Install the correct Minecraft edition first, then match the map to that edition. Java maps are normally downloaded, extracted, and copied into Java’s saves folder; Bedrock maps commonly arrive as .mcworld files that you open to import, or as Marketplace content retrieved from Marketplace > My Library. Bedrock add-ons are enabled separately in a world’s Resource packs or Behavior packs settings.
Choose the map format before you download
Minecraft Java Edition and Minecraft Bedrock Edition do not use the same world-content workflow. A Java save is not automatically a Bedrock world, and a Bedrock download will not become a Java map simply because its files are placed in a Java folder. Check the edition named on the download page before saving anything.

| Content type | Typical source | Installation path | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Java custom map | Downloadable archive or world folder | Extract the world and put it in Java’s saves directory |
The map must be for Java Edition and support the Minecraft version you are running |
Bedrock .mcworld |
Downloadable world file | Open or import the file with Minecraft | Automatic import depends on the device’s file association |
| Bedrock Marketplace world | Official Marketplace | Marketplace > My Library, then select the item and choose Download, Create this World, or Equip | Marketplace content is for Bedrock Edition |
| Bedrock add-on | Marketplace or an add-on file | Activate its Resource packs or Behavior packs in the target world or Realm | The packs must be enabled for the specific world or Realm where you want to use them |
Use the table as a decision point: a Java archive belongs in the Java save directory, while a Bedrock world file is opened for import. Marketplace entries and add-ons use Bedrock’s in-game world settings rather than the Java saves workflow.
Install and launch Minecraft first
You need a working Minecraft installation before adding a downloaded map. The official Minecraft Launcher page identifies the PC product as Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition and offers two installation routes.
#1 Best Overall
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
- Open the official Minecraft Launcher page.
- Choose either the Microsoft Store option or the Download Launcher button.
- Install the launcher, open it, and start the edition required by the map.
- Return to the map’s download information and verify that its edition matches the edition you launched.
Do not begin by copying files into a folder from an edition you have not installed. A correctly placed Java world will not appear in Bedrock, and a Bedrock import cannot be opened from Java’s single-player list.
Install a custom map in Java Edition
Java custom maps generally arrive as a compressed archive or as an already-extracted world folder. The workflow is the same on every operating system: obtain the map, extract it when needed, place the world folder in the Java game directory’s saves folder, and then select it from Java’s single-player worlds.
1. Confirm Java compatibility and the supported version
Read the map’s description before downloading. It must identify Java Edition, and it should state the Minecraft version or version range it supports. A map made for a different version may fail to load correctly or may not behave as its creator intended. Treat the stated version as a requirement, not an optional recommendation.
2. Download the map archive or folder
Save the download somewhere you can find easily, such as your downloads directory. Common Java downloads are compressed archives; an archive is not itself the world that Java displays in the single-player menu.
3. Extract the archive when necessary
Use your operating system’s extraction command to unpack the archive. After extraction, identify the folder that represents the world. If the archive opens to an extra wrapper folder, continue inward until you reach the actual world folder rather than copying the outer download container into saves.

4. Open Java’s game directory
The exact location varies with the operating system and launcher profile. The current community installation guide lists this path for macOS:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/saves
On other systems, use the game directory selected by the launcher profile you use to run Java. Different launchers or profiles can use different directories, so a map copied into one profile’s saves folder will not necessarily appear in another profile.
5. Copy the extracted world folder into saves
Place the world folder directly inside the Java saves directory. Keep the folder intact; do not copy only a random subfolder from inside it. If you already have a world with the same folder name, rename the new folder before copying so you can distinguish the two entries.
6. Launch Java and check Singleplayer
Start the same Java profile whose game directory you used. Open the single-player world list and look for the map’s world name. If it appears, select it and load the world. If it does not appear, use the troubleshooting section below instead of repeatedly downloading the same archive.
7. Keep a clean copy of the original download
Retain the untouched archive or extracted copy until the map opens successfully. If you need to remove a partially copied folder or try a different supported version, you can work from the original rather than attempting to reconstruct it.

Import a Bedrock .mcworld file
Bedrock downloadable worlds commonly use the .mcworld extension. On a device that associates that extension with Minecraft, opening the file starts the import process. The exact file browser and confirmation screens differ by device, but the essential action is to open the file with Minecraft rather than placing it in Java’s save directory.
1. Verify that the file is a Bedrock world
Check the download description and filename. A .mcworld file is intended for Bedrock; it is not a Java archive. If the download instead contains a Java world folder or a compressed Java archive, follow the Java procedure.
2. Download the file without changing its extension
Save the complete filename, including .mcworld. Do not rename it to .zip or another extension as a first troubleshooting step; the extension is what allows many devices to associate the file with Minecraft.
3. Open the file from your device’s file manager or download list
Select the downloaded file. If the device has Minecraft associated with .mcworld, Minecraft should open and begin importing. When the system offers an “open with” choice, select Minecraft rather than a generic archive utility.
4. Wait for the import to finish
Leave Minecraft open while the import completes. Afterward, open the Bedrock play list and look for the imported world. The imported world is separate from any existing world with a similar name, so check the complete list if it is not at the top.

5. If nothing imports, check the association and edition
An .mcworld file may fail to launch Minecraft when the device has no association for that extension, when the file is incomplete, or when you are opening it on an installation that does not include Bedrock. Use the device’s “open with” control to select Minecraft, download the file again if it appears incomplete, and confirm that you are running Bedrock rather than Java.
Retrieve a Minecraft Marketplace world
Minecraft Marketplace is an expanding library of content made by community creator partners for Minecraft: Bedrock Edition. Its catalog includes community-created worlds, adventure maps, texture packs, and mash-up packs. Marketplace items are managed inside Bedrock rather than copied into Java’s saves folder.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Find purchased or otherwise available content
- Open Minecraft Bedrock and select Marketplace.
- Open My Library to see Marketplace content associated with your account.
- Select the world or pack you want to use.
- Choose the action Minecraft presents: Download, Create this World, or Equip.
The action depends on the type of content. A world may offer Create this World; a texture or mash-up pack may use Equip. If the item is listed in your library but has not been installed on the current device, use Download first.
Tell a world from a pack
A Marketplace world or adventure map creates a playable world. A texture pack changes visual assets, while a mash-up pack can combine visual and world content. If you selected Equip and cannot find a new world in the play list, you may have installed a pack rather than a standalone map.
Activate a Bedrock add-on in a world
An add-on is not automatically active in every Bedrock world after download. You must enable its Resource packs, Behavior packs, or both, for the particular world where you want the add-on to operate.
Best Value
Use an add-on in a new world
- Choose Play.
- Select Create new world.
- Open the Resource packs or Behavior packs section, depending on what the add-on provides.
- Find the add-on and activate it for the new world.
- Create the world and load it.
If the download supplies separate resource and behavior components, activate the component types included with that add-on. Activating a resource pack alone does not substitute for a required behavior pack, and the reverse is also true.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAdd an add-on to an existing world
- Open the Bedrock world list from Play.
- Select the pencil or edit control for the target world.
- Open Resource packs or Behavior packs.
- Activate the add-on for that world.
- Return to the world and play it.
Editing one world does not activate the add-on in other worlds. Repeat the process for each world that should use the content.
Activate an add-on on a Realm
For a Realm, open the Realm’s settings, select the relevant world slot, and activate the add-on’s Resource packs or Behavior packs there. Realm settings control the content used by that selected slot; enabling a pack in a local world does not enable it on the Realm.

The map is visible in the download folder but not in Java’s world list
- Recheck the edition. A Bedrock
.mcworldfile will not appear in Java Singleplayer. - Confirm that the archive was extracted. Java does not normally list a compressed archive as a playable world.
- Inspect the folder nesting. The actual world folder must be directly inside the Java
savesdirectory, not several levels below an outer download folder. - Verify that you used the game directory for the Java profile you launched. Launcher profiles can point to different directories.
- Check the map’s supported Minecraft version and launch a compatible Java version.
Opening a .mcworld file does nothing
- Confirm that the file still ends in
.mcworldand was not renamed during download. - Use the device’s open-with command and choose Minecraft manually if the extension is not associated automatically.
- Make sure the installed game includes Bedrock Edition; Java alone cannot import a Bedrock world.
- If the file appears incomplete, download it again before attempting another import.
A Marketplace item is missing
- Open Marketplace > My Library rather than searching only the general storefront.
- Check whether the item is a world, a texture pack, or a mash-up pack; each can expose a different action.
- Select the item and use the available Download, Create this World, or Equip control.
- Confirm that you are in Bedrock Edition, since Marketplace content is Bedrock content.
The add-on downloaded but has no effect
- Open the target world’s edit screen and verify that the add-on is active under the correct Resource packs or Behavior packs section.
- If the add-on is for a new world, create that world with the pack enabled; downloading alone does not activate it.
- For a Realm, check the Realm settings and the selected world slot rather than the settings of a local copy.
- If the add-on includes both resource and behavior components, check that each required component is active.
The map loads but behaves incorrectly
Start with the version requirement stated by the map creator. Java maps must match the supported Java version, and a world designed for one edition should not be evaluated as though it were interchangeable with the other. If you changed files while troubleshooting, remove the problematic copy and restore the untouched download before trying the supported setup again.
A practical pre-download checklist
- Is the download labeled Java or Bedrock?
- If it is Java, which Minecraft version does the map support?
- If it is Bedrock, is it a
.mcworld, a Marketplace world, or an add-on? - Is the required edition installed and launching successfully?
- For a Marketplace item, can you locate it under Marketplace > My Library?
- For an add-on, does the description identify Resource packs, Behavior packs, or both?
Fast decision guide
| If your download looks like this | Do this | Do not do this |
|---|---|---|
| Compressed archive containing a Java world | Extract it and copy the world folder into the Java saves directory |
Do not try to open the archive as a Bedrock import |
.mcworld file |
Open it with Minecraft on a Bedrock-capable device | Do not place it in Java’s saves directory |
| Marketplace listing | Use Marketplace > My Library and the item’s Download, Create this World, or Equip action | Do not search for a Java save folder |
| Bedrock add-on | Activate the supplied Resource packs or Behavior packs in the target world or Realm | Do not assume downloading enables it everywhere |
What to remember
The reliable installation path is determined by two choices: edition and content type. Java custom maps use an extracted-world-and-saves-folder workflow, while Bedrock uses .mcworld import, Marketplace library actions, or explicit pack activation in world settings. Checking those two choices before downloading prevents nearly every case of a map appearing to be missing.
