For a direct MediaLive-to-YouTube stream, set the output’s keyframe interval to 2 seconds (never more than 4 seconds), then choose Normal, Low or Ultra-low latency in YouTube Live Control Room according to whether you value 4K and buffering tolerance or faster viewer feedback. Those are separate controls: MediaLive shapes the outgoing feed, while YouTube’s latency mode affects playback. A 24-hour run also needs its own failover and recording plan; YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours, not a VOD guarantee for one 24-hour event.

Which settings control latency?

Latency is the delay between capture at the encoder and playback for a viewer. In a MediaLive workflow, think of it in two parts: the encoder’s output timing and YouTube’s playback mode. The selected mode is not a promise of a fixed end-to-end delay; viewer network conditions and stream health matter too. YouTube describes the typical experience as under 10 seconds for most viewers in Low latency and under five seconds for most viewers in Ultra-low latency. These are typical descriptions, not guarantees.

  • MediaLive: choose the video format, bitrate and keyframe cadence, and send the feed to YouTube.
  • YouTube Live Control Room: choose the playback latency mode for the event.
  • Your complete delivery path: test the actual combination, since a setting alone does not establish the delay viewers will experience.

YouTube’s “Manage live stream settings” guide defines stream latency as the delay between an encoder or camera capturing an event and the event appearing in the stream. Its “Understand live streaming latency” guide gives the typical Low and Ultra-low descriptions above and warns that the latter may increase buffering.

Choose the YouTube playback mode

Mode When it fits Trade-off
Normal latency 4K, broad compatibility or features that take priority over fast back-and-forth interaction. Viewers generally see more delay than with the low-latency modes. YouTube describes this mode as supporting all resolutions and live features.
Low latency Viewers should see updates sooner, but the stream does not depend on near-real-time conversation. YouTube says most viewers typically experience less than 10 seconds. Lower buffering margin is a trade-off, and this mode does not support 4K.
Ultra-low latency Live chat, Q&A or another format where quick audience interaction matters most. YouTube says most viewers typically experience less than five seconds. Buffering risk can increase, and this mode does not support 4K.

Choose the mode in the event’s latency setting in YouTube Live Control Room. If 4K is a requirement, use Normal latency. If you choose either low-latency mode, test it with the intended audience connection and watch for buffering rather than treating the typical timing as a service-level guarantee.

Configure MediaLive for YouTube ingest

  1. Choose the delivery protocol. For a straightforward MediaLive-to-YouTube contribution, configure an RTMP or RTMPS output to the ingest destination shown for the YouTube event. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Keep the stream key private and use the key associated with the intended event.
  2. Set the keyframe interval. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Configure the MediaLive output’s GOP/keyframe cadence to match the selected interval, taking its frame-rate units into account. For example, a two-second GOP corresponds to 60 frames at 30 fps or 120 frames at 60 fps. Confirm the resulting interval rather than copying a frame count between frame rates.
  3. Use constant bitrate (CBR) and select a bitrate for the exact codec, resolution and frame rate. YouTube publishes ranges by format; the following H.264 figures are YouTube guidance, not AWS service limits.
  4. Match audio and video settings. YouTube lists H.264, HEVC and AV1 video, with AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. H.264 video with AAC audio is a conservative compatibility choice when there is no reason to use another listed combination.
  5. Preview before the scheduled start. Check YouTube’s incoming stream preview and health indicators, confirm the expected resolution and frame rate, and verify audio before relying on an unattended run.
YouTube H.264 target Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

These are the H.264 rows for 1080p in YouTube’s “Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions” guidance. Use that guide’s matching row for other resolutions, frame rates or codecs; do not treat the figures above as a universal bitrate target. Set the output to a bitrate your source and contribution path can sustain.

Do not apply the HLS segment setting to a direct RTMP output

AWS’s one-second segment recommendation belongs to a different workflow: low-latency HLS output from MediaLive through AWS Elemental MediaPackage v2. It is not a general setting for a direct MediaLive-to-YouTube RTMP/RTMPS stream.

Workflow Latency implication Configuration boundary
Direct RTMP/RTMPS to YouTube YouTube’s encoder guidance and selected playback mode are the relevant starting points. Use YouTube’s keyframe recommendation; do not substitute the MediaPackage HLS segment table.
MediaLive to MediaPackage v2 using low-latency HLS AWS says shorter segments can improve latency and recommends 1-second segments for this workflow. AWS also identifies GOP size, retry interval, file-cache duration and restart settings as factors. Its segment guidance is scoped to this HLS workflow.
HLS ingest to YouTube YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments rather than a continuous stream, and the Ultra-low option is unavailable. Use the applicable HLS playlist and segment requirements; do not treat HLS as an Ultra-low-latency path.

MediaLive can also be part of an HLS-to-MediaPackage design for reasons beyond latency. Keep its AWS-specific segment and retry parameters within that architecture rather than copying them into a direct YouTube destination.

Plan continuity separately from latency

A low-latency mode does not make a 24-hour channel resilient. AWS documents running two identical MediaLive pipelines as a resiliency option and using schedule actions to switch inputs. YouTube recommends testing the setup and monitoring stream health. Neither source establishes that a particular configuration will run uninterrupted for 24 hours; rehearse the complete path and its failure behavior before leaving it unattended.

Before the run

  • Identify what happens if the source input disappears, the encoder output is interrupted or YouTube stops receiving the feed.
  • If using redundant pipelines or scheduled input changes, test the switch and confirm the expected output reaches YouTube.
  • Arrange a separate recording if the program itself must be retained. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that statement does not guarantee an archive for one 24-hour event.
  • Monitor MediaLive and YouTube stream health during the run, and define who will respond to an alert or an unexpected loss of feed.

Single 24-hour event or successive events?

Decide whether the channel needs one continuous event or a sequence of shorter events. The documented automatic archive condition covers streams under 12 hours, so do not rely on a single 24-hour event producing a complete YouTube VOD. Confirm current YouTube behavior for the planned event and keep an independent recording when a full copy matters. The cited archive guidance describes archiving, not a hard maximum stream duration.

Common problems and what to check

  • Viewers report more delay than expected: verify the YouTube event’s selected latency mode and the MediaLive keyframe interval. Then test playback from the audience’s actual networks; a selected mode does not guarantee a particular glass-to-glass delay.
  • Playback buffers in Ultra-low mode: YouTube warns that this mode may increase buffering. If interaction does not justify that risk, test Low latency or Normal latency instead.
  • 4K is unavailable with a low-latency mode: Low and Ultra-low modes do not support 4K. Use Normal latency if the 4K output is essential.
  • The stream fails ingest checks or does not appear as expected: check the event’s stream key and destination, then compare the output codec, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, audio format and keyframe interval with YouTube’s encoder guidance.
  • AWS HLS tuning does not improve the direct YouTube feed: confirm whether the destination is actually MediaPackage v2 HLS. AWS’s one-second segment recommendation is not a direct RTMP/RTMPS setting.
  • The 24-hour program is missing or incomplete as a VOD: the under-12-hour automatic archive guidance does not promise a complete archive for one 24-hour event. Use the independent recording and verify the event’s archive behavior.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your actual goal is to keep a prerecorded YouTube channel running, rather than configure MediaLive yourself, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service for uploaded videos and playlists. Upload a video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; the cloud keeps the loop running without leaving a computer or home connection on. It streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera.
