To identify whether packets are being lost—and where—you need to compare FFmpeg’s timeline with YouTube’s stream-health messages, your encoder and local recording, and host or network measurements.
What FFmpeg logs can—and cannot—tell you
FFmpeg’s log is an application-level view of the publishing process. Its -stats output reports encoding progress; it does not, by itself, count lost IP packets or identify where loss occurred. A low output rate, a warning, a timeout, or viewer buffering is not proof of packet loss on a particular network segment.
FFmpeg documents RTMP as a protocol carried over TCP/IP. To investigate packet loss directly, use operating-system interface and TCP counters or a packet capture during the event. Those measurements describe only the host, path, and time window they observe; they do not automatically establish what happened elsewhere along the route.
Capture a useful, safe FFmpeg log
FFmpeg writes its default log output to stderr. For a reproduction, save stderr and retain the exact command with the stream key removed or replaced before sharing. Increase verbosity to verbose; if the capture does not show enough context, try debug. The -report option writes the command line and log output to a timestamped report and implies debug verbosity. Treat that report as sensitive because it can contain command details and credentials.

-c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv 'rtmps://SERVER/APP/STREAM_KEY' 2>ffmpeg-live.log
This is an example of log capture and RTMPS output syntax, not a universal encoding recipe. Replace the input and output locally; never publish a live stream key. Global options such as the log level belong before the inputs and outputs they affect. Avoid debug verbosity for an entire event unless you can manage log volume and protect the resulting files.
Build a timeline before diagnosing the cause
Record when YouTube first reports a health change, when FFmpeg emits a warning, error, or apparent stall, and what the encoder and local recording show at those times. Timing and correlation are more useful than searching for an isolated phrase. FFmpeg’s documentation defines logging levels and progress output, but there is no universal RTMP log signature that proves packet loss across builds and failure modes.
- Note encoder CPU load and any encoder errors alongside FFmpeg messages.
- Check whether the local preview or archive changes quality or stops at the same time.
- Compare each event with the Live Control Room stream-health timeline.
Cross-check YouTube and the local pipeline
YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the encoder’s direct output, source quality, encoder errors, CPU load, and local archive. If those look healthy while Live Control Room reports stream trouble, investigate the outbound connection and gather network evidence. This makes the connection a sensible next area to examine; it does not prove that your ISP is responsible.

Live Control Room provides its own stream-health status and specific messages. Treat it as a separate observation from FFmpeg: compare their timing rather than assuming either view alone identifies the fault. A local archive that is also damaged points you toward source or encoding issues; a healthy local output narrows the investigation but does not establish where an outbound problem lies.

Check upload capacity and stream settings
YouTube’s guidance is direct: “Have enough bandwidth: The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.” YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom. Count both primary and backup stream bitrates in the total, and remember that upload bandwidth may be lower than download bandwidth. Headroom is an operational recommendation, not a guarantee against congestion or packet loss.
Use YouTube’s current bitrate recommendations for your codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than borrowing a target from a different configuration. Its encoder settings guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 and AV1, up to 60 fps, CBR, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds). Recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so check the current settings before an event.

Test the connection path and collect direct evidence
Run an outbound speed test under conditions representative of the stream, then compare the result with the aggregate bitrate, including any backup output. A speed test describes its test conditions; it cannot prove that the path will remain clear under the full event load.
If available, compare wired Ethernet with Wi-Fi as a controlled check of the local connection. That comparison can help isolate a local-path difference, but it is not a packet-loss measurement and cannot by itself identify whether a fault is in the LAN, ISP, route, or YouTube ingestion. For direct evidence, collect host interface counters and TCP statistics or capture packets during the reproduction. Record the measurement point and time window.
Interpret common symptoms carefully
FFmpeg progress slows or output rate falls
This shows a change in FFmpeg’s processing or output progress, not a packet-loss count. Check encoder load, local output, and the timing of YouTube health messages before investigating the connection.

YouTube reports dropped frames or stream trouble
“Dropped frames” does not necessarily mean network packets were lost. Identify which stage reported the drop, compare the local preview and archive, and check available upload capacity against total stream bitrate.
Connection times out
A timeout is a connection failure, not a direct packet-loss reading. Verify the output URL, port, protocol, encoder configuration, and outbound connection; compare the event with YouTube’s health status and host network evidence.
RTMP server reports an invalid SSL certificate
YouTube lists this as a connection setup or SSL configuration issue, not proof that packets were lost. Confirm that the URL is actually RTMPS and that the encoder supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts data to and through Google’s servers.
