How to Download and Install a Free PS4 Game from the PlayStation Store

On your PS4, open PlayStation Store, choose a game currently listed as free-to-play, and select its download or add-to-library option. To download it later or find it again, go to Library > Purchased, select the game, then choose Download. Sony says the game installs automatically when the download finishes.

Download a free-to-play game on your PS4

1. Sign in to the PlayStation account you want to use on the PS4.

2. From the PS4 home screen, open PlayStation Store and find a game marked free-to-play. You can also browse demos. The available catalog and a game’s free status can vary by region and change over time, so check the current Store listing on your console.

3. Open the game’s Store page and select the option to add or download it. Button wording can differ between listings and software versions. If the listing identifies the game as free-to-play, you do not need to make a paid purchase to start its download.

4. To locate a game already added to your account, open Library > Purchased, select the game, and choose Download. Sony says the game installs automatically after downloading. PlayStation Support: Download games and add-ons from PlayStation Store.

5. Wait for the download and installation to complete, then launch the game from the PS4 home screen. Download time depends on the game and your network connection.

Free-to-play games and PlayStation Plus monthly games are different

A game listed as free-to-play or a demo is a Store download. A monthly game offered through PlayStation Plus is a membership benefit instead: Sony describes monthly games as available at no extra cost during an active membership. That does not make them unrestricted, permanently free-to-play games. Check the current offer and access terms before downloading. PlayStation Plus.

What you need before downloading

• A PlayStation account: Sign in on the PS4 to use PlayStation Store. Sony’s PS4 setup guidance covers signing in and getting started.

• Working Store access: If the Store or download flow is unavailable, check that you are signed in and that the console’s system software is up to date. See PlayStation Support’s PS4 system software guide.

• Enough storage space: If the PS4 reports that there is not enough space, free up room or use storage options described below.

Free up space if the game will not download

Sony lists three approaches when PS4 storage is full: delete applications, download to USB extended storage, or upgrade the console’s hard drive. Choose based on whether you want to keep installed games and whether you are comfortable changing hardware. PlayStation Support: Manage PS4 storage space.

• Delete applications: This frees space without adding hardware. If you delete a game, you can download it again from your Library.

• Use USB extended storage: This adds storage without replacing the internal drive. Follow Sony’s compatibility and setup guidance before connecting a drive.

• Upgrade the internal hard drive: This is a hardware change; consult Sony’s instructions and make sure you are comfortable with the process before proceeding.

Start a download remotely (optional)

You can start a download remotely, but Sony’s setup requires the PS4 to be activated as your account’s primary console and automatic downloads to be configured. If those conditions are not met, the download starts the next time you turn on the console. Downloading directly from the PS4 avoids this additional setup. See Sony’s PS4 download instructions.
