Minecraft’s official Character Creator FAQ says, “We do not have plans for importing custom skins on consoles,” so downloading a personal skin PNG from a website and uploading it is not a supported Switch method.

Browse or search for a skin or skin pack. Minecraft says the Marketplace includes free skins as well as skins for purchase, so check the item page for its price and availability.

Open the item and follow its in-game prompts to acquire or download it. If you already own the content, or it is available to you through Marketplace Pass, go to Marketplace > My Library, select it, and choose the available action, such as Download or Equip. Return to the title screen and open Dressing Room. Select the skin or character content you want to wear and equip it.
Menu wording can change with game updates. If an item is missing, confirm you are signed into the account that owns it and check My Library. After a purchase, restarting Minecraft may help newly acquired content or a Minecoins balance appear.

Choose between a skin pack and Character Creator

Minecraft’s Character Creator FAQ and character customization guide describe these options. The Switch game is the Bedrock Edition version; instructions for uploading a skin image in Java Edition do not establish that the same upload route works on Switch.
Can you download and upload your own skin file?
Not through a supported Switch import process documented by Minecraft. The official Character Creator FAQ states, “We do not have plans for importing custom skins on consoles.” The FAQ does not show a revision date, so this is the official guidance available in that document, not a claim that Minecraft made a new announcement in 2026. Use Marketplace content or Character Creator instead of following a website’s PNG upload steps.

Do you need Minecoins?
No. Minecoins are virtual currency used for Marketplace purchases, but Minecraft also offers free skins. Check the individual item page before acquiring content; a Minecoins purchase is not required for every skin. Minecraft’s Minecoins information lists Nintendo as a compatible platform and explains their Marketplace use.
