You cannot connect an unmodified Nintendo 3DS to a TV with a normal HDMI cable. The 3DS family has no native HDMI, DisplayPort, USB video-output mode, or official Nintendo TV dock. To show the real handheld on a television, you need an internal capture-board modification, wireless streaming through a computer, or a camera-based workaround. If you only want to play 3DS games on a large screen, emulation is another separate option.
Your options at a glance
| Goal | Best route |
|---|---|
| No modification and no computer | Not possible |
| Lowest-latency display of the physical 3DS | Internal capture board |
| You already have compatible custom firmware | Wireless streaming to a computer, then HDMI to the TV |
| Simply play 3DS software on a TV | Computer emulation, where legally appropriate |
| Temporary demonstration | Camera or phone pointed at the screens |
| Easier than modifying your own console | A tested pre-modded 3DS |
Why an ordinary HDMI cable does not work
Every standard 3DS-family model—including the original 3DS, 3DS XL, 2DS, New 3DS, New 3DS XL, and New 2DS XL—lacks a consumer video-output port. The charging connector carries power and data, not a TV signal. Nintendo has not released an official 3DS-to-TV adapter or dock; its 3DS support documentation does not provide a TV-output procedure.

That rules out USB-to-HDMI cables, a 3DS charging cable connected to a TV, and a normal HDMI capture card by themselves. A capture card can only receive a signal after specialist hardware has extracted video from the console.
Model compatibility comes first
Do not buy a capture board based only on the word “3DS.” The original 3DS, 3DS XL, New 3DS, New 3DS XL, 2DS, and New 2DS XL are different hardware targets.

The currently sold Loopy/3DS Capture Board solution is identified for the New Nintendo 3DS XL. Older Katsukity, Optimize, and other installations exist for additional models, but availability, software, repair support, and installer reliability vary. The specialist compatibility discussion and the installer’s current product information should be checked for the exact console revision before purchase.
A New 3DS XL is not the same product as an original 3DS XL. A board designed for one model should never be assumed to fit another.
Method 1: Install an internal 3DS capture board
A capture board is fitted inside the handheld and taps the console’s screen and audio signals. It then sends both screens and sound to an external device, normally over USB. This is the most practical method for regularly playing, recording, or streaming the physical 3DS with comparatively low latency.

The modification normally requires opening the console and soldering or other specialist internal work. You can either have a compatible console modified by an experienced installer or buy a console that already has the board installed. The official ordering information says self-installation requires soldering experience.
This is a third-party modification, not a Nintendo accessory. It may affect Nintendo’s normal support or warranty position, depending on the console’s country and purchase circumstances. Because the 3DS family is discontinued, choose an installer that can explain repairs, replacement parts, software requirements, turnaround time, and what happens if the console arrives damaged.
Method 2: Capture board to computer to TV
The most broadly documented connection path is:
Modified 3DS → USB → Windows computer → HDMI → TV

What you need
- A compatible 3DS with an installed capture board
- The board’s required USB data cable
- A Windows computer
- The board-specific driver and viewer software
- An HDMI cable from the computer to the TV
The current 3DS Capture Board documentation lists Windows 7 or newer for its official software, while macOS and Linux are not officially supported. It lists capture software version 6.1, updated September 6, 2024; software and driver availability can change.
Setup steps
- Identify the exact 3DS model and capture-board manufacturer.
- Install the matching driver and viewer. Do not use software intended for a different board.
- Connect the modified 3DS to the computer with the required USB data cable.
- Turn on the 3DS and open the board’s viewer application.
- Confirm that both screens and audio appear on the computer.
- Connect the computer’s HDMI output to the TV.
- Select the correct HDMI input on the TV.
- Use Windows display settings to duplicate the computer display or extend it as preferred.
- Maximize the viewer, use its full-screen option, and arrange the screens vertically, horizontally, or in separate windows.
The supplied viewer may be required for normal display. Some boards do not appear as ordinary webcams or universal USB video devices, so do not assume that OBS or another capture program can select the board directly.
For recording or streaming, capture the viewer window or desktop in OBS. The supplied software may also support AVI recording and PNG screenshots. The open-source cc3dsfs project is an alternative display program for several capture-card families, but compatibility depends on the board, driver, operating system, and configuration.
Method 3: Use a specialist TV kit or HDMI processor
Some third-party setups reduce the computer’s role by adding a TV kit or processing device:
Modified 3DS → compatible TV kit or processor → HDMI → TV
Merki documents HDMI TV-kit configurations for compatible capture hardware installed in systems including the New 2DS XL, New 3DS, and New 3DS XL. The exact board and console must match the kit’s requirements; the kit cannot create video output from an unmodified handheld.

Other configurations use a small computer or Raspberry Pi-style processor between the capture hardware and TV. A documented third-party example is described by FingerCramp. These are specialist, non-Nintendo arrangements. “Direct HDMI” in this context means modified 3DS plus capture hardware plus a conversion or processing device—not native HDMI from the console.
Method 4: Stream the 3DS wirelessly
A 3DS with compatible custom firmware can stream its screens over Wi-Fi to a computer. Connect that computer to the TV with HDMI:
3DS with custom firmware → Wi-Fi → computer → HDMI → TV
This avoids soldering and opening the console, but it is more dependent on software, network quality, the computer, and the specific 3DS model. You need a compatible custom-firmware setup, a streaming application and client, a computer that can receive the stream, and a reliable wireless connection.
Expect variable latency, image quality, and frame rate. Community reports describe differences between original and New 3DS systems, but these are user experiences rather than guaranteed specifications. Wireless streaming is best when avoiding hardware modification matters more than achieving the most responsive display.
What the TV will and will not show
Both screens
Capture software can display both screens, but it usually lets you choose the layout. Common choices include vertically stacked screens, side-by-side screens, a large top screen with a smaller bottom screen, top-screen-only output, or separate windows.

The lower screen remains touch-sensitive on the physical handheld. The TV does not become a replacement touchscreen, so you still need to touch the 3DS while looking at the larger display.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3D
Capture output is normally 2D only. The TV will not reproduce the 3DS’s glasses-free stereoscopic depth effect. This is a limitation of the capture path, not a setting that can be corrected with the television.
Audio
Supported capture boards can send audio with the video over USB. Whether it reaches the TV depends on the viewer, computer audio routing, HDMI path, or TV kit. If there is no sound, check the viewer mute control, Windows output device, TV input volume, and any audio settings in the capture software. Avoid routing TV audio back into the 3DS microphone, which can cause feedback.

No image
- Confirm that the console still boots normally.
- Identify the board manufacturer and exact model.
- Install the matching viewer and driver.
- Try a known-good USB data cable rather than a charge-only cable.
- Check whether the console revision is supported.
- Review the installer’s documentation and support forum.
- Contact the installer before opening the console again or attempting more soldering.
The viewer does not detect the board
Common causes include an incorrect viewer, missing driver, incompatible board, loose internal connection, faulty cable, or board-specific firmware or product-key requirements. A normal HDMI capture card will not solve a missing board connection.
OBS cannot see the 3DS
The board may not expose itself as a standard webcam. Open the manufacturer’s viewer first, then use OBS window capture or display capture. Alternatively, test a compatible client such as cc3dsfs if it supports the installed board.

Audio or video is delayed
Delay can come from USB processing, wireless streaming, HDMI conversion, computer buffering, or the TV’s image processing. Enable the TV’s Game Mode, prefer wired capture over Wi-Fi, test audio through the computer and TV separately, and use OBS sync offsets only after establishing which signal is late. The cc3dsfs documentation notes that some TVs add audio delay and that certain Windows driver configurations can add a frame of latency.

The bottom screen is hard to use
Rearrange or enlarge the bottom-screen window, but remember that display enlargement does not add touch control. The physical 3DS touchscreen remains necessary unless a particular third-party setup provides another compatible control method.
Buying checklist
- Confirm the exact model: 3DS, 3DS XL, New 3DS, New 3DS XL, 2DS, or New 2DS XL.
- Verify the board manufacturer, model, and compatibility with that console revision.
- Check whether the console is already modified or requires a send-in installation.
- Confirm the required viewer, driver, operating system, and USB cable.
- Ask whether a Windows computer is required or whether a compatible TV kit is included.
- Request evidence that both screens and audio work.
- Check the repair, return, shipping, and regional support policies.
- For a used console, ask for the exact board, included accessories, software, and a video of operation.
- Do not rely on a generic USB-to-HDMI adapter or an ordinary HDMI capture card.

Alternatives
Computer emulation
If your goal is simply to play 3DS software on a TV, emulation may be easier than modifying a handheld. It can offer modern scaling and controller options, but it is not output from the physical 3DS. Touchscreen, camera, microphone, motion-control, and compatibility behavior may differ. Use legally obtained game dumps and system data; the applicable rules depend on your jurisdiction and how those files were obtained.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Camera or phone
Pointing a camera at the two screens and mirroring the camera feed to a TV can work for a temporary demonstration. It introduces glare, perspective distortion, focus problems, and poor touchscreen usability, so it is not a genuine video-output solution.
A different console
If you want officially supported plug-and-play TV gaming, another Nintendo platform may be more practical. However, 3DS games are not automatically transferable to another console.
Which method should you choose?
- Choose an internal capture board for regular play, recording, or streaming with the lowest practical latency and the best physical-console experience.
- Choose wireless streaming if your 3DS already has compatible custom firmware and you accept more troubleshooting and variable latency.
- Choose a pre-modded console if you want to avoid soldering or shipping your own handheld, but verify the exact board, cables, software, and return policy.
- Choose emulation if playing the software on a TV matters more than displaying the original 3DS hardware.
- Choose a camera only as a short-term demonstration workaround.
The key buying decision is not which HDMI cable to use. It is whether your exact 3DS model has a compatible capture solution and whether you want a computer-based or specialist HDMI processing setup.
