Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse Minecraft’s /fill command to remove a whole cuboid at once: specify two opposite corners, then choose air as the block to fill the area with. If you want removed blocks to drop items, use the destroy fill mode, checking the syntax for your edition and version first.
Clear an area with /fill
The general command is:
/fill <x1> <y1> <z1> <x2> <y2> <z2> air
Replace the two coordinate triplets with opposite corners of the area you want to clear. The command changes the cuboid between those endpoints; check both corners carefully before running it over a large area. Microsoft’s Bedrock /fill reference documents the command’s two required endpoints and describes it as filling all or part of a region with a specific block.

Make removed blocks drop items
Adding the destroy fill mode is the option to use when you want the command to destroy blocks with their drop behavior rather than simply replace the region with air. Exact argument order differs by edition and version.
Bedrock example
Microsoft’s Bedrock reference, dated February 11, 2025, gives this example for clearing the layer beneath the player in an 11-by-1-by-11 area while using destroy mode:

/fill ~-5 ~-1 ~-5 ~5 ~-1 ~5 air 0 destroy
The 0 before destroy is part of that documented Bedrock example. Do not copy it into Java syntax without checking the command format your game accepts.
Java syntax
Mojang’s Java Edition Snapshot 25w02a notes document this grammar: fill <from> <to> <block> [replace <filter>]? [strict|destroy|hollow|outline]?. That is snapshot documentation, not a guarantee that every installed release uses the same syntax. Use the in-game command suggestions or help for your version if the example is rejected.

Enable commands and check permissions
Commands are entered in chat with a leading slash. In Java single-player, commands can be enabled when creating a world or later through World Options. In Bedrock single-player, turn on Allow Cheats in Game settings. Mojang’s commands guide warns that enabling cheats permanently disables achievements for that Bedrock world, even if cheats are later turned off.
On a multiplayer world or server, you need sufficient permissions; if you are a guest, ask the owner or administrator. The Bedrock reference identifies the command as requiring cheats and the “Game Directors” permission level.

To reduce coordinate errors, Minecraft’s commands guide notes that Tab can complete coordinates for the block you are looking at when a command expects coordinates. Check the completed values and both endpoints before executing the command.
