For a typical prerecorded SDR video, set OBS’s YouTube Live output to Rec. 709, leave HDR off, and make sure the Media Source’s YUV Color Range matches the actual video file. In OBS, add the file as a Media Source and enable Loop so it repeats. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval for live encoding and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
Set up the prerecorded video in OBS
- Add the file: In OBS, add a Media Source and select your local video.
- Enable looping: In the Media Source properties, turn on Loop. Loop is a source-level option that replays the file when playback finishes; it is separate from the stream’s color settings.
- Check the source range: In the same properties, review YUV Color Range. OBS documents Partial as the default. Match the setting to the file’s actual range rather than assuming one choice is correct for every video.
- Set the SDR output: For an ordinary SDR YouTube Live stream, use Rec. 709 and 8-bit SDR. YouTube’s encoder guidance states, “Color space: Rec. 709 for SDR.”
The Media Source range and the output color space are separate settings. Rec. 709 is YouTube’s SDR target; it does not by itself determine the correct range for a particular video. If you do not know the file’s range, inspect its metadata and test the result rather than treating a global color-space change as a guaranteed fix.
Configure YouTube Live encoding
For the live ingest signal, YouTube specifies constant bitrate (CBR) and recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency, with an interval no longer than 4 seconds. Select bitrate according to YouTube’s published resolution and frame-rate guidance and your reliable upload capacity. YouTube automatically creates viewing formats for different devices and network conditions, so configure the signal you send to YouTube rather than trying to set every viewer’s rendition.
These are live encoding requirements and recommendations, not color-range instructions. Check the OBS output and YouTube stream configuration together, then make a private or otherwise appropriate test stream. YouTube’s processing and the specific playback chain can affect how the result appears.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
When to use HDR instead
HDR is a separate workflow, not a general color-quality switch for SDR footage. Use it only when the prerecorded source is genuinely HDR and your playback, OBS output, encoder, and YouTube stream configuration all support HDR. For SDR footage, keep output SDR unless you have deliberately converted the material and configured the complete chain for HDR.
YouTube’s documented OBS HDR setup calls for OBS 30.1 or later, an HDR source, HEVC hardware encoding, P010 color format, and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG; YouTube recommends HLG. HDR also requires a compatible stream setup. Viewers on unsupported devices receive SDR. YouTube’s HDR instructions are the relevant setup reference; OBS’s separate HDR capture guide dates from 2022, so its device list should be treated as a dated tested list, not a complete current compatibility guarantee.

| Path | Source and output | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| SDR | SDR source; Rec. 709, 8-bit output | Ordinary prerecorded videos that were made for SDR playback. |
| HDR | HDR source; compatible playback and encoding; P010 with Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG | HDR material when the complete OBS-to-YouTube chain is configured for HDR. |
Check the result and troubleshoot color issues
- Image looks washed out or too dark: Check the Media Source’s YUV Color Range against the actual file. The OBS default is Partial, but the correct range depends on the source. Test the output; changing Rec. 709 alone may not resolve a range mismatch.
- Colors look wrong only after going live: Compare a local playback with an appropriate test stream. YouTube processes the ingest signal, and the available documentation does not establish how every file, encoder, and playback chain will look after processing.
- HDR is unavailable or does not appear as HDR: Verify that the source is HDR and that the required OBS version, HEVC hardware encoding, P010 format, Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG setting, and compatible stream setup are in place. An SDR source does not become a proper HDR source just by switching the output mode.
- Video stops instead of repeating: Open the Media Source properties and enable Loop. It is not a global color setting.
- Stream ingest is unstable: Check that the output uses CBR, the keyframe interval is 2 seconds (and no more than 4), and the selected bitrate is appropriate for the resolution, frame rate, and available upload capacity.
Preserve an OBS setup for future loops
If you are recording or repackaging the video in OBS before streaming, OBS recommends MKV recording because it is more resilient to an ungraceful stop; OBS also provides built-in remuxing to MP4. Save output configuration in an OBS Profile. Scenes are stored separately in a Scene Collection, so save the profile and collection relevant to the loop setup.
