How to Design Animal Habitats in Planet Zoo 2 That Meet Welfare Needs

By VGSources Team 12 min read

Designing a welfare-friendly habitat in Planet Zoo 2 starts with the animal, not a reusable enclosure template. Read the selected species’ information, choose the correct habitat type, build space that supports its documented behaviours, and use the animal’s welfare feedback to revise the design. The launch materials describe the tools and design principles, but they do not publish a complete numerical table of area, terrain, foliage, temperature, shelter or enrichment thresholds for every species. Treat the in-game species information and welfare panel as the authority for those values.

What welfare-first habitat design means

Frontier’s official description says every species has its own needs and behaviours. That makes species selection the first design decision. A habitat that looks excellent for a grazing herd may be unsuitable for an animal that flies, climbs or lives in water. Begin by identifying what the chosen species needs to do, where it can live, and what the game reports about its welfare.

Welfare is also a feedback loop rather than a one-time construction target. Build an initial environment, watch how the animals look and sound, inspect the welfare information, then change the part of the habitat that the feedback identifies. Game director Gareth Hughes described animal welfare as “a really important part of the game loop.” The design goal is therefore a habitat that remains usable and comfortable as animals interact with it, not merely a decorative scene that looks convincing from the path.

The official material available for the October 13, 2026 launch establishes broad tools and habitat categories, but not universal launch-version numbers. Do not copy a size, foliage percentage or temperature value from another species and assume it applies to yours.

Choose the species and habitat type before placing scenery

Planet Zoo 2 supports terrestrial habitats, custom freshwater and saltwater aquariums, and custom aviaries. Fully aquatic and fully flying species make terrestrial assumptions unreliable. Decide the enclosure category first, then read the selected species’ information before laying out walls, water or guest paths.

Habitat type Best suited to Core construction elements described officially First welfare questions
Terrestrial habitat Animals that live and move on land Barriers, terrain and foliage brushes, paths, scaled pieces and individually placed construction parts Does the animal have the usable land, terrain and vegetation the in-game species information calls for? Can it reach shelter, food and any behaviour-supporting structures?
Aviary Birds and other species that fly freely Barriers, support poles and dynamic mesh covers Is the volume enclosed safely for flight? Are supports and interior objects arranged without making the usable flying area needlessly cramped?
Freshwater aquarium Species identified by the game as freshwater aquatic animals Custom aquarium construction and habitat shaping tools Does the water space match the selected species’ information, and can guests observe the animals without compromising the usable environment?
Saltwater aquarium Species identified by the game as saltwater aquatic animals Custom aquarium construction and habitat shaping tools Are you using the saltwater context specified for the species rather than treating all aquatic animals as interchangeable?

This table is a planning framework, not a substitute for the species panel. The game’s launch information does not provide a single published welfare score or a universal set of numerical thresholds for these categories.

A welfare-first building workflow

1. Read the selected species information

Open the animal’s in-game information before building. Record the needs and behaviours the game lists, including any habitat type, terrain, vegetation, shelter or social information. Pay attention to wording that describes an interaction rather than a visual preference: an animal that needs to climb, graze, herd or swim requires a habitat it can actually use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep those requirements beside you while building. Because exact launch-version values are not published in the official material, avoid relying on remembered figures from the original Planet Zoo or from an unrelated species. Use the current game’s panel for every new species and after major updates.

2. Reserve a functional footprint

Lay out the enclosure before decorating it. Leave enough continuous, usable space for the animal’s normal movement and the behaviours named in its information. A visually large perimeter can still produce a poor habitat if terrain, rocks, structures or water divide the interior into inaccessible pockets.

Plan the guest path and viewing areas at the same time. The official tools include pathing and piece-by-piece construction, so you can position viewing routes without forcing visitors through the animals’ primary movement space. Keep service and construction access in mind, but do not let a convenient path dictate a footprint that fails the species’ welfare checks.

3. Shape terrain and water with the brushes

Use the terrain brushes to form the basic environment before placing small decorative pieces. Match the broad landform to the species information: open ground for animals that move across it, varied levels where the game identifies elevation or climbing as relevant, and water only where the selected species can use it. For an aquarium, establish the water volume first and then build the surrounding viewing structure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Work in passes. Make a coarse shape, check that the animal can access the intended areas, and refine slopes or edges after the enclosure is functioning. This prevents a detailed surface from hiding a basic access problem. Do not assign a specific depth, slope or water ratio unless the current in-game information gives you one.

4. Add vegetation, shelter and cover for a purpose

Foliage brushes let you create the visual character of a habitat, but welfare depends on what the animal can use. Place vegetation where it supports the needs shown in the species information rather than filling every empty patch. Frontier’s description specifically mentions animals interacting with their surroundings, including herding and grazing on provided vegetation. That means plant placement should leave room for movement and access while still allowing the relevant interaction.

Add shelter or visual cover wherever the species information calls for it. Check the welfare panel after placing it: a shelter that is attractive from the path is not necessarily usable by the animal. If the game reports a problem, adjust the habitat rather than assuming more decorative objects will solve it.

5. Build secure boundaries and, for aviaries, a complete flight volume

Terrestrial habitats need barriers suited to the species and the enclosure layout. Build the boundary in a way that keeps the usable interior coherent, then verify the animal’s welfare information before opening the habitat to guests.

Aviaries require a different mental model. The PlayStation description identifies barriers, support poles and dynamic mesh covers, and says birds can fly freely and safely. Treat the aviary as an enclosed three-dimensional volume rather than a flat pen. Use support poles and interior pieces to create useful structure, but check that they do not turn the available flight space into a series of obstructed corners. The game’s species information remains the source for any species-specific flight, space or habitat values.

6. Provide structures that enable documented behaviours

Behavioural support is part of welfare, not an optional decoration category. Frontier describes herding and grazing, while Hughes’ interview gives chimpanzees as an example of animals that can hang from, sleep on and otherwise interact with climbing-frame beams. These examples demonstrate the design principle: a structure should be placed where the animal can reach and use it, and its function should be checked in the welfare feedback.

Do not treat the chimpanzee example as a complete list of requirements for chimpanzees or any other species. It illustrates why you should read the selected animal’s information and watch its behaviour instead of importing a generic “enrichment” layout.

7. Make observation part of the layout

Place guest paths and viewing points where you can see the areas that matter to the animal’s behaviour. Clear observation makes the next welfare iteration easier: you can notice whether animals use a structure, remain in one area, move through the habitat or avoid a section. Good viewing does not mean exposing every part of the habitat. Preserve quiet or covered areas when the species information and welfare feedback indicate that animals need them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Run a feedback pass before polishing

Once the basic habitat is built, stop adding decoration and inspect the animals. Hughes reported that players can read mood through appearance and sounds. Use those cues as prompts to investigate, not as a rigid translation table: a particular sound or posture should not be declared proof of one specific unmet need unless the launch-version game confirms it.

Cross-check what you observe against the in-game welfare information. If it identifies a need, change one relevant part of the habitat, then observe again. A single-variable pass makes cause and effect easier to understand than changing terrain, foliage, structures and paths all at once.

9. Polish only after the welfare checks are stable

Scaling, piece-by-piece construction, foliage brushes and ready-to-place blueprints make it easy to add visual detail. Use those tools after the animal has a functioning environment. Recheck welfare whenever decoration changes usable ground, blocks a route, removes cover or alters the interior space.

Designing each habitat context

Terrestrial habitats

Start with a continuous movement area, then add the terrain, vegetation, shelter and behaviour-supporting structures listed for the species. Use the terrain and foliage brushes for the broad environment and scaled or individually placed pieces for functional details. A herd-focused layout should leave enough connected ground for animals to move together and reach grazing areas. A climbing-focused layout should position beams or similar structures where the animals can actually interact with them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the guest route outside the animal’s important movement corridors when possible. If a path, viewing structure or decorative cluster divides the interior, inspect the welfare panel again rather than assuming the enclosure’s outer dimensions tell the whole story.

Aviaries

Build the barrier and dynamic mesh cover as a single safety envelope. Support poles can provide structure, but the design must retain a usable flight volume. Avoid treating an aviary as a terrestrial habitat with a roof added at the end; the vertical space is part of the habitat from the first layout pass.

Observe where birds fly and where they settle. If an interior element creates an inaccessible or constantly avoided area, reposition it and check the species feedback again. The official description confirms the construction components and free-flight goal, but it does not publish a universal flight-volume number for every species.

Freshwater and saltwater aquariums

Choose freshwater or saltwater according to the species information, then shape the custom aquarium around the animals’ usable water space and the planned viewing windows. Build the water volume before surrounding scenery so that decoration does not accidentally become the design constraint.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Aquarium construction is described at a broad level in the official launch material. Do not invent filtration settings, depth targets or species-by-species water chemistry values from that description. Check the game’s current information and welfare feedback for those details.

How to interpret welfare feedback without guessing

Use three evidence layers together:

  1. The species information: This is where the game states the selected animal’s needs and behaviours.
  2. The welfare panel: This identifies which part of the habitat currently requires attention.
  3. Direct observation: Appearance, sounds and visible interactions show how animals are responding in the enclosure.

When the layers appear to disagree, trust the explicit in-game welfare information for the actionable requirement and use observation to locate the problem. For example, an animal avoiding a corner may prompt you to inspect access, terrain or a structure, but the avoidance alone does not prove which need is unmet.

After every meaningful change, allow enough time to observe the result, then inspect the panel again. Keep a short note of what changed and whether the welfare status improved. This method is more reliable than adding random objects whenever an animal looks unhappy.

Using blueprints and Workshop creations safely

Ready-to-place blueprints and Frontier Workshop community creations can speed up construction. They are starting points, not welfare certificates. A blueprint may have been built for another species, another enclosure type or a different layout, and the official material does not say that downloaded designs automatically adapt to a new animal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Place the blueprint in an appropriate location and confirm that its enclosure type matches the species.
  2. Read the species information before accepting the design as complete.
  3. Inspect usable ground, water or flight volume, vegetation, shelter and behaviour-supporting structures.
  4. Watch the animals and open the welfare information.
  5. Resize, remove or add pieces until the current game reports a suitable habitat.

Saving your own verified modules can create a dependable personal library, but record the species and version context so you know when a future update requires another check.

Common design failures and practical fixes

What you notice What to investigate Useful response
The enclosure looks spacious, but welfare is poor. Usable space may be divided by terrain, water, structures or paths, or the habitat type may be wrong. Return to the species information, simplify the interior, and inspect the welfare panel after restoring connected usable space.
Animals ignore an attractive structure. The structure may be unreachable, placed in an unsuitable area or not relevant to that species’ documented behaviours. Move it into an accessible location, observe again, and do not assume the object counts as enrichment merely because it is present.
Vegetation fills the habitat but animals still struggle. Plants may be blocking movement or failing to provide the interaction the species needs. Use the foliage brush selectively, preserve movement routes, and verify the specific vegetation requirement in the species information.
Aviary birds have a large footprint but little effective flight space. Supports, barriers or interior pieces may obstruct the three-dimensional volume. Rework the vertical layout and dynamic mesh cover, then observe flight and recheck welfare.
A downloaded blueprint produces unexpected welfare warnings. The blueprint may target another species, enclosure type or version. Treat it as a shell, verify every current requirement, and modify it before admitting guests.
An animal’s appearance or sound changes and you cannot identify the cause. Mood cues are signals to investigate, not a published one-to-one diagnosis. Read the welfare panel, change one relevant variable, and observe the result instead of assigning a fixed meaning to the cue.

A simple comparison framework for competing layouts

When two designs both appear attractive, compare them in this order:

  1. Enclosure fit: Is each design built for the correct terrestrial, aviary, freshwater or saltwater context?
  2. Species fit: Does the layout satisfy the selected animal’s current information rather than a generic template?
  3. Behaviour support: Can animals reach and use the terrain, vegetation and structures associated with their documented behaviours?
  4. Feedback clarity: Can you observe the animals and access welfare information easily enough to diagnose changes?
  5. Revision cost: Which layout can be changed without destroying the usable habitat or guest circulation?

This is a practical decision framework, not an official scoring system. A smaller, clearer habitat that you can monitor and revise is often a better starting point than a complex build whose interior function is difficult to verify.

What is and is not established at launch

The official PlayStation listing gives October 13, 2026 as the PS5 release date, and Frontier’s announcement feed gives the same launch date. The Xbox listing describes the same broad direction of custom habitats and building tools. These materials establish the species-first approach, terrestrial, aquarium and aviary contexts, terrain and foliage tools, pathing, scaling, piece-by-piece construction, blueprints and Workshop creations.

They do not establish a complete launch-version table of numerical habitat area, terrain mix, foliage, temperature, shelter or enrichment requirements for every species. The original game’s older building guidance should not be treated as verified Planet Zoo 2 launch guidance. For a species-specific build, use the current game’s information and welfare feedback, and recheck after updates that change animals or building systems.

Before opening a habitat: a welfare checklist

  • Selected the species and confirmed whether it belongs in a terrestrial habitat, aviary, freshwater aquarium or saltwater aquarium.
  • Read the current in-game species information and noted its listed needs and behaviours.
  • Created usable movement space before adding decorative detail.
  • Used terrain and foliage deliberately, leaving routes to important areas.
  • Added shelter or cover only where the species information and welfare feedback support it.
  • Placed behaviour-supporting structures where the animals can reach and use them.
  • Built secure barriers; for aviaries, enclosed the full flight volume with barriers, support poles and dynamic mesh cover.
  • Positioned guest paths and viewing areas without compromising the animals’ functional space.
  • Observed appearance, sounds and interactions, then checked the welfare panel.
  • Verified every blueprint or Workshop creation instead of assuming it meets the selected species’ requirements.

The reliable formula is species information, functional space, behaviour support and repeated observation. Build for what the animal can do, read what the game reports, and revise until the habitat works as well as it looks.
