To download a PlayStation Plus Game Catalog game, sign in to the account with an eligible Extra or Premium membership, open PlayStation Plus, choose Game Catalog, select a title, and choose Download. On PS5, the path is Games home → PlayStation Plus → Benefits → Game Catalog. On PS4, open PlayStation Plus from the function screen, select Game Catalog, then choose the game and Download.
Premium members can choose Stream instead when a title supports cloud play. Streaming avoids a full installation, but it requires a broadband connection and does not support several console features and accessories. The game listing’s available button—Download, Stream, or both—is the quickest way to confirm what your account, region, and device can use.

What you need before downloading or streaming
PlayStation Plus access is divided into membership tiers. The Game Catalog starts with Extra; Premium includes the Game Catalog, adds the Classics Catalog, and enables streaming for many catalog titles. A title can still have platform, regional, or service-specific restrictions, so a membership by itself does not guarantee that every game will show every play option.

| Membership | Game Catalog | Classics Catalog | Cloud streaming |
|---|---|---|---|
| Extra | Included | Not included as part of the Extra tier | Not the Premium streaming entitlement |
| Premium | Included | Included | Available for many eligible Game Catalog and Classics Catalog games |
Use the account that actually owns the membership. If several people use the console, switching profiles can change which catalog buttons appear. Catalog contents and eligibility also vary by title and region; the listing for the individual game is the authoritative check.

Console and storage requirements for downloads
- A PS5 can download supported PS5 and PS4 catalog games. Sony states that PS5 games can only be downloaded to a PlayStation 5 console.
- A PS4 can download supported PS4 games. A PS5-only version will not become a downloadable PS4 installation simply because it appears in a catalog search.
- The console must have enough free storage for the selected installation, and the game must remain available to your account and region when you start the download.
- After installation, the game appears on the Games home screen or in Game Library.
What the game listing tells you
Open the title’s details before committing to an installation. A visible Download button confirms that the current account and device can install it. A visible Stream button indicates cloud play is available under the current entitlement and platform. If neither option appears, treat that as an eligibility or platform issue rather than a download failure.
How to download a Game Catalog game on PS5
The PS5 procedure uses the PlayStation Plus hub rather than a generic store search.
- Sign in to the PlayStation account that holds the eligible Extra or Premium membership.
- From the Games home screen, scroll right and select PlayStation Plus.
- Open the Benefits tab.
- Select Game Catalog.
- Choose an eligible game to open its listing, then select Download.
- Wait for the installation to finish. Launch the game from the Games home screen or from Game Library.
If the listing offers both choices, select Download for a local installation or Stream for immediate cloud play. The download button may be absent for a PS5 game when you are using a PS4; Sony’s platform rule is that PS5 games can only be downloaded to a PS5 console.

Where to find the installed game
Once the installation completes, the title is placed with your other games on the Games home screen. If it is not visible there, open Game Library and check the installed section. Selecting the title from either location starts the local version; it no longer needs to establish a cloud-streaming session.
How to download a Game Catalog game on PS4
On PS4, the catalog is reached from the function screen.
- Sign in to the PlayStation account with the eligible Extra or Premium membership.
- From the function screen, scroll right and select PlayStation Plus.
- Select Game Catalog.
- Highlight an eligible title and select Download.
- After installation, start the game from the PS4 content area or your Library.
If the title supports cloud play and the account has Premium, its listing may also show Stream. Choosing that option starts the game without installing the local files. A PS4 can therefore display a catalog title that is streamable even when the downloadable version is limited to another platform; rely on the buttons shown for that specific listing.

How to play without downloading: streaming
Streaming runs the game on Sony’s cloud service and sends the video and audio to your device while your controller input travels back to the service. It is useful when you want to start quickly or avoid using local storage. It is also more sensitive to the quality and consistency of your broadband connection than a locally installed game.
Who can stream
Cloud streaming requires the correct membership plan—Premium for the catalog streaming entitlement—and a title that supports streaming in your region. Sony describes supported streaming on PS5, PS4, and PC, but the exact catalog selection can differ by platform. On a PS5 or PS4, open the title in Game Catalog and choose Stream when that control is available.
Streaming steps on PS5
- Sign in to the Premium account.
- Open PlayStation Plus from the Games home screen.
- Choose Benefits, then Game Catalog.
- Select a game that displays Stream.
- Choose Stream instead of Download and wait for the cloud session to begin.
Streaming steps on PS4
- Sign in to the Premium account.
- From the function screen, open PlayStation Plus.
- Select Game Catalog.
- Open a title that offers Stream.
- Select Stream to start cloud play.
Broadband thresholds
| Use case | Published minimum | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Game Catalog streaming | 5 Mbps | Sony’s minimum broadband guidance for streaming; a stable connection is still needed for consistent play. |
| 1080p streaming | 15 Mbps | Applies when the game supports 1080p; it is not a promise that every title will stream at that resolution. |
These are Sony Interactive Entertainment’s current support thresholds, accessed in 2026. They are connection-speed minimums, not a guarantee of image quality or latency. Wi-Fi interference, household traffic, congestion between your provider and the service, and the performance of the device receiving the stream can all affect the result.
Download or stream: which method fits?
| Factor | Download | Stream |
|---|---|---|
| Where the game runs | Locally on the console after installation | On Sony’s cloud service, with video sent to the console or supported PC |
| Storage | Uses local console storage for the game files | Avoids a full local installation |
| Getting started | Requires the download and installation to finish | Can begin without waiting for a complete installation when a session is available |
| Network dependence during play | Primarily needed for account checks, updates, and online features; the installed game is not continuously dependent on streaming bandwidth | Requires a persistent broadband connection and is affected by speed, stability, and latency |
| Image stability | Rendered locally by the console, so it does not fluctuate with streaming congestion | Can change with network conditions; the published minimum does not guarantee a fixed visual result |
| Feature support | Uses the normal local-play feature set for the game and console | Broadcasting, Share Play, Share Screen, Remote Play, several camera and input accessories, and some controllers are unsupported |
| Best fit | Long sessions, limited or variable broadband, and players with enough storage | Trying a game quickly, conserving storage, or playing on a supported device without installing it |
Choose Download when the title is installable on your console and you have storage available. Choose Stream when you have Premium, the title offers cloud play, and your connection can sustain it. You can also stream first to test a game and download it later if the listing provides both options.
Streaming restrictions you should know
Cloud play is not identical to running a downloaded copy. Sony lists the following restrictions while a game is being streamed:
- Broadcasting is unavailable.
- Share Play is unavailable.
- Share Screen is unavailable.
- Remote Play is unavailable.
- HD Camera and PlayStation Camera features are unsupported.
- Mouse and keyboard input are unsupported.
- PlayStation VR and PlayStation Move are unsupported.
- Third-party controllers are unsupported.
- A queue may appear when cloud capacity is busy.
These restrictions matter for games that rely on motion controls, camera input, keyboard commands, or a broadcast workflow. If one of those features is essential, install the game locally when the Download option is offered instead of starting a stream.

Why a game will not show Download or Stream
The account has the wrong tier
Game Catalog access begins with Extra. Streaming requires the Premium entitlement in addition to a streamable title and a suitable connection. Confirm that the signed-in profile—not merely another profile on the console—holds the applicable membership.
The title is not eligible in your region or has changed catalog status
Catalog contents are not universal. Availability can differ by country or region and by the individual title. A game can disappear from a catalog, appear with a different platform version, or offer only one of the two play methods. Check the current listing rather than relying on an older announcement, search result, or a friend’s console.
The device does not support that installation
Sony’s explicit platform distinction is that PS5 games can only be downloaded to a PS5 console. If you are on PS4 and the listing identifies a PS5 version, the absence of Download is expected. A stream may still be offered when the title and account support it; the listing determines that outcome.
The title supports download but not cloud play
Premium does not turn every catalog game into a streamable game. Some listings show only Download. In that case, install the supported version on the supported console.
A cloud session is queued
A queue is a service-capacity condition, not proof that the game is missing from your membership. You can wait for the session, or use Download if the title offers it and you prefer local play.
Troubleshooting a failed or missing download
- Verify the profile: Sign out of any unintended profile and sign in to the account with Extra or Premium.
- Recheck the listing: Return to PlayStation Plus → Game Catalog and open the game again. Confirm that Download is actually displayed for your device.
- Check storage: Free enough local space for the installation. A title can be catalog-eligible yet unable to install when the drive is full.
- Check the network: A download needs a working connection to retrieve the files. If the connection drops, retry after it stabilizes.
- Confirm the platform version: Do not select a PS5-only version while using a PS4. Look for a PS4-compatible listing if one exists.
- Try the alternate method: If both controls are available, stream while investigating a slow download, or download after a queued stream session.
- Restart the path: Close the listing, reopen PlayStation Plus, and select the title again. This refreshes the displayed entitlement and current catalog state without changing the membership.
If the button remains absent after these checks, the most likely explanation is that the title, region, platform, or membership does not meet the catalog’s current rules. Sony’s support guidance describes the required membership as a prerequisite for both downloading and streaming.
How to choose the right version and play method
Choose a download when
- You want the most consistent image and input response available from your console.
- Your broadband connection is below the published streaming threshold or is shared heavily.
- You need broadcasting, Share Play, Share Screen, Remote Play, a camera, keyboard, mouse, PSVR, PlayStation Move, or a third-party controller.
- You have enough storage and can wait for installation.
Choose streaming when
- You have Premium and the listing visibly offers Stream.
- You want to start before a full installation completes.
- You are conserving local storage.
- Your connection can sustain the service, with at least 5 Mbps for streaming and at least 15 Mbps for 1080p when the game supports 1080p.
- You do not need the streaming-restricted features.
Use the listing as the final decision point
Membership pages describe what a tier generally includes, but the individual game page resolves the practical questions: whether the title is currently in the catalog, whether your region can access it, which console version is available, and whether the service offers Download, Stream, or both. Check that page immediately before starting play, especially when moving between PS4, PS5, and PC.
