Plutonium for Black Ops 2 is a free launcher and client modification, not a free copy of Black Ops II. To play, install the legitimate BO2 game files—most commonly through Steam—then download plutonium.exe from Plutonium’s official site, sign in, and point the T6 setup to your BO2 installation folder.
Current-in-2026 warning: Plutonium does not currently provide a free BO2 download. Do not use old torrent links, cracked copies, repacks, or unofficial “full T6” downloads. The supported setup is the official Plutonium launcher plus locally installed, legitimate Black Ops II files.
What Plutonium BO2 actually is
Plutonium T6 is a community-focused client and modification for Call of Duty: Black Ops II. In Plutonium’s terminology, T6 MP is the Black Ops II Multiplayer experience and T6 ZM is the Zombies experience. The client adds a separate way to access community servers, mods, and other community features using the original game data.
These are three different things:
| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| Steam BO2 | The original Black Ops II installation containing the game files. |
| Plutonium | The free launcher and client modification that uses those files. |
| T6 MP / T6 ZM | Plutonium’s Multiplayer and Zombies modes for Black Ops II. |
Plutonium is not affiliated with or endorsed by Activision or the original copyright holders. It also does not replace every part of the original PC release. If you specifically want the unmodified campaign, Steam achievements, or a feature that requires the standard Steam executable, launch BO2 through Steam instead.

What you need before installing
- A fully updated 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC is the practical target.
- A DirectX 11-compatible graphics card.
- Call of Duty: Black Ops II game files from Steam or another legitimate source.
- The required BO2 Multiplayer and/or Zombies files installed locally.
- A free Plutonium forum account.
- At least 500 MB of free space on the C: drive for Plutonium itself, in addition to the storage required by BO2 and any installed content.
Plutonium’s official requirements page lists 64-bit Windows 8.1 with .NET Framework 4.7.2 as a legacy minimum, Windows 10 version 1607 or later as a recommended option, and Windows 11 as supported. Windows 7 is not supported. Because Windows 8.1 is obsolete, use a fully updated Windows 10 or Windows 11 system where possible. See the official system requirements before troubleshooting compatibility.
The official requirements do not specify a universal “8 GB RAM” or “25 GB free space” Plutonium requirement. Available storage for the Steam game depends on the installation and content you choose, so check the current Steam BO2 listing rather than relying on figures from third-party guides.
Step 1: Install Black Ops II legitimately
The documented and simplest route is to install Call of Duty: Black Ops II through Steam:
Open the official Black Ops II Steam listing
- Install or open Steam and sign in to the account that owns BO2.
- Purchase or install Black Ops II through the official Steam listing, subject to current regional availability and pricing.
- In Steam, check that the BO2 Multiplayer and Zombies components you intend to use are installed.
- Optionally launch the relevant Steam components once so Steam can complete its first-run setup.
You do not need to assume that the campaign is essential if your goal is only Plutonium Multiplayer or Zombies. The relevant Multiplayer and Zombies files are the important components for those modes, although Steam’s installation layout and component labels can change.
Plutonium does not supply BO2 or DLC files. Older videos, cached pages, and forum posts may mention a Plutonium-provided BO2 torrent, but that is not the current supported method. Plutonium’s current position is explained in its official forum notice about BO2 game files.
Step 2: Find the BO2 installation folder
Plutonium needs the folder that actually contains the Black Ops II files. The most reliable way to find it is through Steam:
- Open Steam and select your Library.
- Right-click the Black Ops II entry.
- Choose Manage → Browse local files.
- Keep the folder that opens available; this is the directory you should select in Plutonium.
A common Steam installation path is:
C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonCall of Duty Black Ops II
That path is only an example. Your library may be on another drive or in a custom folder, such as D:SteamLibrarysteamappscommonCall of Duty Black Ops II.
Do not select:
C:or another drive root;- the general Steam folder;
- the general
steamappscommonfolder; - your Documents folder;
- a desktop shortcut;
- a parent folder that does not contain the BO2 files.
If Steam’s Browse local files command opens a folder, select that exact folder—not one level above it.
Step 3: Download the official Plutonium launcher
Download the launcher from Plutonium’s official installation guide. The guide currently links to this official CDN download:
https://cdn.plutonium.pw/updater/plutonium.exe
Save plutonium.exe anywhere convenient, such as your desktop or a dedicated Plutonium folder. It does not need to be placed inside the Steam directory.
Avoid launchers from YouTube descriptions, file-sharing sites, “preinstalled” bundles, cracks, repacks, and old torrent instructions. Even if an unofficial package appears to work, it can contain altered executables or outdated files and is not the current supported installation route.
Step 4: Open Plutonium and connect it to BO2
Use this sequence:
Open plutonium.exe
→ Sign in with your Plutonium forum account
→ Select Black Ops 2 / T6
→ Click SETUP
→ Select the BO2 installation folder
→ Save or apply the path
→ Click PLAY
- Open
plutonium.exe. - Allow the launcher to install or update its own client files.
- Sign in with your Plutonium forum credentials. If you do not have an account, create one through the official installation documentation and Plutonium forum.
- Select the Black Ops 2 or relevant T6 entry in the launcher.
- Click SETUP.
- Browse to the exact folder opened by Steam’s Manage → Browse local files command.
- Save or apply the selected path.
If you need to change the location later, use Game Settings beside the Play button and select the correct directory again. Plutonium’s interface may change slightly as the launcher updates, but the important action remains the same: choose the folder containing the BO2 files.
Step 5: Launch T6 Multiplayer or Zombies
Return to the Black Ops 2/T6 entry after setup and click PLAY. Depending on the launcher interface, you may then choose between:
- T6 Multiplayer for BO2 multiplayer servers and community multiplayer content;
- T6 Zombies for BO2 Zombies and supported community Zombies content.
The expected result is a Plutonium-modified BO2 client rather than the standard Steam game launch. Plutonium’s T6 setup is aimed at Multiplayer and Zombies; do not treat it as a guaranteed replacement for the original campaign or every Steam-only feature.

Fix “Invalid Game Path” or “Invalid Game Folder”
This error usually means that Plutonium was given the wrong directory or that the selected BO2 installation is incomplete.
Use this recovery path:
- Open Steam.
- Right-click Black Ops II in your Library.
- Select Manage → Browse local files.
- Copy or note the folder that opens.
- Open Plutonium’s Game Settings for T6.
- Select that exact folder.
- Apply the change and try PLAY again.
The most common mistake is selecting the Steam folder or steamappscommon folder instead of the final Call of Duty Black Ops II directory. If Steam opens the correct directory but Plutonium still rejects it, verify the game files using the next section.

Fix missing-file errors and initialization failures
Messages mentioning files such as default_mp_controls.cfg, code_pre_gfx, or similar assets generally indicate incomplete, damaged, or incorrectly selected game files.
- Check that BO2 Multiplayer and Zombies are installed if you are trying to use both modes.
- In Steam, right-click BO2 and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to replace missing or damaged files.
- Reopen Plutonium and confirm that its T6 path points to the same BO2 folder.
Steam may report that it found and replaced files, or that the verification completed without changes. Either result is useful: it confirms whether the installation itself was incomplete. Plutonium’s official repair guide is the authority for current T6 repair steps.
Do not attempt to fix missing files by downloading random individual DLLs or replacing the installation with an unofficial repack. Repair the legitimate Steam installation first.
Fix “Failed to check for updates” or launcher update problems
The Plutonium launcher normally updates itself. Do not routinely download a replacement launcher from a third-party mirror or manually overwrite launcher files while it is running.

- Check whether antivirus or firewall software is blocking the updater.
- If the problem appears network-related, test a different DNS configuration.
- Try with a VPN disabled or enabled as a diagnostic step. VPN routing can either cause or resolve connectivity problems.
Only delete the files named in the official update procedure, and make sure the launcher and game are closed first. The updater’s behavior and launcher filenames can change, so use the current documentation rather than treating an old workaround as permanent.
What to do if antivirus flags Plutonium
Plutonium’s documentation says antivirus detections can occur because the client modifies game processes in memory. That is the project’s explanation for possible heuristic or generic detections; it is not an independent guarantee that every copy of every executable is safe.
Use this safer approach:
- Download only from the official Plutonium domain or its official CDN.
- Keep Windows, Defender, and your security software enabled.
- Do not disable antivirus globally just to make an unknown download run.
- If the file came from an unofficial source, delete it rather than whitelisting it.
- If you verified the official source and your security product is blocking the client, follow the official antivirus guidance.
- If an exclusion is genuinely necessary, limit it to the Plutonium directory instead of excluding an entire drive or system.
Plutonium identifies this common local directory:
C:Users<username>AppDataLocalPlutonium
A specific malware family detection deserves more caution than a generic heuristic warning. Stop, quarantine the file, and investigate the detection rather than blindly allowing it. No download guide can promise that an executable is universally risk-free.
Do you need Steam ownership verification?
Do not confuse ordinary play with server hosting. Plutonium introduced Steam ownership verification in 2023, but the announcement specifically began with server owners who need verified ownership to create new server keys. The current public installation guide does not establish that every ordinary player must complete a separate ownership-verification process before launching T6.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →If the launcher shows a verification prompt, or if you are preparing to host a server, use the following process:
- Start Steam and sign in to the account containing the legitimate BO2 license.
- Open the updated Plutonium launcher.
- Open Game Settings for the relevant game.
- Choose Verify Ownership if that option is shown.
- Confirm that the game appears on the Plutonium forum’s Steam Games page.
The ownership announcement says the actual base game must be verified; a dedicated-server variant does not qualify. It also says DLC ownership is not required for ownership verification. That does not mean DLC map files are supplied or that DLC-dependent content will work without the relevant files installed.
Server hosting has additional requirements involving server keys, ports, account status, and configuration. Consult Plutonium’s server-key documentation rather than applying server-owner instructions to a normal player installation.

DLC is separate from the base-game ownership check and separate from the Plutonium launcher. Plutonium does not provide BO2 map packs, Nuketown Zombies, or other DLC files.

The Steam listing identifies BO2’s associated DLC, including map packs and Nuketown Zombies content. If a server or mode requires DLC, the relevant content must exist in your legitimate local installation. The fact that DLC ownership is not required for the ownership-verification process does not mean that DLC is free, automatically installed, or available to join without the necessary files.
For DLC-specific problems, check the current Plutonium DLC discussion and the Steam installation’s available content.
Playing Plutonium BO2 with friends
If Plutonium launches correctly but friends cannot join, the installation is probably working and the problem is instead related to party settings, firewalls, or router networking.
For T6, Plutonium’s recommended connection steps are:
- Have both players follow each other on the Plutonium forums.
- Set party privacy to Open where appropriate.
- Open the in-game friends list.
- Send or accept the invitation.
- If joining fails, have the other player host the session.
- If necessary, configure the host’s router to forward UDP port 3074.
Router firewalls, antivirus firewalls, carrier-grade NAT, and other network settings can prevent a connection even when both installations are correct. The official custom-games guidance covers friends, hosting, and the UDP 3074 suggestion.
Plutonium versus launching BO2 through Steam
| Choose Plutonium when you want | Choose standard Steam BO2 when you want |
|---|---|
| Community server browsing | The original unmodified game |
| Community-hosted multiplayer or Zombies experiences | The original campaign experience |
| Plutonium’s separate client environment | Steam-native launching and achievements |
| Community modifications and supported custom content | Content that specifically depends on the standard Steam executable |
You can keep the Steam installation and use either launch route for its intended purpose. Plutonium is an additional client layered on top of the BO2 files, not a replacement for the complete official release.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Plutonium BO2 free?
The Plutonium launcher and modification are free. Black Ops II game files and DLC are separate and must come from a legitimate installation. Plutonium’s current supported download is the client, not a free BO2 game download.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Can Plutonium download the full Black Ops II game for me?
No. Plutonium currently does not provide BO2 game files or DLC files. Install BO2 through Steam or another legitimate source, then point Plutonium to that installation.
Do I need the BO2 campaign to play Plutonium?
If you only want T6 Multiplayer or Zombies, the relevant Multiplayer and Zombies files are the important components. Do not assume the campaign is always required, but make sure the modes you want are installed and repair the Steam installation if files are missing.
Why does Plutonium say my game path is invalid?
You probably selected a parent folder such as Steam or steamappscommon. In Steam, use Manage → Browse local files for BO2 and select the exact folder that opens.
Does every Plutonium player have to verify Steam ownership?
Not necessarily. Plutonium’s ownership announcement specifically describes verification for server owners and server keys, while the public installation guide does not state that every ordinary player must complete a separate verification step before launching. If the launcher shows a prompt, use its Game Settings → Verify Ownership option with Steam running.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

For the current supported setup, install legitimate Black Ops II Multiplayer and/or Zombies files, download plutonium.exe from Plutonium’s official documentation, sign in, select Black Ops 2/T6, choose the exact BO2 folder through SETUP, and click PLAY. If the path is rejected, rediscover it through Steam’s Manage → Browse local files command and verify the game files before trying unofficial downloads.
