Yes—you can still download games on a PS3 in the United States. As of August 18, 2026, you can buy available digital PS3 games, redeem legitimate vouchers, download DLC, and redownload many games you already own. However, Sony no longer accepts credit cards, debit cards, or PayPal directly on the PS3. New purchases require funds in your PlayStation wallet, added elsewhere or through a PlayStation Store gift card.
Sony currently plans to end new PS3 Store purchases in the United States and other applicable regions in July 2027. Previously purchased content is expected to remain downloadable for the foreseeable future, although Sony notes that some content may not be eligible for redownload.

Current PS3 Store status
U.S. status: PS3 digital downloads still work, but new purchases require wallet funds added outside the console. Sony plans to end PS3 Store purchasing in July 2027. Existing purchases are expected to remain downloadable for the foreseeable future.
The closure date depends on the account region. Sony says PS3 Store purchasing begins closing in Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua in August 2026, with additional Latin American and Middle Eastern markets following later in 2026. The U.S. is listed among the regions scheduled for closure in July 2027. Check Sony’s current PlayStation Store notice for regional changes.

After purchasing closes in a region, you should still be able to download previously purchased content for the foreseeable future. That does not guarantee that every item will always be redownloadable, nor does it mean the game’s multiplayer servers or other online features remain active.
What you can download on PS3
- New digital PS3 games that are still listed in your region’s PS3 Store.
- Free games, demos, and promotional content where available.
- Games previously purchased or redeemed by the signed-in account.
- Legitimate game and product vouchers.
- DLC and other add-ons, subject to availability and region compatibility.
- Some PSP or PS Vita-related content historically offered through the PS3 Store, where the listing confirms compatibility.
- Game updates, when the game or publisher still provides them.
A game bought on another PlayStation device is not automatically guaranteed to work on PS3. Check the Store listing for platform compatibility. Sony’s PS3 user guide explains that Store content can be platform-specific.
What you need before starting
- A PS3 connected to the internet.
- A PlayStation Network account that can sign in on PS3.
- The correct account country or region.
- A Device Setup Password if the console requests one.
- Enough PlayStation wallet funds for a new purchase.
- Enough free hard-drive space for the game and its installation.
- A stable connection; wired Ethernet is preferable for large downloads but is not required.
- Up-to-date PS3 system software if the Store prompts you to update.
Sign in with a Device Setup Password
For PS3 sign-in, your ordinary PlayStation account password may not work. Sony requires a device setup password for PS3 devices.
- On a phone or computer, sign in to PlayStation Account Management.
- Open the account-security or device-management section. Labels can vary by region and may change.
- Generate a device setup password.
- On the PS3, enter your PlayStation sign-in ID and the generated password instead of your normal account password.
Treat this as a device sign-in password, not as a replacement for your normal account password.
Method 1: Buy and download a new PS3 game
1. Add money to your PlayStation wallet
You cannot directly add wallet funds on PS3 with a credit card, debit card, or PayPal. Instead, add funds through a supported account-management route on another device, use another supported PlayStation device, or redeem a PlayStation Store gift card or voucher.
A stored payment card on your account is not the same as wallet balance. Before purchasing on PS3, make sure the wallet itself contains enough money. See Sony’s payment and Store notice for the current rules.

2. Open the PS3 Store
- Turn on the PS3 and sign in to the account that should own the game.
- From the XMB, select PlayStation Network.
- Open PlayStation Store.
3. Find and check the game
Confirm that the listing identifies the game as compatible with PS3. Also check the region, edition, file size, required storage, and whether DLC or bonus content is included. Store labels and navigation can differ by country.
4. Purchase and start the download
- Select the purchase option and confirm it.
- Follow the on-screen download prompt.
- If the download does not begin, open View Downloads or Download List and select the purchased item.
- Allow the download and installation to finish.
- Find the installed game in the PS3’s Game column.
For a large download, avoid shutting down the console or interrupting the connection. Keep the confirmation email or transaction record in case you need to troubleshoot the purchase.

Method 2: Redownload a game you already own
This is the most useful method for many returning PS3 owners. You must use the PlayStation Network account that originally purchased or redeemed the game.
- Sign in to that original account on the PS3.
- Open PlayStation Network > PlayStation Store.
- Select View Downloads or Download List.
- Find the game.
- Select its download option.
- Wait for the download and installation to complete.
- Launch it from the PS3’s Game column.
Sony identifies the Store’s View Downloads/Download List as the location for previously purchased content. A game bought on another account will normally not appear in your current account’s list.
If a title was delisted, it may still be available to its original owner, but delisting does not guarantee redownload access. Sony’s manual also notes that some content may not be redownloadable.
Method 3: Redeem a PS3 game code
Do not confuse a product voucher with a discount code. A PlayStation Store game or product voucher generally has 12 digits. A 10-digit code is generally a discount code and is not interchangeable with a game voucher.

Codes are restricted to the account’s country or region, can normally be used only once, and cannot be transferred between accounts. Use Sony’s voucher-code guidance for the code type and region.
- Redeem the voucher through the supported PlayStation Store or account route available for that code and region.
- Sign in on the PS3 with the same account.
- Open PlayStation Network > PlayStation Store.
- Open View Downloads or Download List.
- Select the redeemed game and begin the download.
How to download PS3 DLC
DLC bought from the PS3 Store
- Sign in with the account that will own the add-on.
- Open the PS3 Store and locate the game or DLC.
- Purchase it using wallet funds.
- Download it from the purchase prompt or Download List.
DLC bought through an in-game store
In-game-store purchases on PS3 can continue where the game and service support them, but payment must come from wallet funds. Credit cards, debit cards, and PayPal cannot be used directly on PS3 for the transaction.
For DLC that installs but does not appear, check all of the following:
- The DLC matches the base game’s country or region.
- The correct edition of the base game is installed.
- The base game itself is installed.
- The add-on appears under the game’s add-on or content-data area.
- The game has been restarted after installation.
- Any required game update has installed.
Not every PS3 add-on remains purchasable or downloadable, and online services differ by publisher.

- Check storage. Delete old installations, demos, videos, or unused games if necessary. Back up saves first. Do not confuse removable game data with saved data: deleting saved data can remove your progress.
- Check the account. Use the account that bought or redeemed the content.
- Check the transaction. Confirm that the purchase completed and that the wallet was charged.
- Open Download List again. Restart the item from View Downloads or Download List.
- Pause and resume. If the interface provides the option, pause the download and resume it.
- Restart the console and router. A wired connection can improve reliability for large files.
- Check service availability. A temporary PlayStation Network or Store outage can prevent downloads.
- Update system software. The PS3 Store may require a system-software update.
- Try again later. A less congested period may help with a stalled transfer.
- Contact PlayStation Support. Provide the title, account region, transaction details, and exact error message. Sony’s download troubleshooting page mainly covers newer consoles, so do not assume every menu path applies to PS3.
If the game is missing from Download List
Check these possibilities in order:
- You are signed in to a different PlayStation Network account.
- The transaction did not complete.
- The game was purchased on a different regional account.
- The item is listed as DLC, a bundle, or an add-on rather than a full game.
- The account is suspended or restricted.
- The title was removed from redownload eligibility.
- The content is not compatible with PS3.
- The game was delisted and is no longer available for new purchase or redownload.
Check the account’s transaction history before assuming the purchase disappeared. A PS3 game can remain downloadable while its online multiplayer or other network features have ended.
Region, vouchers, and compatibility warnings
- PS3 Store content varies by country and region.
- A voucher normally must match the account’s region.
- DLC from one region may not work with a disc or digital game from another region.
- A PS3 purchase should not be assumed to include a PS4 or PS5 version.
- A title compatible with PS3 is not necessarily compatible with another PlayStation system.
- Remote-download instructions for PS4 and PS5 do not apply to PS3. The modern PlayStation App workflow is not a supported substitute for opening the PS3 Store on the console.
Changing regions, using a VPN, or altering DNS settings is not a reliable or recommended way to restore Store access and can create account, voucher, or licensing problems.

What happens after the PS3 Store closes?
In regions covered by Sony’s schedule, new PS3 Store purchases will stop when the regional closure takes effect. Sony says previously purchased content will remain downloadable for the foreseeable future, but its wording does not promise unlimited access to every individual item. Availability can also be affected by licensing, compatibility, and publisher services.
If you want a digital title that is still available, purchasing it before the applicable regional deadline avoids relying on future Store availability. Do not assume that buying it on PS4 or PS5 creates a PS3 entitlement.

Official alternatives
After digital purchasing closes—or when a game is not available digitally—the legitimate alternatives are a used or previously owned physical PS3 disc, or an account-linked purchase that remains available through the official Store. Avoid unauthorized copies, license bypasses, unofficial package files, torrents, and DRM-circumvention methods. Besides being outside the official download process, they can expose the console or account to malware and loss of access.

Why does PS3 require a device setup password?
Sony uses a device setup password for PS3 sign-in instead of your ordinary PlayStation account password. Generate one through Account Management.
Can I download PS3 games remotely from the PlayStation App?
