Key takeaways
- Windows 11 has no single universal FPS-counter switch; the visible counter usually belongs to an overlay provider.
- Xbox Game Bar is the first Windows-native place to check: press Win+G, then close or unpin the Performance widget.
- NVIDIA, AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition, Steam, third-party OSD tools, and laptop utilities can display FPS independently.
- FPS shown with GPU, CPU, latency, temperatures, or frametime is usually a performance HUD rather than a basic game setting.
- An FPS counter visible only inside Microsoft Edge may be DevTools Frame Rendering Stats.
Which program is showing the FPS counter?
The program displaying the counter—not Windows 11 itself—is the setting you need to change. Look at where the counter appears, what information it shows, and which keyboard shortcuts respond.

| Xbox Game Bar | Windows desktop or games | Performance information, including FPS and system metrics | Win+G, then close or unpin the Performance widget |
| NVIDIA overlay | Usually games or other accelerated applications | FPS and other performance statistics | Alt+R, or Alt+Z for overlay controls |
| AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition | Usually games or other accelerated applications | FPS and performance metrics | Ctrl+Shift+O, or AMD Software’s Performance/Metrics settings |
| Steam | Steam games | Often an FPS counter by itself | Steam > Settings > In Game |
| Third-party OSD utility | Games and sometimes the desktop | FPS, GPU, CPU, temperatures, frametime, or latency | Disable OSD, On-Screen Display, or FPS monitoring |
| Microsoft Edge DevTools | Only inside an Edge window | Frame rendering statistics | DevTools > Rendering > clear Frame Rendering Stats |
Because multiple overlays can be installed on the same PC, disable one provider at a time. That approach identifies the owner without changing unrelated Windows or graphics settings. The troubleshooting cases collected by Microsoft also show that a manufacturer utility, such as Lenovo Vantage, can be responsible when the familiar gaming overlays are disabled. Microsoft’s support discussion about locating an unwanted FPS counter documents that type of case.

How do I turn off the FPS counter in Windows 11?
Start with Xbox Game Bar, then check the graphics-vendor overlay, Steam, third-party monitoring software, and manufacturer utilities in that order.
1. Close or unpin the Xbox Game Bar Performance widget
- Press Win+G to open Xbox Game Bar.
- Find the Performance widget.
- If the widget is pinned, click its pin control to unpin it.
- Close the widget or close Xbox Game Bar.
A pinned Performance widget can remain visible over other windows even after you stop actively using Game Bar. Microsoft support discussions identify Win+G and the Performance widget’s pin control as the first Windows-native checks for an unwanted performance overlay. See Microsoft’s guidance for removing a system monitoring overlay.
2. Disable the NVIDIA performance display
If the counter responds to NVIDIA’s controls, press Alt+R to toggle the performance display. You can also press Alt+Z and open the NVIDIA overlay’s HUD-layout or performance controls, then turn the display off.
Alt+R and Alt+Z are useful diagnostic clues, but NVIDIA shortcuts can be customized or vary by software version. If neither shortcut works, open the NVIDIA app or GeForce Experience overlay settings and look for HUD, Performance, or Overlay controls. Microsoft’s FPS-counter troubleshooting discussion lists the NVIDIA overlay checks.
3. Disable the AMD metrics overlay
For AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition, press Ctrl+Shift+O to toggle the metrics overlay. If the shortcut does nothing, open AMD Software and disable the overlay through its Performance or Metrics controls.

AMD’s official documentation identifies frame rate as a performance metric: Frame Rate – Reported in frames per second (FPS).
AMD’s Monitor Performance Metrics documentation explains the metrics overlay. AMD shortcuts and labels can change with configuration or software updates, so the in-app settings are the fallback.
4. Turn off Steam’s in-game FPS counter
If the counter appears only in Steam games and usually shows FPS alone, open Steam and go to Settings > In Game. Turn off the in-game FPS counter.
Steam can display FPS independently of Xbox Game Bar and the graphics-vendor overlay. Disabling Steam’s counter therefore will not necessarily remove a HUD that also shows GPU, CPU, latency, temperatures, or frametime. Microsoft Community Hub’s Windows 11 discussion covers Steam and other independent FPS-counter sources.
5. Disable third-party OSD software
MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner Statistics Server, Fraps, and similar monitoring utilities can draw their own on-screen display. Open each relevant application and turn off On-Screen Display, OSD, or FPS monitoring.
A third-party OSD is especially likely when the overlay contains several hardware readings rather than FPS alone. If the counter returns after a reboot, inspect the utility’s startup behavior as well as its temporary overlay toggle.

7. Remove Frame Rendering Stats from Microsoft Edge
If the FPS counter appears only inside Microsoft Edge while you are developing or testing a page, it may be DevTools’ rendering diagnostic rather than a gaming overlay.
- Open Edge DevTools with F12 or Ctrl+Shift+I.
- Open the Rendering tool.
- Clear Frame Rendering Stats.
Because this display is scoped to the Edge window, closing or changing Game Bar, NVIDIA, AMD, or Steam settings may have no effect.
Why are FPS, GPU, CPU, or latency numbers showing in the corner?
FPS shown together with GPU, CPU, latency, temperatures, or frametime usually indicates a performance-monitoring HUD. FPS alone is more commonly a launcher setting, a game setting, or a simple overlay, although appearance varies by application.

The counter’s scope is another strong clue: a display across the desktop suggests Game Bar, a display limited to Steam games suggests Steam, a display limited to games with hardware metrics suggests a graphics-vendor or OSD utility, and a display limited to Edge suggests Frame Rendering Stats.
What should I do if the FPS counter is not from NVIDIA?
Check Xbox Game Bar first, then AMD Software, Steam, third-party OSD utilities, and manufacturer applications. NVIDIA is only one possible owner, and turning off NVIDIA’s overlay cannot remove a counter drawn by another program.
Use this quick diagnostic sequence:
- Note whether the counter is desktop-wide, game-only, Steam-game-only, or Edge-only.
- Press Win+G and close or unpin the Performance widget.
- Try Alt+R and inspect Alt+Z for NVIDIA controls.
- Try Ctrl+Shift+O and inspect AMD Performance/Metrics settings.
- Open Steam’s Settings > In Game page and disable its FPS counter.
- Inspect MSI Afterburner, RivaTuner Statistics Server, Fraps, and other OSD tools.
- Inspect laptop, motherboard, and startup utilities.
Do not begin by uninstalling graphics drivers or disabling every overlay. A provider-specific change is safer and makes it easier to determine which application owns the display.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why does the counter come back after I restart Windows 11?
A counter that returns after reboot is likely being enabled by a startup application, a vendor utility, or a persistent overlay preference rather than merely being temporarily pinned.
Review applications that launch with Windows, including graphics software, monitoring utilities, laptop utilities, and gaming tools. Disable the suspected application’s overlay or startup behavior, then restart Windows to verify the result. If several candidates exist, change one setting at a time so the cause remains clear.

What if none of these fixes removes the counter?
If the display remains after the common checks, identify its scope and visual style again, then inspect every application that can draw an on-screen display. Pay particular attention to startup utilities and manufacturer software, because those sources can operate independently of Windows Game Bar, NVIDIA, AMD, and Steam.
When the display appears only in Edge, revisit DevTools and the Rendering tool. When the display appears only in one game, inspect that game’s own graphics, accessibility, or performance settings before changing system-wide software.
