There is no universally established slide count or required order. Build a concise deck around the evidence your target publisher asks for, then link to gameplay footage and a demo or playable build if available.
What a publisher needs to understand
A deck is an evaluation tool, not a promise that a particular template will secure a publishing deal. It should help a reviewer judge the game and its creative distinction, whether the project is demonstrable and production-ready, the team’s ability to execute, its commercial potential, and its fit with that publisher.
Those dimensions appear in different forms across the available guidance. The India Game Developer Conference’s Investor–Publisher Connect, for example, lists game/IP quality, development stage, commercial viability, team capability, partner alignment, and supporting materials as selection considerations. That is one program’s rubric, not a universal publisher scorecard. IGDC Investor–Publisher Connect
Keep the first impression easy to grasp. The GDC Vault listing for a 2012 session by Pete Smith of Sony XDev Studio Europe puts it succinctly: “A good idea told badly is a bad idea.” Treat that as advice about communicating the game, not a current policy for every publisher. Build the deck around the evidence
1. State the game proposition plainly
Identify the game, its genre or category, intended platforms, and the player-facing hook. Describe what players do and what makes the experience distinct using specific gameplay language. Avoid unsupported claims such as “completely original” or “the next big hit.” A reviewer should be able to picture the play before reaching the finer production details.
2. Show gameplay near the beginning
Link a short gameplay video, and include a demo or playable build when one exists. Label each accurately: distinguish current gameplay from a trailer, concept footage, prototype, vertical slice, or planned feature. Make links easy to find and test them before sending. IGDC recommends gameplay footage or a trailer and a playable build where available; Devolver Digital requests a gameplay video and says its deck should include a demo link. 3. Make the team and production state assessable
Name the key roles and explain relevant experience in terms that connect to this game’s needs. Show the current development stage, what is already working, what remains, and how the team plans to reach the next meaningful milestone. Evidence of execution matters more than a list of broad capabilities.
4. Explain the audience and commercial case
Define the intended audience and how the game is positioned for it. If you make comparisons or demand claims, support them with current, attributable evidence and explain why the comparison is relevant. The cited sources establish commercial potential as an evaluation dimension; they do not provide a standard market-size benchmark or forecasting formula. Present estimates as estimates, not certainty.
5. Connect the budget to a roadmap and a specific ask
State the amount of support requested, what it would fund, the milestones it enables, and the estimated release timing. Be explicit about what you want the publisher to contribute, rather than assuming that “publishing support” means the same thing to every partner. Devolver’s live submission form asks for requested funds and an estimated release date, and says its deck should include a financial roadmap and what the developer wants from a publisher. Use a repeatable preparation sequence
- Write the one-sentence game description. Include the player activity, the distinctive hook, and the intended platform or audience where relevant.
- Gather proof of the experience. Prepare a gameplay video and, if available, a demo or build. Label the development state honestly and confirm that the links work.
- Document delivery readiness. Summarize team roles, relevant experience, current build status, remaining work, and the production milestones needed to reach release.
- Make the commercial reasoning legible. Describe the audience and positioning; attribute any comparisons or demand evidence and separate evidence from forecasts.
- Build the financial roadmap and ask. Connect the requested funding and publisher support to costs, milestones, and timing.
- Check the target partner’s current criteria. Adapt the deck and submission to the publisher’s stated materials, platforms, territories, development stage, release window, and submission route.
This is a practical sequence, not a required slide order. Publisher education sessions and program criteria support the underlying evaluation themes, but they do not establish a mandatory number of slides or a universal template. GDC Vault: 2021 publisher-pitch panel

Tailor the submission to the publisher
Before sending, compare the actual partner’s current focus and requirements against your game and plan. Check its content and platform interests, preferred development stage, requested materials, submission route, release timing, territory or market expectations, and services. Alignment is an evaluation consideration, but no single publisher is right for an unspecified project.
Requirements can be specific and can change. As checked on October 4, 2026, Devolver Digital’s live form says it considers pitches aiming to release next year and beyond. That is Devolver’s stated release-window policy, not an industry-wide rule. The same form requests a quick pitch, gameplay video, pitch-deck link, requested funds, estimated release date, and specified information in the deck. Recheck the form before submitting. Make the first review easy
August Brown of Armor Games Studios, in the GDC 2022 session overview “Don’t Make My Job Easy: Effectively Pitching to Publishers,” notes that budgets and vertical slices matter, but that many pitches are dismissed before a scout gets that far. The useful lesson is to make the game understandable and its demo easy to reach early—not to infer a rejection rate or assume reviewers follow one universal process. GDC Vault: August Brown’s publisher-pitch session
Quick Recap
- Put the game hook and gameplay evidence where a reviewer can find them quickly.
- Use working, clearly labeled links to footage and any available playable version.
- Make the team, production stage, budget logic, milestones, and ask understandable without relying on unstated assumptions.
- Remove claims that cannot be supported, and tailor the package to the partner’s current instructions.
