You can reduce reliance on South Korean stocks without giving up an AI investment thesis. Start by measuring your total exposure across individual stocks and the underlying holdings of your funds. Then decide whether you want to reduce South Korea concentration, semiconductor concentration, dependence on AI infrastructure spending, or all three: each calls for a different kind of diversification.
There is no universally suitable allocation. Your investment horizon, risk tolerance, tax residence, account type, and current holdings all affect what changes make sense.

How can I tell what my portfolio actually depends on?
Look through every holding, not just the names of the funds in your account. A global or AI-themed fund may own South Korean companies alongside stocks you hold directly, and several funds may own the same large issuers. The result can be more concentration than the number of line items suggests.
Audit four kinds of exposure
- Country and operating exposure: Check country weights, and consider where companies earn revenue, make products, and rely on suppliers. A company’s listing country alone may not describe its economic exposure.
- Issuer concentration: Identify the largest underlying companies and add together your direct and indirect exposure to each. Review the fund’s top holdings and their weights.
- AI value chain: Separate semiconductor makers and equipment suppliers from cloud and data infrastructure, software, services, and businesses adopting AI in other industries. A fund labelled “AI” may concentrate on only one or two of these segments.
- Fund overlap: Compare underlying holdings across funds. Different fund names or mandates do not necessarily mean different economic risks.
Record the date of each fund document you use. Holdings and country weights change, so an audit is a dated snapshot rather than a permanent description.

Which kind of diversification are you trying to achieve?
“Beyond South Korean stocks” can mean several things. Reducing one country’s weight does not automatically reduce exposure to semiconductors or the AI infrastructure investment cycle. Use the goal that matches the concentration you found.

These routes are not interchangeable. For example, holding more countries may reduce South Korea’s portfolio weight while leaving substantial exposure to chip demand, supply chains, or AI infrastructure spending.

Why a global or regional AI fund may still hold Korean stocks
A fund’s geographic label does not guarantee that it excludes South Korea. Global X’s 2026 AI and Big Data (AIQ) fact sheet extract reports South Korea at 7.40% of country exposure. The extract does not establish the holdings-data date, so treat that figure as a dated extract—not a current weight—and check the latest fact sheet before making a decision.

Country weights are only one part of the picture. Companies in different countries can depend on the same customers, suppliers, technology cycles, and capital-spending plans. Check those shared exposures as well as the country list.
What risks remain when you diversify across AI investments?
Semiconductor and infrastructure risks
AI-related semiconductor investments can be affected by rapid product cycles and obsolescence, supply-chain disruptions, regulation, competition, and cross-border trade. In its summary prospectus dated April 1, 2026, Global X Funds warns that companies developing AI infrastructure and related products and hardware are vulnerable to these risks. The prospectus also notes the role of technological advances in that vulnerability.

Spreading semiconductor holdings across countries does not remove exposure to these shared industry risks. A September 2026 prospectus filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission says that slower AI adoption or infrastructure investment could reduce demand for semiconductor manufacturing capacity and hurt fund holdings.

AI adoption and spending assumptions
AI adoption and infrastructure investment are not guaranteed to continue at their current pace. Even holdings in software, services, or other sectors may depend on sustained adoption, customer spending, or expected productivity benefits. Examine what each fund owns instead of assuming that an AI label describes a broad range of independent return drivers.

Currency and geopolitical exposure
International holdings can add currency and geopolitical risks alongside country diversification. Assess the markets and supply chains represented in the portfolio, including how trade restrictions or policy changes could affect companies with cross-border operations.

Keep reported performance measures in context. BlackRock’s 2026 Fall Investment Directions reported 54% year-over-year earnings growth for AI infrastructure companies versus 14% for the S&P 500 excluding AI infrastructure in its Q2 2026 comparison. Those figures describe a specific past comparison; they are not a forecast and do not establish that AI infrastructure will outperform in the future.
Historical or dated growth figures do not resolve whether your own portfolio is too concentrated. Use them as context, then assess fund holdings, valuations and risk disclosures using current documents.

- Set the objective. Decide whether the main concern is South Korean country weight, individual issuers, semiconductors, AI infrastructure, or reliance on a single investment theme.
- Choose a comparison set. Compare broad global or international funds with any AI-focused alternatives you are considering. If evaluating AI exposure, distinguish chips and equipment, cloud and data infrastructure, software, services, and adopters in other industries.
- Use current primary documents. Review each fund’s prospectus, fact sheet, holdings date, top positions, country weights, mandate, fees, and stated risks. Check the same information across existing funds to find overlap.
- Assess the risks that remain. Ask whether a proposed change actually reduces dependence on a common spending cycle, supplier group, customer base, currency, or geopolitical environment—or mainly changes the country label.
- Consider the whole financial picture. Account type, tax residence, time horizon, risk tolerance, and other assets may affect whether and how to make a change. Avoid choosing percentages based on a generic rule.
One dated comparison illustrates why a broader portfolio need not have the same AI exposure as a technology-focused one: T. Rowe Price research using data as of July 31, 2026 described the MSCI EAFE Value Index as having almost no direct AI-infrastructure exposure. That is a comparison point for that index and date, not a guarantee about future holdings, returns, or fit for an individual investor.
