How to Diagnose and Fix a PlayStation 1 SCPH-1002 Power-Supply Problem

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before repairing or replacing a PlayStation 1 SCPH-1002 power supply, confirm the console’s PSU label, mains-voltage rating, board revision and connector. Early SCPH-1002 consoles are associated with a seven-pin PSU and PAL-region hardware, but the label on your individual unit is what matters. Don’t repeatedly power a console that buzzes, smells burned or blows fuses, and never bridge a fuse. If you are not trained to work on mains-connected switch-mode supplies, use a compatible replacement or a repair service.

Confirm the exact console and power supply

“SCPH-1002” identifies a model family, not every detail needed to choose a replacement or interpret a schematic. Before opening the console, record or photograph:

  • The console model label and its mains-voltage marking.
  • The PSU board’s part number and manufacturer, if visible.
  • The number of pins in the PSU-to-motherboard connector.
  • The fuse marking and any signs of prior repair or modification.

Early units are associated with a seven-pin PSU arrangement, while later PlayStation 1 revisions commonly use five-pin arrangements. Verify the connector on your actual board; shell shape alone does not establish compatibility. A later five-pin PSU is not a safe substitute just because it fits the case. Check the board revision and schematic using the SCPH-100-series service manual and its service-manual index.

SCPH-1002 is associated with the early PAL/European family, whose units may be marked for approximately 220–240 V mains. Do not assume that voltage: read the marking on the actual PSU before connecting it. A 220–240 V supply connected to ordinary U.S. 120 V mains may not operate correctly; a U.S. or Japanese unit connected to 220–240 V without a suitable design or conversion can be damaged. The service documentation and an owner’s voltage discussion reinforce why the unit’s own label must govern.

Use the symptom to narrow the fault

Symptom Areas to investigate
No LED, sound or response Outlet, cord, switch, fuse, PSU primary circuit, connector or motherboard short.
Fuse opens immediately Possible short in the PSU primary side, switching device, rectifier, capacitor or a downstream load. Find the cause before fitting another fuse.
Buzz, chirp or intermittent reset Possible cracked solder joints, unstable regulation, aging components or a load overloading the PSU.
LED on, but no audio or video The LED does not prove every rail is healthy. Check PSU operation under load, motherboard regulation and video circuitry.
Controller ports or memory cards fail Investigate the relevant motherboard supply, fuses and protection components, as well as the connector.
Console powers on, but disc drive fails Investigate the drive, motor, laser-driver or motherboard circuitry; a functioning LED alone does not diagnose the PSU.
PSU appears to work disconnected but fails when connected A weak or unstable PSU and a shorted or overloaded motherboard load are both possible. An unloaded reading is not conclusive.
Connected to the wrong mains voltage Stop using it. The PSU and motherboard may both need inspection for damage.

Service documentation describes supply sections including an approximately 8 V rail feeding regulation circuitry and a 3.5 V supply serving portions of the console and controller circuitry. These are circuit-rail descriptions, not a universal connector pinout. Use the schematic for the specific board before interpreting measurements (PlayStation service manual).

Know which checks are safe to do

With the console unplugged

  1. Disconnect the console from mains. Do not work inside it while it is plugged in.
  2. Check the wall outlet with another known-good device, then inspect the AC cord and plug for damage.
  3. Check that the power switch moves normally and look through the case vents for liquid, debris or burn damage.
  4. If the console buzzes, smells burned or has blown a fuse, stop powering it. Repeated attempts can worsen damage.
  5. If you open the case, photograph the PSU, wiring and connector orientation before removing anything.

Live measurements require relevant training

The PSU is a mains-connected switch-mode circuit. Its primary side can expose you to lethal voltage, including after disconnection because capacitors may retain charge. Do not probe the primary side or attempt a live test unless you are trained and equipped for mains electronics. If a test requires primary-side measurement and you lack that experience, stop and use a qualified repairer.

For qualified repairers, use insulated probes, prevent slips and consult the schematic for the exact PSU board. Measure only documented secondary-side test points, with the correct reference point, polarity and expected tolerance. The service manual’s rail descriptions are not permission to guess connector pins; do not use an unverified online pinout.

Inspect the PSU and test its fuse

With the console unplugged, remove the PSU only if you can do so safely. Inspect the mains input connector, fuse, transformer, switching transistor or FET, diodes, resistors, electrolytic capacitors, board tracks and connector pins. Look for scorching, heat damage, leaking or bulging capacitors and dull, cracked or ring-shaped solder joints. A capacitor can fail without visible swelling.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The service material identifies vibration-related dry joints around the capacitor, mains input connector and switching FET as recurring failure possibilities; it also describes fuse and transformer-continuity checks. These are diagnostic leads, not proof that a particular component is faulty. See the searchable service-manual text and SCPH-1002 power-service document.

  1. Unplug the console and leave it disconnected. Do not open or touch the primary circuit if you are not trained to handle it.
  2. With a multimeter set to continuity or resistance, test the removed or safely accessible fuse according to the meter and board layout. An open fuse indicates a fault to investigate; it does not identify the cause.
  3. If the fuse is open, inspect for a shorted switching device, rectifier diode, damaged resistor, failed capacitor or downstream short before replacing it.
  4. Use only a fuse with the same specified type, rating and time/current characteristics shown for that board. Never substitute foil, wire, a higher-rated fuse or an improvised resettable fuse.

In-circuit resistance readings can be misleading because other connected components create parallel paths. If you cannot interpret the reading or safely isolate the component, stop rather than replacing parts by guesswork.

Choose a repair path for the original PSU

Reflow a confirmed cracked joint

If the fuse is intact, the board is not visibly damaged and a cracked joint is visible around a high-stress component, reflowing that joint may address an intermittent fault. Use fresh flux and appropriate soldering technique. Avoid indiscriminately reheating the whole board or applying excessive heat.

Replace a failed component only from the correct schematic

Possible faults include electrolytic capacitors, the switching transistor or FET, startup or fusible resistors, rectifier and secondary-side diodes, and open inductors or ferrite components. Use the component designators, ratings and parts list for the exact board revision; the fifth-edition SCPH-100 service manual and the fourth-edition manual cover schematics and parts information for SCPH-100-series revisions. Replacing capacitors alone is not a diagnosis and may leave a failed semiconductor, startup component, solder joint or downstream short untouched.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Replace the complete PSU when board damage is extensive

A charred board, lifted tracks, extensive primary-side damage or a fuse that opens again are good reasons to stop component-level repair. A tested, compatible complete PSU can be a more direct restoration, but you must still match the input voltage, connector and board revision.

Check output without guessing at a pinout

A supply can show a plausible voltage unloaded and still collapse when connected to the motherboard. Conversely, a motherboard fault can overload a healthy PSU. Qualified repairers should compare documented secondary-side test points and readings with the schematic for their board revision, rather than relying on a generic connector diagram. Test under load only when the service procedure and equipment make that safe.

The service material references 8 V and 3.5 V circuit supplies, but does not make those descriptions a universal pin-by-pin output chart. Identify the measurement point, polarity, meter reference and expected tolerance directly from the applicable schematic. Do not publish or follow a guessed pinout.

Choose a compatible replacement or repair service

Option When it may fit Checks and trade-offs
Tested original seven-pin PSU You want an original-style replacement and have confirmed a matching board, connector and voltage. Condition matters because a replacement may also be aged. A European listing for a tested Nichicon seven-pin SCPH-1002 PSU is at Konzolüzlet; check current stock, shipping and regional suitability.
Modern internal replacement You prioritize a newer design over an original PSU. Robot Retro advertises a USB-C replacement for fat PS1 systems, including five- and seven-pin versions. Verify your exact revision, installation instructions, input arrangement, grounding and compatibility with installed modifications at the product page.
External-adapter replacement You accept an external power brick and a less original appearance. Stone Age Gamer describes RePSX as supporting five- and seven-pin systems and using a 12 V AC/DC adapter. Confirm the required adapter specification, whether it is included, and console compatibility at the RePSX listing.
Professional repair You lack live-mains experience, the primary side is damaged, or the fuse repeatedly opens. Ask about diagnosis, shipping, queue time and repair approval before sending the console. RetroSix US lists a PS1 repair service; its price and availability can change.

Before buying, verify input voltage, five- versus seven-pin connector, exact SCPH revision, whether an external adapter is included, warranty or testing, and compatibility with modifications such as xStation, MemCard Pro or HDMI. Compare total cost, including shipping and import fees, rather than just the listed part price. Avoid generic “PS1 adapters” unless they are explicitly specified as a compatible internal PSU replacement or a complete, correctly specified external system.

If the PSU is not the fault

If documented PSU outputs are correct under the relevant load but the console still malfunctions, investigate the rest of the power path before buying another supply. Service material identifies separate fuses and protection components associated with 3.5 V and 8 V-related circuits, controller ports, memory cards and regulator sections. Depending on the symptom, check:

  • The PSU connector for loose or heat-damaged pins and cracked motherboard solder joints.
  • The power switch contacts, motherboard fuses, regulators and diodes for the affected circuit.
  • Controller-port or memory-card protection components if those functions fail.
  • The CD-drive motor, laser-driver and related motherboard circuitry if the console powers up but does not read or spin discs.
  • Audio/video circuitry if the console runs but has no picture or sound.

A correct PSU reading at one point does not rule out a fault elsewhere, and an LED is not a full power test.
