To play Minecraft Java Edition with Forge 1.20.1, download the Installer from the official Forge 1.20.1 downloads page, run it, choose Install Client, then launch the Forge profile in the Minecraft Launcher. The steps below explain which build to choose and how to avoid confusing the player installer with Forge’s mod-development files.
Choose the Forge 1.20.1 build
The official page offers more than one Forge build for Minecraft 1.20.1. As of October 4, 2026, it marked 47.4.26 as Latest (dated October 2, 2026) and 47.4.10 as Recommended (dated October 9, 2025). These labels can change, so check the page when you download.

| Build | Official page label on October 4, 2026 | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|
| 47.4.26 | Latest; dated October 2, 2026 | You want the newest listed build and your mods or modpack support it. |
| 47.4.10 | Recommended; dated October 9, 2025 | You prefer the build Forge marks Recommended, or your mods or modpack require it. |
Use the build required by your modpack or by the individual mods you plan to use. A newer Forge build is not automatically compatible with every mod. The page’s Latest and Recommended links are the simplest choices; its version list is intended for people who need a specific build.
Download the right file
On the Forge 1.20.1 page, select Installer for a player-side client installation. The page also offers the MDK (Mod Development Kit), which is for developers creating or testing mods rather than for installing Forge to play. Forge’s getting-started documentation describes the MDK in a development workflow.

- Open the official Forge 1.20.1 downloads page.
- Choose the desired build’s Installer link. If you need a particular build, use the version list; otherwise, choose one of the page’s top Latest or Recommended links.
- Save the installer file, then open it. If your computer asks which application should open it, use a Java runtime.
Install the Forge client
- Close Minecraft and the Minecraft Launcher before running the installer if it reports that they must be closed.
- In the Forge installer window, select Install Client.
- Check the Minecraft installation directory shown by the installer. If you want to keep this Forge setup separate, the Forge support FAQ describes using a separate game directory.
- Select OK or the installer’s completion button and wait for the success message.
Forge’s support FAQ covers installing the client through the official launcher. Minecraft describes its launcher as a way to download game versions, manage profiles, and access mod support on its download page.
Launch Minecraft with Forge 1.20.1
- Open the Minecraft Launcher and go to the installations or profiles list.
- Select the Forge 1.20.1 installation created by the installer. If it is not visible, check the launcher’s installation list and confirm you are using the launcher associated with the game directory you installed into.
- Start the game. Confirm the title screen or launcher profile identifies Forge and Minecraft 1.20.1 before adding mods.
Keep mods in the game directory for this Forge installation, not in a different Minecraft version’s directory. If you use a separate directory, make sure you launch the profile that points to it.

Java requirements and common installation problems
Java version
The Forge FAQ maps Minecraft versions 1.18–1.20.4 to Java 17, which includes Minecraft 1.20.1. This is player runtime guidance; it does not mean every player must install a Java Development Kit. Forge’s separate requirement for a Java 17 JDK and 64-bit JVM applies to mod development, as described in its getting-started documentation.
The installer will not open
The installer is a Java application. If it does not launch, check that a suitable Java runtime is available and that your operating system is opening the installer with Java. The FAQ’s Java mapping for this game-version range is Java 17.

The Forge profile is missing
- Reopen the launcher’s installations list and look for the Forge 1.20.1 profile.
- Confirm the installer completed successfully and installed to the game directory used by the launcher.
- If you chose a separate game directory, check that you are opening the corresponding installation.
A mod fails to load
Check the mod’s own Minecraft and Forge version requirements. A mod that supports Minecraft 1.20.1 may still require a particular Forge build; do not assume that the Latest build works with every mod.
