Top 5 Mechanical Keyboards for PS5: A Practical Buying Guide

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

PS5 supports USB and Bluetooth keyboards at the system level, but that does not guarantee every keyboard will connect—or that a particular game will accept keyboard input. For the simplest test, start with a wired USB connection; for a cable-free gaming setup, a 2.4GHz receiver is generally a better first choice than Bluetooth. The best pick depends on your preferred layout, key feel, noise tolerance and whether you will also use it with a PC.

These five options cover premium gaming, low-profile and compact layouts, plus typing-focused alternatives. SteelSeries has the clearest manufacturer-level PlayStation positioning among them; the other models should be treated as candidates to verify in your preferred connection mode before buying.

Quick comparison

Keyboard Layout and profile Connection modes Best for PS5 confidence Main drawback
SteelSeries Apex Pro TKL Wireless (2023) TKL; standard-height gaming layout USB, 2.4GHz wireless, Bluetooth Premium all-around gaming High: SteelSeries lists its Apex line as PlayStation-compatible; confirm features and modes for the exact model Premium features may require PC software to configure
Logitech G915 X LIGHTSPEED TKL TKL; low-profile, about 3.2 mm total key travel in Logitech’s specifications USB, 2.4GHz receiver, Bluetooth 5.0 Low-profile wireless gaming Medium: connection options are documented, but blanket PS5 compatibility is not established Shorter travel will not suit everyone
SteelSeries Apex Pro Mini Wireless 60%; compact, standard-height gaming layout Wireless modes and USB; check the exact configuration Small desks and maximum mouse room High: SteelSeries lists its Apex line as PlayStation-compatible; validate the exact model and connection No dedicated arrow keys or function row
Keychron K2 Max 75%; retains arrow keys and function row Wired, 2.4GHz and Bluetooth are characteristic of the Max-series offering; confirm the selected configuration Typing and enthusiast customization Unverified: exact PS5 behavior is not confirmed by a first-party compatibility statement May require connection-mode troubleshooting
NuPhy Air75 V2 75%; slim, low-profile USB, 2.4GHz and Bluetooth; test each mode Portable, multi-device use Unverified: no authoritative first-party PS5 confirmation established Less certainty than a PlayStation-positioned model

“Confidence” describes the strength of the available compatibility evidence, not a guarantee that every key or game will work. Sony warns that some devices may appear during Bluetooth pairing even when they are not compatible. Sony’s PS5 keyboard and mouse guidance is the place to start for console setup; game support must be checked separately.

How to choose a keyboard for PS5

Choose by connection, not just by the word wireless

  • USB: The simplest way to test an unfamiliar keyboard. It avoids charging and receiver pairing, but the cable may be inconvenient from a couch.
  • 2.4GHz receiver: A practical cable-free gaming option. The console must recognize the receiver, and advanced settings may still need a computer. Check whether the receiver is included and whether your console-side USB port needs an adapter.
  • Bluetooth: Convenient for typing or sharing a keyboard with other devices, but pairing and reconnection are less predictable. A device appearing in the Bluetooth list does not prove it will work.

When troubleshooting, use USB first. For a wireless setup, test the receiver before relying on Bluetooth for gameplay. A keyboard’s connection modes do not guarantee identical behavior in every mode.

Pick a layout you can live with

  • TKL: Drops the number pad while keeping a familiar arrangement. It is a strong gaming compromise.
  • 75%: Keeps arrow keys and the function row in a smaller footprint. It suits typing, menus and mixed use.
  • 60%: Frees the most mouse space, but commonly moves arrows, navigation and function keys onto shortcuts. That can be awkward for chat, browsing and text entry.
  • Full-size: Useful if you need a number pad, but occupies the most space; none of this shortlist is full-size.

Match switch feel and sound to the room

  • Linear switches feel smooth through a press; tactile switches add a noticeable bump; clicky switches add audible feedback. These are preferences, not objective speed rankings.
  • Low-profile switches have shorter travel and a more laptop-like feel. Standard-height switches feel more like conventional mechanical boards.
  • In a shared room or on an open microphone, clicky switches are the riskiest choice. Switch type, bottoming out, keycaps and case resonance all affect the sound others hear.

Do not pay extra for features the PS5 cannot configure

Basic key input is the important requirement. Adjustable actuation, remapping, macros, OLED displays and detailed RGB profiles often depend on manufacturer software or onboard memory configured from a computer. Media keys, dials and function-layer shortcuts may not behave as they do on a PC. Check the exact model’s software requirements before paying a premium for those features.

The five keyboards

1. SteelSeries Apex Pro TKL Wireless (2023): best overall

The TKL layout keeps the familiar gaming keys while leaving more room than a full-size board. SteelSeries lists its Apex gaming keyboard line as compatible with PlayStation, including PS5. The model page describes wireless operation and software-based customization; those details do not mean every custom actuation or key-binding feature can be configured on the console. SteelSeries’ PlayStation-filtered Apex keyboard listings and the Apex Pro 2023 product information are useful for checking the particular version.

  • Best for: Players who want a conventional gaming layout and also use a PC.
  • Think twice if: You only need occasional chat or do not want to configure features on a computer.

2. Logitech G915 X LIGHTSPEED TKL: best low-profile option

This TKL board is for players who prefer shallow, laptop-like key travel over a taller mechanical feel. Logitech lists USB, a wireless receiver and Bluetooth 5.0 among its connection options, and specifies about 3.2 mm total key travel. Those specifications establish connection choices, not a blanket Sony compatibility certification. Start with USB on PS5, then test the receiver; treat Bluetooth as a convenience mode rather than an assumed gaming mode. See Logitech’s G915 X LIGHTSPEED TKL specifications.

  • DOUBLESHOT ABS KEYCAPS: Using a doubleshot molding process to ensure the labeling never wears off while having extra-thick walls to withstand intense gaming
  • Best for: A mixed PS5/PC setup and anyone who likes low-profile keys.
  • Think twice if: You want deep travel, traditional mechanical feel or assured PS5 behavior across wireless modes.

3. SteelSeries Apex Pro Mini Wireless: best compact option

A 60% layout gives mouse-heavy play more room, and SteelSeries’ PlayStation positioning for the Apex line makes this a stronger compatibility prospect than an unverified compact board. The trade-off is real: arrow keys, navigation and the function row are not dedicated keys. Learn the model’s function-layer shortcuts before choosing it for frequent text entry. Software features such as adjustable actuation should be configured on a computer if the manufacturer requires it; do not assume the PS5 can change them. Check the Apex Pro product information for model details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Best for: Small desks, competitive shooters and users already comfortable with compact layouts.
  • Think twice if: You rely on dedicated arrows, frequent typing or a familiar plug-and-play layout.

4. Keychron K2 Max: best typing-oriented choice

The 75% layout is more practical for mixed typing and gaming than a 60% board because it retains arrow keys and a function row. Keychron’s product listing describes the K2 Max; verify the exact switch, ANSI or ISO layout, and included receiver for the configuration you plan to buy. The available first-party information does not establish PS5 compatibility for every K2 Max version, so regard it as a promising candidate rather than a guaranteed console choice. Test USB first, then the receiver and Bluetooth separately.

  • Best for: People who type as much as they play and want a more customizable mechanical keyboard.
  • Think twice if: You require manufacturer-stated PlayStation support or do not want to troubleshoot.

5. NuPhy Air75 V2: best slim, portable option

This low-profile 75% candidate keeps the arrow keys and function row while remaining compact for a shared desk or multi-device household. Its product page is the right place to confirm the selected version and connection details, but the available first-party evidence does not confirm PS5 compatibility. Test USB wired, 2.4GHz receiver and Bluetooth independently; a successful connection on one mode does not establish that the others work.

Check your game before buying

PS5 system recognition and game support are separate. Sony says developers decide whether their games support keyboard input. A title may accept a keyboard for text entry or menus but not gameplay; keyboard and mouse support can also differ. Updates and competitive matchmaking policies are title-specific, so check the current PS5 version’s control settings or official support information for the game you intend to play. No keyboard setting on the console can force a game to accept unsupported input. Sony’s PS5 FAQ explains the distinction between console keyboard support and game-level implementation.

Connect a keyboard to PS5

USB wired connection

  1. Turn on the PS5 and connect the keyboard directly to a console USB port.
  2. Open Settings → Accessories → Other Accessories and check whether the keyboard is detected.
  3. Test text entry in a search or message field, then test the intended game separately.
  4. Use the keyboard settings in this menu to adjust language, key-repeat delay and key-repeat rate where available.

Bluetooth pairing

  1. Put the keyboard into its Bluetooth pairing mode and disconnect it from other devices if needed.
  2. On the PS5, open Settings → Accessories → General → Bluetooth Accessories.
  3. Select the keyboard from the discovered-device list and confirm it appears among registered accessories.
  4. If it does not reconnect later, select it in registered accessories and choose Connect.

2.4GHz receiver

  1. Insert the keyboard’s receiver directly into a PS5 USB port.
  2. Turn on the keyboard and choose its receiver or 2.4GHz mode; wait for the keyboard and receiver to pair.
  3. Test text entry and the target game. If the PS5 does not recognize it, try USB wired mode.
  4. If the keyboard works on a PC but not on PS5, updating the keyboard and receiver firmware with the manufacturer’s PC software is a troubleshooting step, not a stated Sony requirement.

Sony’s PS5 keyboard support page covers connection paths and keyboard settings. Follow the exact menu labels shown on your console if a system software update changes the interface.

Troubleshoot common problems

The keyboard appears in Bluetooth devices but will not connect

Sony cautions that an incompatible device can appear in the pairing list. First disconnect the keyboard from other devices, charge it if needed, and confirm it is in the correct pairing mode. Then power-cycle it, remove its PS5 registration and pair again. If it still fails, test USB, try another console USB port, and consider a firmware update using the manufacturer’s PC software.

  • Built to Outlast Daily Gaming - Rated for 50 million keystrokes with double-shot keycaps that resist fading, so the board holds up to years of heavy use.
  • Full Anti-Ghosting for Fast-Paced Games - 104 keys register accurately even during rapid multi-key combos, so your inputs land exactly when you press them.
  • Optional Software for Power Users - Everyday use needs zero software, but for advanced RGB effects and deeper macro profiles, companion software is available whenever you want to go further.

It connects but does nothing in a game

Test the keyboard in a PS5 text field. If it works there but not in the game, check the game’s own input settings and confirm keyboard support for its PS5 version. It may support only menus or chat, or not support keyboards at all.

The receiver fails but USB works

Check that the keyboard is in receiver mode and the dongle is fully inserted. Receiver firmware, interference, a stored device profile or how the receiver is recognized can all affect operation. Use USB as the fallback rather than assuming that a keyboard’s receiver will work just because it works on a computer.

Some keys, lighting or extra controls do not work

Basic keys may function while media controls, macro keys, RGB changes, an OLED screen or vendor-specific remapping do not. A stored lighting profile may remain active, but the PS5 does not provide the manufacturer’s PC configuration software. On a 60% layout, confirm the function-layer shortcuts for arrows and navigation.

The keyboard works but the mouse does not

Games can implement keyboard and mouse support separately. Test each device independently and check the game’s own input guidance rather than assuming that keyboard recognition proves mouse support.

Input feels delayed

Compare wired and receiver modes with Bluetooth, check battery and power-saving behavior, and see whether the delay also occurs in text entry. Wireless interference, wake-from-sleep behavior and game-specific settings can affect the experience. Use the connection that behaves most reliably in your setup rather than relying on an unsupported latency number.

Which one should you choose?

  • Best overall premium layout: SteelSeries Apex Pro TKL Wireless (2023).
  • Best compact choice: SteelSeries Apex Pro Mini Wireless, if you are comfortable with 60% shortcuts.
  • Best low-profile gaming option: Logitech G915 X LIGHTSPEED TKL, with USB as the first PS5 test.
  • Best typing-oriented candidate: Keychron K2 Max, if you are willing to verify the exact version and connection mode.
  • Best slim portable candidate: NuPhy Air75 V2, if you can test each connection mode and accept unconfirmed PS5 behavior.

If console reliability matters more than wireless convenience or customization, a basic wired USB mechanical keyboard with a clear return policy is a sensible fallback. Before ordering any model, confirm its exact version and layout, included receiver, intended game’s keyboard support, PC-software requirements and return terms.
