- Open the Microsoft Store from the Windows 11 Start menu.
- Search for Age of Empires: Definitive Edition.
- Open the listing and check the exact name and product details. Do not select Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition, Age of Empires IV, or a bundle by mistake.

If you prefer Steam for PC game ownership, updates, cloud features, or achievements, use the separate official Steam listing for Age of Empires: Definitive Edition on Steam.
- Install and open the official Steam client.
- Sign in to your Steam account.
- Search the Steam store for Age of Empires: Definitive Edition, or open the exact listing linked above.
- Purchase the game if it is not already in your Steam library.

Windows 11 compatibility and system requirements
The official product information reviewed for this game lists 64-bit Windows 10 version 14393.0 or higher as the operating-system requirement on the Microsoft side. Steam lists 64-bit Windows 10. Neither reviewed primary listing provides a separate Windows 11 certification statement for this specific title.
Windows 11 is a later Windows release, so the published Windows 10 requirement is relevant when checking the system, but it should not be rewritten as an explicit official Windows 11 guarantee. - The listing is for the original game, not Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition, or Age of Empires IV.
- The storefront and account are the ones where you intend to own the game.
- The storage requirement matches the original game rather than a different edition or bundle.
The original Definitive Edition has a published storage requirement of roughly 17–20 GB. Other entries in the series have different requirements, so a generic “Age of Empires Definitive Edition download” result is not sufficient to identify the correct product.

What to do if the Microsoft Store download fails
Do not switch to a random download site or use an unofficial installer. Try the following in order:
- Restart the Microsoft Store. Close the Store completely, reopen it, and search for the exact game again.
- Check account ownership. Confirm that you are signed in with the Microsoft account that owns the game or provides the relevant subscription access.
- Check free space. Keep at least 20 GB available, with additional room for temporary installation files.
- Check the system. Confirm that Windows is 64-bit and that the PC meets the processor, memory, graphics, and DirectX requirements.
- Clear the Store cache. Press Windows key + R, enter
wsreset.exe, and press Enter. Wait for the cache-reset process to finish and for the Microsoft Store to reopen, then try the download again. - Retry the installation. If the Store still fails, use the official Age of Empires support instructions for reinstalling the game or resolving the particular Store error.
The official support material treats wsreset.exe, checking requirements and storage, restarting the Store, and reinstalling as troubleshooting steps—not as alternate ways to obtain the game.
Moving the game to another drive
If the Windows system drive is short on space, you can manage the installation through the storefront that installed it:
