Download the free Bedrock Dedicated Server from Minecraft’s official server page, extract it into a dedicated folder, launch it once to create the server files and world, allow UDP 19132 (IPv4) and 19133 (IPv6), then add the server’s address in a Bedrock client running the same version. Windows, Android and iOS can normally enter an address directly; console connection options are more limited.

What you are downloading
Bedrock Dedicated Server is Mojang’s free server program for Minecraft: Bedrock Edition. It is a different download from the Java Edition server, and a Java server cannot host a Bedrock client world. The official download page publishes Windows and Linux builds, including separate release and preview channels. Choose the release build unless every player intentionally uses the matching preview client.

Check the host computer first
The official download page currently lists these minimums; its labels and supported versions can change, so check the live page immediately before installing.

Do not treat the memory figures as a player guarantee. Simulation distance, view distance, add-ons, redstone activity and the number of simultaneously loaded chunks can change usage. If the host starts paging to disk or players see frequent pauses, reduce view distance or move the server to a machine with more available memory.
Download the matching Bedrock server build
- Open the official Bedrock Dedicated Server download page.
- Choose the Windows or Linux package for the operating system that will remain online as the host.
- Select the release channel that matches the clients. Use a preview package only when every player is using the corresponding preview Bedrock version.
- Save the archive locally and keep its version information. If Mojang publishes a newer build later, update the server and clients together rather than mixing versions.
The server is free to download. You do not need a physical product in addition to the host computer and a Bedrock client for each player.

Windows installation
- Create a folder dedicated to the server, such as
C:MinecraftServer. Do not run it from Downloads; the executable will create configuration files, worlds and packs beside itself. - Extract every file from the downloaded archive into that folder. Keep the executable and its supporting files together.
- Open
server.propertiesin a plain-text editor before the first real session. Set the server name, maximum players and preferred game mode, then review difficulty, view distance, cheats and the default player permission level. - Double-click
bedrock_server.exeor run it from a terminal opened in the server folder. The first launch creates the remaining folders and a default world. - After generation finishes, stop the process with
Ctrl+C. This gives you a clean point at which to confirm settings, create a backup and configure the firewall.
Linux installation
- Create a directory owned by the account that will run the server and extract the archive there.
- From that directory, make the downloaded binary executable, for example
chmod +x bedrock_server. - Run it once with
./bedrock_server. The initial run writesserver.properties, the world directory and other first-run files. - Stop it with
Ctrl+C, inspect the generated files, and then start it again for normal play. Keep the process running in a terminal multiplexer or service only after you have confirmed that a foreground launch works.
The exact shell environment and service manager are operating-system choices; the important first-run sequence is to execute the binary once, let it generate its files, and stop it cleanly before changing settings.

Set the important server.properties values
Open the file with a text editor while the server is stopped. Each setting is written as name=value. The following are the fields worth checking before inviting anyone:

Save the file, then launch the server again. If the console reports that a port is already in use, stop the other process or choose a different port and use that same number in the client’s port field and any router rule.
Allow players through the network
Playing on the same computer or home network
For a test on the host itself, add localhost or 127.0.0.1 with port 19132. Another device on the same home network should use the host computer’s private IPv4 address, such as an address beginning with 192.168. or 10., together with the configured port. The exact private address is assigned by your router and is not the public address friends use from the internet.

Allowing internet players
- Give the host computer a stable private address on the home network, either by a router reservation or an equivalent local-network method.
- In the computer’s firewall, allow inbound UDP traffic for the Bedrock server executable or for the configured server port. Bedrock’s defaults are UDP 19132 for IPv4 and UDP 19133 for IPv6; these are not TCP ports.
- On the router, forward the chosen UDP port to the host’s private address. Forward IPv4 19132 for the default IPv4 setup; configure IPv6 19133 only when your network and players use IPv6.
- Give remote players the current public address and the port. A public address can change when the internet connection reconnects, so tell players when it changes.
- Test from a connection outside your home network, such as a phone using cellular data. Testing only from inside the same router can hide a forwarding error.
Expose only the port you need and keep the server software and operating system updated. If your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, ordinary router forwarding may not be sufficient; ask the provider whether inbound connections are available before changing server settings.
Running more than one Bedrock server
Each server needs its own port and its own folder. A Minecraft Wiki setup note reports a startup-order quirk: start the server intended for the default port 19132 first, because a server launched on another port can take 19132 from a later server. If you do not need multiple instances, leave both port settings at their defaults.
Join the server from Bedrock Edition
Windows, Android and iOS
- Start the server and leave its console running.
- Open Minecraft: Bedrock Edition on a client with the same release or preview version as the server.
- Open Play, then the Servers tab. Where the platform exposes it, choose Add Server.
- Enter a recognizable server name, the host’s IP address or DNS name, and the UDP port configured in
server.properties. Use127.0.0.1orlocalhostonly when the client and server are on the same computer. - Save the entry and select it. The first connection may take longer while the world is prepared.
For a device on the same home network, use the host’s private address. For a friend outside the home, use the public address and the forwarded port. Do not send a private address to an internet player; it is meaningful only inside your local network.

Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch
Third-party Bedrock setup guides report that these consoles do not provide the same custom-IP entry box available on Windows, Android and iOS. The limitation is not confirmed by an official Mojang page in the material available here, so the exact menu can vary by console version. If your console does not expose an address field, use the platform’s supported multiplayer or LAN-discovery route, or have a Windows, Android or iOS player test the server first. Do not assume that a successful PC connection means a console can enter the same address manually.

The first successful launch creates a default Bedrock world in the server directory. The same dedicated folder holds the worlds, packs and server.properties, which is why installing in a permanent location matters. Keep the server folder intact when upgrading or moving the host.
Make a safe backup
- Tell players to leave and stop the server with
Ctrl+Cso no files are being written. - Copy the complete server folder, or at minimum the world directory plus your configuration and packs, to a separate disk.
- Label the backup with the server version and date.
- Restart the server and have one player confirm that the world loads before inviting the full group.
Never copy or replace world files while the server is actively saving. A backup made from a running process can be incomplete and may not restore cleanly.

Using an existing Bedrock world
The dedicated server’s first launch is the supported point for creating its folder structure and verifying that the binary works. If you intend to bring an existing world, stop the server first and preserve the generated files as a backup. World-import details and folder naming can change between Bedrock server builds; verify the current instructions for the exact release you downloaded rather than guessing at a path or renaming files while the process is running.

The client says the server is outdated or incompatible
- Check the server build number and the client’s version in the game’s title or settings screen.
- Confirm that neither side is on Preview while the other is on the full release.
- Update every player and the server to the same channel and version, then restart the server.
The server starts but nobody can connect
- From the host, try
localhostor127.0.0.1on port 19132. If this fails, fix the server process or local firewall before testing the router. - From another device at home, use the host’s private IP. A failure here usually indicates a host firewall rule, the wrong private address or a different configured port.
- For an internet player, confirm that the router forwards UDP, not only TCP, and that it forwards to the correct host address.
- Check that the player is using the current public address and the same port shown in
server.properties.
The server window closes immediately
- Run the executable from a terminal so you can read the error instead of double-clicking it.
- On Linux, verify that the binary is executable and that you launched it from the extracted directory.
- Confirm that the operating system meets the official support line: Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or later for Linux, or Windows 10 version 10.0.15063 or later or Windows Server 2016 or later.
- Check that another server is not already using the configured UDP port.
Players can connect but the world lags
- Lower
view-distanceand reduce the player cap. - Close other programs competing for CPU, memory or disk bandwidth.
- Use the 4 GB official minimum as a floor, not a performance promise; a group of five to 10 players may need around 8 GB according to third-party guidance.
- Back up and inspect add-ons or packs if the slowdown began immediately after adding them.
Version and transport changes to watch
A Minecraft Wiki protocol page describes Bedrock as using NetherNet, a WebRTC-based transport, alongside legacy RakNet. It labels NetherNet as the dedicated-server default in version 26.50 and RakNet as deprecated in preview 26.60.22. Those version labels were not verified against Mojang release notes here, so treat them as provisional rather than as a reason to change your setup. The practical connection guidance remains the UDP ports configured by the server and a client/server version match.
