonstrating something will help learners achieve an outcome. Connect each recording to a question, activity, or assessment so learners know what to notice and what to do afterward.

Organize videos around coherent topics rather than treating a long recording as automatically suitable for online learning. The University of South Carolina Center for Teaching Excellence gives one example: dividing a 30-minute lecture into three topic-based 10-minute videos. That is an illustration of chunking, not a universal duration target; the right divisions depend on the material and its purpose (Online Course Development).

Before recording, outline the explanation and prepare the visuals. Check that audio will be clear and visuals legible on the screens learners are likely to use. Plan captions or transcripts and any supporting material as part of production rather than as optional cleanup.

There is no single required camera, microphone, lighting arrangement, or software package established by the guidance cited here. Choose tools according to your content, budget, available skills, learner access needs, and institutional requirements. A dedicated microphone may help in a particular setup, but instructors do not all need to buy one; prioritize intelligible audio and test your actual recording conditions.

6. Make course media accessible and lawful to use

Build accessibility into the materials and course navigation. The University of Calgary Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning’s checklist, revised March 2026, says: “Use a variety of media to ensure all materials are accessible (alt text, captions, transcripts, contrast, descriptive links)” (Online Course Design Checklist).

  • Caption video and provide transcripts for audio so learners have alternatives to listening.
  • Add alternative text to meaningful images, and use sufficient contrast and readable structure.
  • Use descriptive link text that tells learners where a link goes.
  • Check documents and course pages for accessibility, not only the video player.
  • Tell learners about technology requirements and provide a route to help when access fails.

Check permission and licensing before including third-party images, music, video, or other material. Something being available online does not by itself grant permission to reuse it. Nevada Online at the University of Nevada, Reno recommends assessing fair use and permissions for external content as part of course development (Online Course Development Essentials). If the material is not clearly licensed for your use, seek permission or choose an alternative rather than assuming an exception applies.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

7. Review the course before launch

Preview the course as a learner, not just as its author. Check that module names, instructions, links, materials, and assessments work together and that learners can tell what to do next. Ask another person to navigate the course and flag unclear directions or broken links. The University of Calgary checklist specifically recommends reviewing the course from the learner view and getting outside feedback (Online Course Design Checklist).

During the review, verify that:

  • Every module has a clear purpose and connects to a course outcome.
  • Activities and assessments give learners a way to practice or demonstrate the stated outcomes.
  • Videos play, audio is intelligible, visuals are legible, and captions or transcripts are available.
  • Links and downloadable materials work, and access requirements are clear.
  • Third-party material has appropriate permissions or licensing.

Course design does not end at launch. Evaluate how the course is working during delivery and use learner feedback and observed difficulties to revise it. HAKA presents evaluation as ongoing across the ADDIE process rather than a final, one-time step (HAKA guide).

8. Reuse recordings carefully

An old recording can save production effort, but reuse it only if it still serves the course and its intended learners. Nevada Online identifies possible barriers such as poor audio, time or date stamps, former or current students appearing, grainy images or poor lighting, and slides that are unsuitable for the current context (Online Course Development Essentials).

Review the full recording and its supporting materials before assigning it. Check accuracy, context, permissions, accessibility, and production quality. If a flaw distracts from learning or exposes information that should not be shown, update the recording, edit it where appropriate, or create a replacement.

9. Keep a YouTube course channel live with uploaded lessons

If you also publish lessons as a continuous YouTube stream, treat that as a separate distribution choice—not a substitute for a course structure, accessible materials, or learner assessment. Use only material you have the rights to stream, and ensure the stream’s content and presentation suit the intended audience.

For a do-it-yourself setup, you can keep a computer running streaming software and a playlist of recorded lessons. That approach requires the computer and its internet connection to remain available; interruptions may stop the stream, and you will need to manage the playlist and restart it if it fails.
