To download a mod into Vortex, open the mod page for your game on Nexus Mods and choose Mod manager download. First install Vortex, select the game you want to mod, and sign in. If you already have the mod file on your computer, you can add it through Vortex’s Drop File(s) area instead.
Before you download a mod
Get Vortex from the official Nexus Mods Vortex page, then set up the game you intend to mod in the app. Vortex supports multiple games, but a mod is made for a particular game; check the mod page and follow any game- or mod-specific requirements rather than assuming every mod works with every title. Nexus Mods describes Vortex’s game support and profiles in its Vortex overview.
Download a mod directly into Vortex
- Open Vortex and sign in. The Vortex fundamentals guide says you must be logged in to use Nexus Mods manager downloads.
- Open the mod page for the game you set up. Check that the page is for the correct game and read its installation notes.
- Choose Mod manager download. This sends the mod through the Nexus Mods manager-link workflow to Vortex. In the guide’s documented setup, the mod appears in Vortex’s mod list and is installed and enabled by default; individual mods may require additional instructions.
- Check Vortex’s mod list. If the download completes, use the list and any prompts in Vortex to confirm the mod’s status and handle any game-specific steps.
The labels and screens in Vortex can change over time, so follow the current prompts if they differ from this general flow.
If clicking “Mod manager download” does not open Vortex
Nexus Mods manager links use the nxm:// protocol. Vortex normally associates itself with these links when opened, but browser or system link handling can prevent the handoff. Make sure Vortex is installed and open, and check whether the browser is asking you to allow the link to open in the app. If the link still does not reach Vortex, use the manual import route below if you have the file already.

Import a mod file you already downloaded
In Vortex, drag the local mod file onto the Drop File(s) area. The Vortex guide says the app can turn a non-archive file or folder into an archive during import. Once it appears in the mod list, follow any installation notes for that specific mod and game.

Choose the route that matches your situation

What to check when a mod is not ready to use
- Game match: Confirm the mod targets the game you selected in Vortex.
- Mod instructions: Read the page for requirements or extra installation steps; the manager workflow does not make every mod universally compatible.
- Download handoff: If the manager button does nothing, check whether your browser or system is allowing the
nxm://link to open Vortex. - Import status: For a local file, verify that it appears in Vortex after dropping it into the import area, then follow the mod’s instructions.
