To install GTA V mods on Epic Games, first identify whether you’re launching Legacy or Enhanced, then check that the mod and every required tool support that edition and your installed game build. For supported archive-based mods, OpenIV can locate an Epic installation and use a separate mods folder. Keep modifications out of GTA Online: Rockstar warns that online modding can lead to account action.
Before you download a mod: check your GTA V edition
Epic’s PC catalog includes both GTA V Legacy and Enhanced. Epic says existing owners receive Enhanced automatically, and buyers of Enhanced also receive Legacy. That entitlement does not mean a mod made for one edition will work with the other. Check which edition you actually launch and install.

There is no universal winner between the editions for modding: compatibility depends on the particular mod, its dependencies, and the exact game build.

Check the mod’s requirements before installing
Open the mod author’s current page and confirm all of the following before changing game files:
- The supported GTA V edition: Legacy, Enhanced, or both.
- The supported game version or build, especially if the game has recently updated.
- Required tools, scripts, or frameworks and their supported versions.
- The exact installation method and destination path for each file.
Do not assume an older tutorial’s named tool version or path is still current. Rockstar notes that game programming changes over time; after an update, check for releases of the mod and its dependencies that match your installed edition and build. The community guide at GTA5-Mods is a general reference, not a guarantee that a particular mod works on your setup.

Find your Epic installation in OpenIV
OpenIV’s instructions explain how to identify an Epic installation through Epic launcher manifest files, then select the discovered game directory in OpenIV. The location can vary, so do not assume one fixed GTA V install path.
- Open OpenIV and choose the GTA V option for Windows.
- When prompted for the game folder, use OpenIV’s Epic Games instructions to inspect the Epic launcher manifest text files in the hidden
ProgramDatapath and locate the directory containingGTA5.exe. - Select that discovered directory in OpenIV and confirm it identifies the intended GTA V edition.

Choose the installation method that matches the mod
Mods do not all install the same way. Use the author’s instructions for the mod’s format and the edition it supports.

OpenIV describes the separate folder as a way to keep supported modifications apart from original game files; it is not a universal installer or compatibility fix. Install carefully and preserve a recovery path
Install one mod at a time, keeping a note of the files and paths you changed. That makes it easier to identify which change caused a launch problem or conflict. Keep original files intact where the mod’s instructions allow, and do not overwrite game files unless its installation guide specifically requires it.
If the game stops launching, first compare the installed edition and build with the mod and dependency requirements. Then undo the last change using the mod’s documented removal steps. Backups or launcher file verification may help restore files, but use only recovery steps supported by current Epic and mod instructions for your specific installation; do not assume verification will preserve or repair every mod setup.

Use the modded setup only in Story Mode
Rockstar distinguishes Story Mode from online play in its support guidance. Its policy warns that modifying GTA Online can lead to disciplinary action, including bans or suspension. Do not enter GTA Online with modified game files, scripts, or tools.
Rockstar’s BattlEye FAQ says BattlEye is needed during online sessions and describes platform-specific ways to disable it for Story Mode. Disabling BattlEye for Story Mode is not permission to use mods online. Keep a clean, unmodified setup for online play and follow Rockstar’s current guidance at Rockstar’s GTA Online BattlEye FAQ. Troubleshoot by edition and build first
If a mod breaks after a game update—or does not work after installation—check compatibility before adding more tools or changing more files.
- Verify whether the Epic launcher is opening Legacy or Enhanced.
- Check the installed game build against the mod author’s current compatibility notes.
- Check that required tools and dependencies support the same edition and build.
- Review the author’s installation path and undo changes that do not match those instructions.
Compatibility can change as the game and its tools are updated. A general guide or an older tutorial cannot establish that an individual mod is compatible with your current installation.
