To disable Microsoft Edge’s built-in Surf game, set the AllowSurfGame policy to Disabled. On Windows, administrators can apply it in Group Policy or by creating a registry value. On macOS, set the preference to false. Microsoft lists the policy as supported on iOS starting with version 146, but not on Android.
After changing the setting, restart Edge. The policy has no dynamic refresh, and disabling it blocks both offline play and direct visits to edge://surf.

What the AllowSurfGame policy controls
Surf is the surfing game built into Microsoft Edge. Microsoft introduced it in stable Edge build 83.0.478.37, allowing people to play when the browser was offline or by entering edge://surf while online. The game supports keyboard, mouse, touch and controller input. Microsoft’s product description also lists reduced-speed and high-visibility modes.
The control for removing access is a Boolean browser policy named AllowSurfGame. When the policy is disabled, Edge prevents users from launching Surf in either of its normal entry points:
#1 Best Overall
- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
- Starting the game when the device is offline.
- Navigating directly to
edge://surf.
This is an access control, not an uninstallation procedure. It does not remove Edge or change ordinary browsing features. The policy is applied per profile, and Microsoft states that it does not apply to a profile signed in with a Microsoft account.

Disable Surf with Group Policy on Windows
Group Policy is the clearest option for managed Windows computers because the setting is visible to administrators and can be deployed with other Edge policies.
- Open the Group Policy management tool used for the computer or user account.
- Go to Administrative Templates > Microsoft Edge.
- Find and open Allow surf game.
- Set the policy to Disabled.
- Apply the change and restart Microsoft Edge.
The restart is required because Microsoft documents that this policy does not support dynamic refresh. Closing and reopening the browser after the policy is applied ensures the profile reads the new value.

What users see after the policy is applied
With Allow surf game disabled, an offline Edge session cannot start Surf, and entering edge://surf no longer opens a playable game. Other Edge pages and normal web navigation continue to work.
Disable Surf through the Windows registry
Use the registry method when Group Policy is unavailable or when a script, configuration-management system or local administrative procedure is the preferred deployment route. The policy must be written under the Microsoft Edge policy key with the exact value name and type.
Required registry entry
| Item | Required value |
|---|---|
| Registry path | SOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdge |
| Value name | AllowSurfGame |
| Value type | REG_DWORD |
| Disable value | 0x00000000 (decimal 0) |
Manual registry procedure
- Open the Windows Registry Editor with an account authorized to modify the policy location.
- Navigate to
SOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdge. Create theMicrosoftEdgepolicy keys if they do not already exist. - Create a 32-bit DWORD value named
AllowSurfGame. - Set its data to
0, which is the hexadecimal representation0x00000000. - Close Registry Editor and restart Microsoft Edge.
The registry entry is the equivalent of setting Allow surf game to Disabled in Group Policy. Use the exact capitalization and spelling shown above; a different value name will not configure this policy.

Changing or restoring the setting
To allow Surf again, change the policy to an enabled state through Group Policy or change the registry value to the corresponding enabled configuration, then restart Edge. If the setting is controlled centrally, a local change may be overwritten by the organization’s management system.
Configure the preference on macOS
Microsoft documents the macOS configuration as the Edge preference key AllowSurfGame set to the Boolean value false.
- Open the management system or configuration profile used to manage Microsoft Edge on the Mac.
- Add the Microsoft Edge preference key
AllowSurfGame. - Set the value to the Boolean
false, not the text of a Windows registry number. - Deliver or save the preference, then restart Microsoft Edge.
The macOS form expresses the same policy decision as the Windows setting: users cannot play Surf offline or open it through edge://surf after Edge reloads the policy.
iPhone and iPad support
Microsoft lists AllowSurfGame=false as supported on iOS beginning with Microsoft Edge version 146. On an iOS deployment that has reached that version or later, configure the policy through the organization’s supported Edge management profile and use the Boolean value false.
Because the support threshold is version-specific, confirm that the installed Edge build is at least 146 before treating the policy as effective. Once delivered, close and reopen Edge so the new policy is loaded.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAndroid limitation
Microsoft lists AllowSurfGame as not supported on Android. There is therefore no documented Android policy equivalent in this configuration. A Windows registry value or macOS preference cannot be transferred to Android, and an Android management profile should not be expected to disable Surf through this policy.

Why a restart is part of the procedure
AllowSurfGame is a mandatory Boolean policy, but Microsoft specifies that it does not support dynamic refresh. In practical terms, changing the value while Edge is running does not guarantee an immediate change in the current browser process.
- Apply the policy first.
- Fully close Microsoft Edge.
- Reopen Edge under the affected profile.
- Test the result by visiting
edge://surfand, where relevant, by testing an offline launch.
If the game still opens immediately after a change, the first corrective action is a complete browser restart rather than repeatedly editing the policy.
Policy scope and profile caveats
The setting is per profile
Microsoft describes this policy as applying per profile. On a computer with multiple Edge profiles, check the profile in which Surf is being opened. A policy result observed in one profile should not automatically be assumed for every other profile.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Microsoft-account profiles are excluded
The policy does not apply to a profile signed in with a Microsoft account, according to Microsoft’s policy documentation. This is an important boundary for organizations that use several profile types: a correctly configured machine-level or browser policy may not produce the expected result inside that excluded profile.
Mandatory policy behavior
The policy is Boolean and can be made mandatory by the management system. “Disabled” is the blocking state; it is not the same as leaving the policy unconfigured. Keep the policy state, profile scope and account type aligned when troubleshooting.

Edge was not restarted
Restart the browser after every change. Dynamic refresh is unsupported for this policy, so a running Edge session can continue using its previous state.

The policy name or value is incorrect
On Windows, verify all four registry details: the path SOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdge, the value name AllowSurfGame, type REG_DWORD and data 0x00000000. In Group Policy, confirm that the entry is specifically Allow surf game and that its state is Disabled.

The device is running Android
There is no supported Android implementation of this policy. Use the platform support table above rather than attempting to apply Windows or macOS syntax on Android.
The iOS version is too old
Microsoft lists iOS support from version 146. On an earlier Edge version, an otherwise correct AllowSurfGame=false configuration should not be assumed to work.
What disabling Surf does not do
- It does not uninstall Microsoft Edge.
- It does not disable the browser’s offline pages generally.
- It does not block unrelated websites or browser games.
- It does not provide an Android control, because Microsoft lists the policy as unsupported there.
- It does not dynamically update an already running Edge process.
The policy has one focused purpose: prevent access to Edge’s built-in Surf game through offline play and the edge://surf address.

Recommended deployment checklist
- Identify the platform and Edge version, especially when configuring iOS.
- Choose the platform-native method: Group Policy or registry on Windows, an Edge preference on macOS, or an iOS management profile from version 146.
- Set the Boolean policy to its blocking state: Disabled in Group Policy or
falsewhere a preference value is used. - On Windows registry deployments, confirm the exact
REG_DWORDvalueAllowSurfGame=0x00000000. - Apply the configuration to the intended profile.
- Restart Microsoft Edge.
- Verify that
edge://surfis blocked and, for an offline test, confirm that Surf cannot start without a network connection.
