To download a game on a Windows 11 laptop, first check the game’s hardware requirements and your available storage. Then use an official source—such as Microsoft Store, Steam, Epic Games Store, the Xbox PC app, or the publisher’s official launcher—to purchase, claim, and install it. The launcher you install is usually only the distribution tool; you must still download the individual game inside it.
Before downloading a game
Windows 11 does not automatically mean that every PC game will run on your laptop. Check the specific game’s minimum and recommended requirements before downloading.

Check your laptop’s specifications
- Open Start > Settings > System > About to view your Windows edition, processor and installed RAM.
- Open Settings > System > Storage to check free space.
- Press Windows + R, type
dxdiag, and press Enter. Review the System and Display tabs for DirectX and graphics information.
Compare your CPU, RAM, graphics processor, video memory, DirectX support, Windows version and free storage with the requirements listed on the game’s official store page. Meeting the minimum may allow a game to start but still result in low frame rates, long loading times or reduced graphics quality.
Remember that a game’s download size may differ from its installed size. Installation and updates can also require temporary space. Keep the laptop plugged in during a large download, and prevent it from going to sleep if the launcher pauses when the lid is closed.

Where to download Windows 11 games

Method 1: Download a game from Microsoft Store
- Open Start and select Microsoft Store.
- Select Gaming, or search for the game.
- Open the game’s listing and select Get, Buy or the available install control.
- Sign in with the required Microsoft account and complete payment if necessary.
- Select Install or the download icon.
- Wait for installation to finish, then select Play. You can also open the game from the Start menu or Windows Search.
To find previously acquired games, open Microsoft Store and select your account picture or More info, then My Library. Microsoft documents this process in its Microsoft Store installation guide.
A game may be unavailable because of its country or region, family settings, account mismatch, removal from the catalog, device incompatibility or a pending Windows restart.
Method 2: Download a game with Steam
- Visit Steam’s official website and select Install Steam.
- Run the downloaded Windows installer and follow the setup prompts.
- Open Steam and create an account or sign in.
- Search for the game and open its store page.
- Buy the game, or select the free-play or install option when applicable.
- Open Library, select the game and choose Install.
- Choose a Steam library or installation drive if prompted, then confirm.
- When the download and installation finish, select Play.
Steam’s store page is the best place to check requirements for that particular game. Some Steam games also require a separate publisher account or launcher.

- Download Epic Games Launcher from Epic’s official launcher page.
- Run the installer and complete setup.
- Open the launcher and sign in or create an Epic Games account.
- Find the game, then purchase it or claim it if it is offered free.
- Open Library, select the game and choose Install.
- Choose an installation folder if prompted and accept the available options.
- Wait for completion, then select the game’s icon and choose Launch.
Epic supports Windows 11, but each game has separate requirements. If Epic reports that your operating system is unsupported despite Windows 11 being installed, use Epic’s official troubleshooting guidance rather than downloading a third-party “fix.”
Method 4: Install games through the Xbox PC app or PC Game Pass
The Xbox PC app provides access to PC games and PC Game Pass content. Xbox currently lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 version 22H2 or later among the app requirements; individual games need their own hardware specifications. Windows S mode may need to be exited before some Xbox PC games can be played.
- Open the Xbox PC page or Microsoft Store.
- Install or open the Xbox app.
- Install any requested Gaming Services components.
- Sign in with a Microsoft account.
- Browse PC Game Pass or search for a game.
- Open the game page and select Install.
- Choose the installation drive or folder if the app offers that choice.
- Wait for completion, then select Play.
PC Game Pass is a subscription rather than permanent ownership. Its catalog, plan terms, features, regions and available games can change. Check the current PC Game Pass page and the individual game listing.
Method 5: Install a game from the publisher’s official website
- Identify the publisher using the game’s official website or a reputable store listing.
- Type the publisher’s official domain directly into your browser.
- Download its launcher, if one is required.
- Install the launcher and sign in or create the necessary account.
- Buy, redeem or select the game, then choose Install.
- Choose an installation location if available and launch the game when setup finishes.
Do not use torrent indexes, cracked versions, “free full version” sites, unofficial mirrors or random executable files. Search results can include fake launcher pages and deceptive download buttons.

Choosing the installation location
If your laptop has more than one drive, install large games on a drive with sufficient free space. An SSD generally provides faster loading than a hard disk drive, but it does not compensate for a graphics processor that is below the game’s requirements.
Leave headroom for updates, temporary installation files, save data and additional content. Use Settings > System > Storage to remove temporary files carefully or uninstall games you no longer use. Steam and Epic normally let you choose a library or folder. Microsoft Store games may use protected folders; do not manually move or modify those folders. Use the Store or Windows storage controls instead.

Microsoft Store will not open
- Restart Windows and install pending updates.
- Open Microsoft Store and select Library > Get updates.
- Press Windows + R, enter
wsreset.exe, and press Enter. - Wait for the command window to close and the Store to reopen.
- If necessary, repair or reset Microsoft Store in its Windows app settings.

The game cannot be found
Check that you are using the correct account and that the game is available in your region. Family controls, age restrictions, device incompatibility, catalog removal or a required publisher launcher can also explain why a title does not appear.
The download is stuck or fails
- Check the internet connection and available storage.
- Pause and resume the download.
- Restart the launcher and then restart Windows.
- Install pending Windows updates.
- Check whether a VPN, proxy, metered connection or security software is interfering.
- Try another drive if the selected drive is full or has permission problems.
- Use the launcher’s verify, repair or reinstall function.
- Search the platform’s official support page for the exact error code.
There is not enough space
The listed game size may not include temporary files and updates. Remove temporary files, uninstall unused games or move compatible games to another internal drive. Avoid filling the system drive to its limit.
The game installs but will not launch
Recheck the game’s requirements, install Windows and graphics-driver updates from the laptop or GPU manufacturer, and confirm whether another account or launcher is required. Check whether antivirus software quarantined a file, whether Windows S mode is restricting the game, and whether a restart is needed. Never download random DLL files from the web.
The game runs poorly
Installation and performance are different problems. Try a lower resolution, low or medium graphics settings, disabled ray tracing, a frame-rate limit and fewer background applications. Keep the laptop plugged in and use its manufacturer performance mode when appropriate. Installing on an SSD can improve loading times, but extra RAM or storage will not fix a fundamentally weak GPU.

Buy games individually or use PC Game Pass?
Buying a game from Steam, Microsoft Store, Epic or a publisher is usually better if you plan to play one or two titles for a long time and want continued access without a subscription. A subscription such as PC Game Pass can make sense if you regularly try several games and accept that its catalog rotates.

Neither option removes hardware requirements, and a subscription does not guarantee that every Xbox console game is available for local PC installation. Compare the current catalog, platform compatibility, regional availability and terms before subscribing.
Download safely
- Use Microsoft Store, Steam, Epic, Xbox or the game publisher’s official domain.
- Check the web address before downloading a launcher or entering payment details.
- Do not disable antivirus protection or grant permanent administrator access because an unofficial site requests it.
- Use a unique password and enable multifactor authentication where available. Epic recommends two-factor authentication for account security.
- Keep Windows, the launcher and graphics drivers updated.
