How to Disable Quick Resume on Xbox Series X|S (Per Game or Once)

To disable Quick Resume for one game on Xbox Series X|S, highlight the game, press the controller’s Menu button (or open More options), choose Manage game and add-ons, open Quick Resume settings, and enable Disable Quick Resume. That title will launch fresh instead of restoring its suspended session. If you only want to clear the copy currently held in memory, remove it from the Quick Resume group instead; that is a one-time cleanup and does not change the game’s saved setting.

What disabling Quick Resume actually does

Quick Resume is a Series X|S feature built on Xbox Velocity Architecture. It keeps a game in a suspended state so you can leave and return to it without going through a full launch. The Quick Resume group shows which games are ready to resume and lets you start them from that suspended state.

The current dashboard also has a per-game control. When Disable Quick Resume is enabled for a title, Xbox stops retaining that title for Quick Resume and launches it fresh instead. The control applies to that game, not to every game installed on the console.

  • Disable Quick Resume: a persistent per-game preference. Future launches of that title start fresh.
  • Remove from Quick Resume: a one-time removal of the suspended copy that already exists. The game can enter Quick Resume again later unless you also disable it.

Disable Quick Resume for a game

Use this procedure when you never want a particular title to reopen from its suspended session.

  1. Open My games & apps, the Home screen, or your game library.
  2. Highlight the game you want to change. Do not launch it.
  3. Press the controller’s Menu button. Depending on the dashboard view, this may appear as More options.
  4. Select Manage game and add-ons.
  5. Open Quick Resume settings.
  6. Turn on Disable Quick Resume.

After the setting is enabled, that title always launches fresh. You may still see other games in the Quick Resume group because the preference is attached to the selected game only.

Alternative route from the Quick Resume group

If the game is already listed in Quick Resume, you can reach the same per-game control without first finding it in the full library:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the Quick Resume group.
  2. Highlight the target game.
  3. Press Menu or open More options.
  4. Choose Manage Quick Resume.
  5. Enable Disable Quick Resume.

Both routes change the title’s Quick Resume behavior. The wording and location can vary slightly between dashboard layouts, but look for the game-management entry and then the Quick Resume settings.

Remove a game from Quick Resume once

Choose removal when you want to discard the suspended session now but do not necessarily want to change the game’s future behavior.

  1. Open the Quick Resume group.
  2. Highlight the game whose suspended copy you want to clear.
  3. Press the controller’s Menu button, or open More options.
  4. Select the action that removes the game from the Quick Resume state.

The title disappears from the current Quick Resume list. This does not enable Disable Quick Resume; if the title remains eligible, launching and leaving it later can create a new suspended copy.

Per-game disable versus one-time removal

Action Scope Next launch How long it lasts Best use
Disable Quick Resume One selected game Fresh launch Retained for that title until changed Games that behave poorly after sitting idle or rely heavily on online connections
Remove from Quick Resume One currently suspended copy Fresh launch after the copy is removed One-time cleanup Clearing a stale session without changing the title’s ongoing setting

These commands can be used together. Removing the current copy clears what is suspended immediately; disabling Quick Resume prevents that title from being retained again.

Why disable Quick Resume for some games?

Quick Resume is designed for fast return to a game, but a suspended session is not the same as a clean launch. Xbox’s April 30, 2026 update specifically addressed player feedback about performance after long periods of inactivity and about games that depend heavily on online connections. A fresh launch can be preferable when a title’s network session, authentication state, or other online activity becomes stale while suspended.

Disabling the feature is most useful when you repeatedly encounter a problem that disappears after fully leaving and reopening the game. It also suits games for which you prefer a predictable startup sequence every time. You do not need to disable Quick Resume globally to make that choice; the setting is available per title.

When keeping Quick Resume enabled makes sense

For games that resume correctly, Quick Resume remains useful because it returns you to where you stopped without a complete startup. You can leave that behavior enabled for those titles and disable it only for games that need a fresh session.

How pinning affects Quick Resume

Xbox added the ability to pin games in Quick Resume in March 2022. The documented limit was up to two pinned games. A pinned title remains in Quick Resume until you manually remove it or the game requires a mandatory update. Pinning is separate from disabling:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A pin tells Xbox to retain a title in the Quick Resume group.
  • Disable Quick Resume tells Xbox to launch a title fresh rather than retain its suspended state.

If a game is pinned and you want it gone, remove it from the Quick Resume group manually. The March 2022 limit is a historical product detail and may not describe every later dashboard revision, so the number of pin slots shown on your console is the authority for your current interface.

What to check if the option is missing

You are looking at the wrong menu

The per-game switch is not the same command as closing a game. Highlight the title first, open Manage game and add-ons, and then look for Quick Resume settings. From the Quick Resume group, use Manage Quick Resume rather than a generic launch or close command.

You want to clear a suspended copy, not change the preference

If your goal is simply to stop the current resume, open the Quick Resume group and use its remove action. Removing the copy will not create a lasting per-game rule, so return to the settings path if you want every future launch to be fresh.

The title still appears elsewhere in the group

Quick Resume is a list of suspended games, not a list of games with the disable preference. A different title can remain there, and a pinned title can remain until manually removed or affected by a mandatory update. Select the exact game you want to change before opening its options.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The game was left idle for a long time

For a title that has been suspended through a long period of inactivity, remove the existing Quick Resume copy first. Then enable Disable Quick Resume if you want to avoid retaining another suspended session for that game.

Expected launch behavior after the change

With Disable Quick Resume enabled, the selected game no longer opens at the point where it was suspended. It goes through its normal fresh-launch process instead. The setting does not disable Quick Resume for the rest of your library, and it does not convert other games already in the Quick Resume group into fresh launches.

To restore the original behavior later, return to the same game-specific Quick Resume settings and turn off Disable Quick Resume. If an old suspended copy is still present, remove that copy from the Quick Resume group so the next start is unambiguously fresh.

Official feature context

Xbox describes Quick Resume as a feature powered by the technical capabilities of Xbox Velocity Architecture in Series X|S. Its Quick Resume group is intended to show games ready to launch from their suspended state. The April 2026 dashboard update added the per-game disable control, described by Xbox as a way to make games always launch fresh.

The practical result is a choice at the title level: preserve instant return where it works well, and require a clean start for games whose online connections or long-idle sessions make resuming unreliable.
