ServerDisabledNetworkProtocols is a comma-separated deny list. It names protocols the server must not use; it does not select the protocol written in the value.
LiteNetLibdisables LiteNetLib only.SteamNetworkingdisables SteamNetworking only.LiteNetLib, SteamNetworkingdisables both listed protocols.- An empty value enables both protocols.
The official server settings reference lists LiteNetLib and SteamNetworking as valid values. Do not write value="SteamNetworking" when your intention is to disable LiteNetLib: that value disables SteamNetworking instead.

Before you edit the XML
Confirm that you are administering a dedicated server
The workflow applies to a 7 Days to Die dedicated-server process reading an XML configuration file. A player hosting a listen-based local game does not expose this same server configuration workflow, so there is no equivalent in-game switch that applies this property. If you need to control the network protocol deny list, use a dedicated server and its XML configuration.
Identify the configuration file in use
The default file is commonly named serverconfig.xml, but a launch option can point the process to another XML file. A server started with an argument such as:

-configfile=path/to/your-server-config.xmlreads the file at that path. Editing a different copy produces no change even if its contents look correct. Record the exact file supplied to the running process before making the edit.

Decide whether you want one protocol or both disabled
Most requests to “disable LiteNetLib” mean that SteamNetworking should remain available. In that case, use only LiteNetLib in the value. Disable both only when you have a specific test or operational reason, because removing both options can prevent clients from finding a usable connection path.
Step-by-step: disable LiteNetLib only
- Stop the dedicated server. Shut down the server process cleanly and wait until it has stopped writing files. Editing while it is running can allow a save or shutdown routine to overwrite your change.
- Open the active XML file. Open the
serverconfig.xmlselected by your launch command, or the custom file passed with-configfile. Use a plain-text or code editor so the XML syntax is preserved. - Find the property. Search for
ServerDisabledNetworkProtocols. An existing entry may look like this:

<property name="ServerDisabledNetworkProtocols" value="LiteNetLib"/>- Save the file. Keep the property name, capitalization, quotation marks, and XML structure intact. Do not add explanatory text inside the tag.
- Restart with the same configuration. Launch the dedicated server using the same
-configfile=...argument, if one was used previously. The process must read the file you just saved. - Test a real connection. Have players connect using the platforms and network paths that matter to your installation. A successful server start confirms that the XML parsed; it does not by itself prove that every player can connect through the remaining protocol.
Correct values for common goals

The comma-separated form is the documented syntax. Keep the two names separated by a comma; the space after the comma in LiteNetLib, SteamNetworking is readable and accepted as part of the list format.
Disabling both protocols for a controlled test
If you deliberately need to test behavior with neither networking implementation available, set:

<property name="ServerDisabledNetworkProtocols" value="LiteNetLib, SteamNetworking"/>Restart the server after saving. This is not the normal way to provide connectivity: with both names denied, clients have no listed protocol left for the server to use. Restore LiteNetLib, SteamNetworking, or an empty value when the test is complete, then restart again.
How network conditions affect the choice
Disabling LiteNetLib is a protocol change, not a universal fix for connection problems. The official server reference specifically advises that dedicated servers should disable SteamNetworking when there is no NAT router between users and the server, or when port forwarding is set up correctly. That guidance describes a network topology, not a blanket instruction to disable LiteNetLib on every server.

Verify platform-specific behavior against the version installed on your server. The two protocol names alone do not establish that every platform supports every combination in the same way.

Troubleshooting after the change
The server behaves exactly as before
- Stop the process again and inspect the file it actually loads.
- Check the launch arguments for
-configfile=.... If that argument names a custom XML, edit that file rather than another copy. - Confirm the property name is exactly
ServerDisabledNetworkProtocolsand that the value is exactlyLiteNetLibfor a LiteNetLib-only disable. - Save, restart, and retest. A change in an unused XML file cannot affect the running server.
Players cannot connect after LiteNetLib is disabled
First verify the XML path and value, then check firewall rules, router port forwarding, NAT placement, and the address players use. Test with the actual player platforms rather than inferring support from the server’s successful startup. A timeout does not prove that LiteNetLib itself was defective; it only shows that the complete connection path failed under the new conditions.
Only some players fail
Compare the affected players’ platforms, network locations, and connection method with those of players who can join. Keep the deny-list change isolated while testing so that protocol behavior is not confused with a simultaneous firewall, router, or game-version change. If the installed version has platform-specific networking requirements, verify those requirements before choosing to deny another protocol.
The server will not start after editing
Stop it, reopen the XML, and check for accidental changes outside the property: unmatched quotation marks, a missing closing />, or characters inserted by a rich-text editor. Restore the last known-good copy if necessary, then reapply only the property edit in a plain-text editor.

You need to undo the change
Replace the value with the previous setting, an empty value to allow both protocols, or the other protocol name if that is the intended policy. Restart the server with the same configuration file and test again.
Frequently misunderstood points
Does writing “LiteNetLib” enable LiteNetLib?
No. The property is a deny list. Listing LiteNetLib prevents that protocol from being used; it does not select it.

Can this be changed from a normal hosted game?
The cited configuration workflow is for a dedicated server’s XML file. A listen-hosted local game does not expose the same administration path, so this setting is not a general in-game toggle.
Is disabling LiteNetLib always recommended?
No. The appropriate value depends on NAT, port forwarding, player platforms, discoverability, and observed connection behavior. The official guidance about disabling SteamNetworking under particular NAT and forwarding conditions should not be read as a universal instruction to disable LiteNetLib.
