Choose the correct setting for your server
The file and key depend on both the server implementation and its version. Using the old property on a current Paper installation is the most common reason an apparently correct change has no effect.
| Server | Version covered here | File | Setting | Important note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vanilla Java | Java server versions using server.properties |
server.properties |
allow-nether=false |
Restart is required after saving. |
| Paper | 1.21.8 and older | server.properties |
allow-nether=false |
This is the classic Paper location. |
| Paper | 1.21.9 and newer | config/paper-global.yml |
Under misc:, set enable-nether: false |
YAML indentation and spaces matter. |
Mojang describes allow-nether as the option that specifies whether the Nether is enabled on a server. Paper’s API similarly defines its Nether setting as whether the server allows the Nether. The API documentation also distinguishes this server-level control from portal game rules.

Prepare the world before editing
Disabling a dimension is an operational change, not just a cosmetic portal block. Complete these checks while the server is still running, then perform the file edit with the server stopped.
- Announce a short maintenance window. Players should know that the server will restart and that Nether access will end.
- Move everyone out of the Nether. Have players return to the Overworld before shutdown. The current Paper guidance warns against leaving players in a dimension that will no longer be loaded.
- Stop the server cleanly. Use the server console’s normal stop action or the hosting panel’s graceful stop control. Do not edit configuration files while the server is writing world data.
- Make a restorable backup. Keep a copy of the world directory,
server.propertiesand, for Paper, the relevant configuration directory. Retain the existing Nether data even though it will not be loaded while the setting is disabled. - Identify the exact implementation and version. Check the startup log, server console or host panel. A Paper 1.21.9 server follows a different procedure from Paper 1.21.8, even though both are Java servers.
Vanilla Java: disable the Nether in server.properties
Use this procedure for a vanilla Java server and for Paper 1.21.8 or older.
Recommended Free Tools
- With the server stopped, open the server’s main directory—the folder containing the world folders and
server.properties. - Open
server.propertiesin a plain-text editor. - Find the line beginning with
allow-nether=. If it currently readsallow-nether=true, change only the value tofalse, producingallow-nether=false. - If the line is absent, add
allow-nether=falseas its own line. Do not place it inside another property or add quotation marks. - Save the file as plain text, preserving the exact filename and the
.propertiesextension. - Start the server and wait for startup to finish before allowing players to reconnect.
The setting is read during startup. Editing the file while the server is running, or changing it without a restart, leaves the active process using its previous value.
Paper 1.21.8 and older
Paper releases through 1.21.8 use the same server.properties key as vanilla. Follow the procedure above and set allow-nether=false. Paper plugins can still affect portal commands, warps or teleportation, so a successful property change does not guarantee that every plugin-mediated route to a Nether world has been removed.
If you upgraded an older Paper server and the change stopped working, verify the version first. Paper 1.21.9 introduced a different global configuration location; changing server.properties on that newer release is the wrong test.
Paper 1.21.9 and newer: use paper-global.yml
Current Paper releases use a YAML setting instead of the classic property. The file is config/paper-global.yml in the server directory.
- Stop the Paper server cleanly and confirm that players are outside the Nether.
- Open
config/paper-global.ymlwith a text editor that preserves spaces. - Locate the top-level
misc:section. - Inside that section, add or change the entry to
enable-nether: false. The key must be indented beneathmisc:, for example:misc: enable-nether: false - Use spaces, not tab characters, for indentation. Keep the key aligned with the other entries nested under
misc:. - Save the YAML file without changing its extension or encoding.
- Restart Paper and watch the console for configuration or startup errors before reopening the server.
YAML is structure-sensitive. A visually similar line at the wrong level is not the same setting, and a tab or malformed indentation can prevent Paper from loading the file. If the server refuses to start after the edit, restore the backup or correct the indentation, then try again.
Verify that the Nether is actually disabled
Test with an administrator account after the restart rather than relying only on the file contents.

- The classic UNO card game builds fun on game night with a Minecraft theme.
- UNO Minecraft features a deck and storage tin decorated with graphics from the popular video game.
- Players match colors and numbers to the card on top of the discard pile as in the classic game.
- The Creeper card unique to this deck forces other players to draw 3 cards.
- Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.
- Confirm the server completed startup without a configuration error.
- Attempt a normal Nether portal journey from the Overworld.
- Check whether any administrative teleport, warp or multi-world command still targets a Nether world.
- Review the console for errors from plugins that expect the Nether to exist.
If a portal does not behave as expected but a plugin still sends a player to a Nether world, that is a separate plugin or world-management issue rather than proof that the server-level setting failed.
What disabling the Nether changes
Nether-dependent progression
While the setting remains off, ordinary survival progression cannot obtain Nether-only resources through the Nether dimension. This affects any build, crafting chain or advancement that depends on travelling there. Decide whether that restriction is intentional before applying it to an established survival world.
Existing Nether files
Disabling the dimension does not make an existing Nether backup unnecessary. Keep the Nether data with the world backup so you can reverse the change or recover from an administrative mistake. Do not delete those files merely because the dimension is currently unavailable.
Players left in the dimension
A player logged out in the Nether is in the situation the Paper guidance specifically cautions about: the dimension will no longer be loaded after the change. Moving players to the Overworld before shutdown avoids stranded sessions and gives plugins fewer invalid world references to handle.

Why allow-nether=false may appear not to work
| Symptom | Likely cause | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| The Nether still loads on Paper 1.21.9 or newer. | The old server.properties key was edited. |
Set enable-nether: false under misc: in config/paper-global.yml, then restart. |
| No change after editing the file. | The server was not restarted, or the wrong server directory was edited. | Stop the active process, verify the directory used at startup, save the file and start again. |
| Paper fails to start after the YAML edit. | Tabs, incorrect indentation or a misplaced key. | Use spaces, nest the key below misc: and compare the file with the backup if necessary. |
| Portals are blocked but a command still reaches a Nether world. | A warp, teleport or multi-world plugin is handling the route. | Update or reconfigure the plugin and inspect its world or portal settings. |
| Players report missing or invalid locations after shutdown. | Someone remained in the Nether when it was disabled. | Restore the backup if needed, return players to the Overworld, then repeat the change during a clean maintenance window. |
Check the active file and process
Hosts often contain multiple server directories, especially after an upgrade or a test installation. Confirm that the file you edited belongs to the process that is actually running. The startup log and panel’s selected server directory are better evidence than a familiar-looking folder name.

Check the exact Paper version
The 1.21.8/1.21.9 boundary is decisive for the location of the setting. Do not assume that all Paper servers use server.properties; inspect the version shown by the running server.
Check syntax before changing anything else
For properties files, the complete value must be exactly false. For YAML, the key must be under misc: and indented with spaces. Avoid adding quotes, tabs or duplicate entries in different sections while troubleshooting.
Server setting, portal rules and plugins are different controls
Paper’s API documentation states that the server’s Nether allowance is separate from the portal game rule. A game rule can influence a particular portal interaction without disabling the Nether dimension at the server level. Conversely, disabling the dimension does not automatically reconfigure every plugin that creates warps, handles teleport commands or manages multiple worlds.

Update or reconfigure affected plugins if they log errors or continue exposing a Nether destination. Do not treat a plugin’s portal message as confirmation that the global server setting was applied.
Re-enable the Nether later
To reverse the change, stop the server, make a current backup and restore the same setting for its version: change allow-nether=false to allow-nether=true in server.properties for vanilla or Paper 1.21.8 and older, or change enable-nether: false to enable-nether: true beneath misc: in Paper 1.21.9 and newer. Save, restart and test with an administrator account before announcing that Nether travel is available again.
Using a managed Java server
A managed Minecraft host normally provides a file manager, editor or console rather than changing the underlying configuration model. The safe sequence remains the same: stop the server from the panel, create or download a backup, edit the version-appropriate file, save it as plain text, restart and test. If the panel regenerates configuration files, consult its Java-server documentation before editing; the required key is still determined by the vanilla or Paper version running underneath.
Scope and limitations
These instructions apply to Minecraft Java Edition servers running vanilla or Paper. The cited configuration does not establish a matching procedure for Bedrock Edition, Realms or console-hosted worlds. Those platforms may expose different controls, so do not copy the Java filenames or keys into a Bedrock configuration.
