Quick answer: install Minecraft on a Mac
- Check that your Mac meets the current Java Edition requirements.
- Open the official Minecraft download page for Mac.
- Download and install Minecraft Launcher.
- Open the launcher and sign in with your Microsoft account.
- Select Minecraft: Java Edition.
- Choose the current release and select Install, Play, or the equivalent download button shown in your launcher.
- Wait for the game files to download, then launch Minecraft.
The launcher download and the game installation are separate steps: downloading the launcher does not by itself install the full game.

Before you download
- macOS: macOS 12 or newer is the current minimum target. macOS 14 or newer is recommended.
- Account: You need a Microsoft account.
- Ownership: A purchase linked to that Microsoft account is generally required for the full game.
- Internet: You need an internet connection to download the launcher and game, sign in, and receive updates.
- Storage: Minecraft lists 2 GB minimum and 4 GB recommended for Java Edition. Leave substantially more free space for updates, worlds, logs, mods, and other content.
To check your Mac, open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac. On newer versions of macOS, use System Settings > General > About. Check the macOS version, processor or chip, memory, and available storage, then compare them with the official requirements.
Download the official Minecraft Launcher
- Open the official Minecraft Mac download page.
- Confirm that the page is set to Mac.
- Select Download Launcher.
- Open the downloaded installer, usually from your Downloads folder.
- Follow the macOS installation prompts.
- Open Minecraft Launcher from Applications or Spotlight.
If macOS shows a security warning, verify that the installer came from the official Minecraft/Microsoft website before approving it. Do not disable Gatekeeper globally or use a cracked launcher, mirror, or “free Minecraft” installer.

Install Minecraft: Java Edition
- Open Minecraft Launcher.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns Minecraft.
- Use the game selector to choose Minecraft: Java Edition.
- Select the current release, or another available installation if you have a specific version in mind.
- Click Install, Play, or the current equivalent button.
- Allow the launcher to download the game files.
- Click Play after installation finishes.
The launcher may download additional files during the first launch, create its settings and save folders, and take longer to start than it does later. You do not normally need to install Java separately for the standard official launcher.
Launcher labels and layout can change. The durable sequence is: sign in, choose Java Edition, select a release, install, and play.
Do you have to buy Minecraft for Mac?
A new player generally needs to buy Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC through Minecraft.net or Microsoft/Xbox. The PC purchase includes Java Edition for macOS and Linux and Bedrock Edition for Windows.

The launcher itself can be downloaded without buying the game, but downloading it does not provide unrestricted access to the full game. Demo or trial options may be available for some accounts and can change over time; check the official Minecraft account or launcher rather than relying on an old offer.
Already bought Minecraft on another computer?
You normally do not need to buy it again when moving from a Windows PC to a Mac. Download the launcher, sign in with the same Microsoft account used for the original purchase, and check the launcher library for Java Edition. Ownership follows the Microsoft account, not the computer.

The bundle includes both PC editions, but that does not mean both editions run natively on every operating system. On a Mac, the normal official installation is Java Edition.
Mac requirements for Minecraft Java Edition in 2026
Minecraft updated its Java requirements on July 21, 2026. These are targets rather than a guarantee for every Mac model.

Minimum target
- Operating system: macOS 12 or newer
- Architecture: x64 or ARM64
- Memory: 8 GB with a discrete GPU, or 12 GB with integrated graphics
- Processor: Four physical cores; listed examples include Intel Core i3-10100, AMD Ryzen 3 3100, Qualcomm Snapdragon X, or Apple M1
- Graphics: Vulkan 1.3-capable graphics with at least 2 GB of VRAM, or supported Apple M1-or-newer graphics
- Performance target: 1080p at 30 frames per second on the Fast preset
Recommended target
- Operating system: macOS 14 or newer
- Memory: 16 GB
- Processor: Examples include Intel Core i5-12400, AMD Ryzen 5 5600, or Apple M2 Pro
- Graphics: A more capable GPU, including Apple M2 Pro or applicable discrete-GPU configurations with 6 GB VRAM
- Performance target: 1080p at 60 frames per second on the Fancy preset
Older Intel Macs may still launch Minecraft while falling below the current minimum, but performance is not guaranteed. Minecraft warns that below-specification systems could stop launching in the future, particularly as Java moves away from OpenGL toward Vulkan. Read the official requirements announcement and current requirements table before relying on an older Mac.
Can Mac players play with friends?
Yes, but the editions must match. Java Edition on Mac can play with Java Edition players on Windows and Linux. It cannot normally join a Bedrock-only world or Realm on Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, mobile, or Windows Bedrock.

Troubleshooting Minecraft on Mac
The launcher will not open
- Restart the Mac.
- Confirm that the Mac meets the current macOS requirement.
- Download the latest launcher again from the official Minecraft download page.
- Update macOS where practical.
- Remove and reinstall the launcher if its installation is damaged.
- Review Minecraft’s official troubleshooting guidance or contact Minecraft Support if the problem continues.
The launcher says “Buy Now” after you purchased Minecraft
The most common cause is signing in with a different Microsoft account. Sign out, sign back in with the account used for the purchase, and check Minecraft.net > Account > My Games. Also confirm that you are viewing Java Edition. Do not buy the game again until account ownership is confirmed.

macOS blocks the installer
Verify the installer’s source and publisher before allowing it. If it did not come from Minecraft.net or Microsoft, cancel the installation and obtain the launcher from the official download page. Do not disable macOS security controls for an unverified file.
The game crashes or runs slowly
- Compare the Mac with the updated 2026 minimum requirements.
- Install macOS and the launcher updates that are available.
- Close unnecessary applications and check free storage.
- Lower render distance, graphics quality, and simulation distance.
- Review allocated memory rather than automatically assigning all available RAM.
- Temporarily remove third-party mods, shaders, resource packs, custom profiles, and custom Java arguments.
Older Intel graphics and systems below the minimum may simply be unable to deliver stable performance. The official requirements are the best starting point for deciding whether the problem is configuration or hardware.
Multiplayer does not work
Check the edition first. A Mac Java player needs a Java-compatible server or Realm and cannot normally join a Bedrock-only world. If the editions match, then check the server address, account sign-in, internet connection, and any server-specific requirements.
My controller does not work
Java Edition does not currently provide native controller support according to Minecraft’s official product FAQ. Third-party controller-mapping software or mods may work, but they are optional, unsupported additions and can introduce compatibility problems.

Reinstall Minecraft without losing worlds
Reinstalling the launcher or game is not automatically the same as deleting saved worlds, but back up your worlds before changing launchers, editing files, or removing application data.
- Locate the Java Edition saves folder for the launcher profile you use.
- Copy the world folder to a separate drive or cloud-storage location.
- Reinstall or repair the launcher.
- Launch the correct Java profile once, then restore the backup only after confirming the destination profile.
The default data location is commonly inside the user Library’s application-support area, but launcher profiles can use different directories. In Finder, use Go > Go to Folder rather than assuming the Library folder is visible. Do not delete the entire Minecraft application-support folder as a first troubleshooting step.
Optional multiplayer subscription
You do not need Realms for single-player, LAN play, or joining someone else’s Realm. If you want a private, always-online Java server without configuring one yourself, the official Realms page listed Java Realms at $7.99 USD per month when checked in August 2026. Prices and availability can vary by region and change over time. Realms does not bridge Java and Bedrock players.
