Download F4SE only from the official F4SE website or its official Nexus Mods page. Choose the build that matches your installed Fallout 4 runtime, extract it into the folder containing Fallout4.exe, launch the game with f4se_loader.exe, and verify it with getf4seversion.
As of August 18, 2026, the official compatibility list includes F4SE 0.7.8 for Fallout 4 runtime 1.11.221, but the newest download is not automatically correct for every installation.

What is F4SE?
F4SE, or Fallout 4 Script Extender, is a free framework that expands the scripting functions available to Fallout 4. It does not add a game mode or work as a mod manager by itself. Instead, many interface, gameplay, settlement, utility, and advanced scripting mods use F4SE as a prerequisite.
F4SE is intended for supported Windows PC editions of Fallout 4. Download it from the official project website or the official Nexus Mods listing; avoid repacked installers and random download sites.

Check whether your Fallout 4 edition is supported
The standard F4SE release supports the Steam and GOG versions of Fallout 4. Fallout 4 VR uses a separate build. The Microsoft Store/Game Pass and Epic Games versions are not supported by the project, and F4SE cannot be installed on Xbox or PlayStation.

Match F4SE to your Fallout 4 runtime
F4SE’s version number and Fallout 4’s version number are different. You must match the F4SE build to the runtime of your installed Fallout4.exe, rather than choosing the newest-looking archive.
To check the runtime in Windows, find Fallout4.exe, right-click it, choose Properties, open the Details tab, and inspect File version. A mod manager or diagnostic tool may also show the runtime. Match the relevant leading runtime components listed by F4SE; extra components after that compatibility portion are not important.

These listings reflect the official page on August 18, 2026. Fallout 4 updates can change the required pairing, so check the official site again after a game update.
Download the correct F4SE archive
- Open the official F4SE website.
- Find the entry matching your Fallout 4 runtime.
- Download the standard archive for Steam or GOG Fallout 4, or the separate VR archive for Fallout 4 VR.
You can alternatively use the official F4SE Nexus Mods page, including its Files tab. The official website is the best authority for the runtime-to-build relationship.
Do not download Skyrim’s SKSE by mistake, use a third-party “F4SE installer,” or trust a video link to an unfamiliar file host. F4SE’s official instructions recommend an archive extractor such as 7-Zip; use the desktop version rather than the Windows Store version mentioned in the project documentation.

Install F4SE manually
1. Find the Fallout 4 root folder
Open the folder containing Fallout4.exe. A typical Steam installation is:
C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonFallout 4Your Steam library may be on another drive, and GOG installations use a different location. Do not assume that the Data folder is the destination: F4SE’s loader and runtime DLL belong in the game root folder beside Fallout4.exe.
2. Extract the archive contents
Open the downloaded F4SE archive and copy the contents of its top-level folder into the folder containing Fallout4.exe. Merge the archive’s Data folder with the game’s existing Data folder when Windows prompts you.
A correctly installed standard build will look broadly like this:

└── other F4SE filesThe exact DLL filename depends on your runtime. Do not rename it. If the archive includes a src folder, ignore it; it is intended for programmers, not normal players.

Run f4se_loader.exe from the same folder as Fallout4.exe. Launching the ordinary Fallout 4 executable can bypass the script extender.

For convenience, create a desktop shortcut to f4se_loader.exe, add it as a non-Steam game, or configure your mod manager to launch that executable. The important part is that the selected launch target is f4se_loader.exe, not just the standard game executable.
Install F4SE with Vortex
If you already use Vortex, open the official F4SE Nexus page and use its Vortex download option. Install and enable the package, deploy it through Vortex, and use the F4SE shortcut on the Vortex dashboard when launching.
Vortex does not remove the need to match F4SE to your Fallout 4 runtime. It also cannot make an outdated native-code plugin compatible with a newer game runtime. Manual installation is often easier when diagnosing whether root-level files are in the correct location.

Confirm that the executable selected in MO2 points to the loader.
Verify that F4SE works
- Start Fallout 4 through
f4se_loader.exe. - Open the in-game console with the tilde key, usually
~or`. Keyboard layouts may use a different key or key combination. - Enter the following command:
getf4seversionPress Enter. A working F4SE installation should display the installed F4SE version. If the command is not recognized, the game was probably not started through F4SE, the files are in the wrong folder, or the archive does not match the game edition.

“F4SE is out of date”
This usually means Fallout 4 updated while your F4SE files still target an older runtime.

- Close Fallout 4.
- Check the version of
Fallout4.exe. - Download the matching F4SE build from the official source.
- Replace the old F4SE files in the game root.
- Launch with the updated
f4se_loader.exe.
Reinstalling the same old archive will not fix a runtime mismatch.

Confirm that f4se_loader.exe is beside Fallout4.exe and that you launched it directly. Check that you did not place the loader in Fallout 4Data or create an extra nested folder such as Fallout 4f4sef4se_loader.exe. Then run getf4seversion in the console.
getf4seversion is not recognized
Make sure the console opened successfully, the game was started with the correct loader, and you installed the standard build into standard Fallout 4 rather than installing a VR build or vice versa. Recheck that you copied files from the archive’s top-level folder.
A mod still crashes after F4SE is updated
F4SE can be installed correctly while a dependent native-code plugin remains incompatible. The F4SE project notes that such plugins must be updated by their individual authors for major runtime changes, including the 1.10.980 and 1.11 series.
- Read the affected mod’s requirements.
- Check whether it supports your installed Fallout 4 runtime.
- Update the mod and its prerequisite libraries.
- Temporarily disable recently added DLL-based plugins.
- Test F4SE with a minimal loadout.
Antivirus flags f4se_loader.exe
F4SE’s DLL-injection behavior can trigger warnings from poorly configured antivirus software. That does not justify ignoring every warning. Confirm that you downloaded the archive from the official F4SE website or official Nexus page, scan it with your security software, and do not whitelist a file from an unverified mirror.

This is a normal compatibility risk for script extenders. Check the official F4SE page for a build matching the new runtime, and check every DLL-based mod separately. If your setup depends on older plugins, keep backups or use a version-management strategy rather than repeatedly launching with mismatched files.

Final compatibility check
F4SE is free, but installing it successfully depends on four details: a supported Fallout 4 edition, a matching runtime and F4SE build, files copied into the folder containing Fallout4.exe, and launching through f4se_loader.exe. Once in the game, getf4seversion provides the quickest confirmation.
