1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse your Linux distribution’s package manager for software that is available in configured repositories. Use curl or GNU Wget for a direct HTTP or HTTPS file, and use SSH-based scp, SFTP, or rsync when the file is on another computer. Before running anything unfamiliar, verify its checksum and, when available, the publisher’s cryptographic signature.

1. Identify the VPS and the destination first
Commands differ between Debian-family, RPM-family, and SUSE systems. Confirm the operating system, current account, working directory, storage, and destination before downloading.
cat /etc/os-release
uname -a
id
pwd
df -h
/etc/os-release shows the distribution and release. uname -a reports the kernel and architecture, which matters when choosing a binary. id tells you whether the shell is running as root or a normal user. df -h helps prevent a large download from filling the filesystem.
#1 Best Overall
Choose a controlled working directory
Prefer a directory owned by your normal account, such as ~/downloads, rather than downloading directly into /root or a system directory.
mkdir -p ~/downloads
cd ~/downloads
Use sudo only when a package manager needs administrative access or when the final destination is deliberately protected, such as /usr/local/bin or a service directory. Keeping the download unprivileged limits the damage from a mistaken URL or a malicious archive.

Repositories provide package metadata, dependency resolution, update handling, and the distribution’s signature policy. That is normally safer and easier to maintain than downloading an arbitrary archive for software that is already packaged.
| Distribution family | Refresh metadata | Install command | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Debian and Ubuntu | sudo apt update |
sudo apt install package-name |
Packages from configured APT repositories |
| Fedora, RHEL, CentOS Stream and other RPM systems | Handled by DNF as needed | sudo dnf install package-name |
Packages from configured RPM repositories |
| SUSE Linux | Handled by Zypper as needed | sudo zypper install package-name |
Packages from configured SUSE repositories |
Debian and Ubuntu
sudo apt update
sudo apt install package-name
Run apt update before installation so the local package index is current. Replace package-name with the actual package identifier. A successful installation usually places executables in a standard path and registers files with the package database, making later updates and removal straightforward.
Fedora, RHEL and CentOS Stream
sudo dnf install package-name
DNF resolves dependencies and applies repository policy. Its download plugin can also retrieve binary or source RPMs, select a destination directory, print package URLs, and resolve dependencies without immediately installing the package. Use those features when you need an offline package set or want to inspect what would be downloaded.
SUSE
sudo zypper install package-name
Zypper performs dependency resolution against enabled repositories. If a package is unavailable, check the repository configuration rather than substituting an unverified archive immediately.

Third-party repositories and signing keys
When software is not in the distribution repositories, use the publisher’s documented repository configuration for your exact distribution and release. Repository configuration packages commonly install a GPG key so package metadata and packages can be validated. On Ubuntu, store third-party keys in a dedicated keyring and configure the repository to use that key; do not place a key in a broad, implicitly trusted location or accept an unauthenticated repository prompt blindly.
Rank #2
Confirm the repository’s distribution codename, architecture, and signing-key instructions before adding it. A repository intended for a different release can install incompatible libraries even when the package manager reports success.
3. Download a direct HTTP or HTTPS file with curl
curl can write downloaded bytes to standard output or to a file. For a VPS download, explicitly choose the output behavior so an archive does not accidentally flood your terminal.
Save under a chosen local name
curl -fL -o app.tar.gz https://example.com/releases/app.tar.gz
-o app.tar.gzselects the local filename.-Lfollows HTTP redirects, which many release pages use.-ffails on HTTP errors instead of saving an error document as if it were the archive.
Keeping the name explicit is useful when the URL contains a query string, a generic path, or a changing remote filename.
Keep the remote filename
curl -fLO https://example.com/releases/app.tar.gz
Uppercase -O tells curl to derive the local name from the final URL. Use it only when the publisher’s filename is suitable for your directory.
Improve resilience without weakening TLS
curl --retry 3 -fL -o app.tar.gz https://example.com/releases/app.tar.gz
--retry 3 retries transient failures. Inspect the hostname, URL, and certificate when a transfer fails. Do not add an option that disables certificate verification merely to make a connection succeed; that removes the protection that authenticates HTTPS.
Understand curl’s default output
Without -o or -O, curl writes the response body to standard output. That is useful for a small text response, but dangerous for a binary archive. A redirect can also lead to an HTML error page; combining -f and -L, then checking the resulting file, avoids many silent mistakes.
SSH transfers with curl
curl also supports SFTP and SCP URLs with SSH-key authentication. Use this when the source server exposes an SSH transfer endpoint and you need curl’s scripting behavior, but ensure the key has the minimum permissions and that the remote host is the expected one.
Rank #3
4. Download with GNU Wget
Wget is file-oriented and designed for non-interactive retrieval. It supports HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, retry behavior, recursive retrieval, and certificate controls.
Basic download and naming
wget -O app.tar.gz https://example.com/releases/app.tar.gz
-O writes to the exact local path you specify. Wget also accepts a URL without -O and normally creates a file based on the remote name.
Resume an interrupted transfer
wget -c https://example.com/releases/app.tar.gz
-c continues a partial file when the server supports range requests. If the server does not support ranges, Wget may restart or report that continuation is impossible; compare the resulting file with the publisher’s checksum before using it.
Inspect response headers
wget --server-response -O app.tar.gz https://example.com/releases/app.tar.gz
--server-response prints HTTP response details, which can reveal redirects, authorization failures, content types, or a server that does not support the requested range. Keep certificate verification enabled. A TLS error should lead you to correct the hostname, certificate chain, system clock, or CA package—not to disable checks.
5. Curl or Wget: choose by the transfer you need
| Need | curl | Wget |
|---|---|---|
| Explicit output | Use -o for a chosen name or -O for the remote name |
Use -O for a chosen path or the default remote filename behavior |
| Redirects | Add -L |
Handles normal retrieval redirects in its file workflow |
| HTTP errors | Add -f so an error response fails |
Inspect the exit status and response details |
| Interrupted downloads | Use retry options; design your script around the server’s behavior | -c is convenient when range requests are supported |
| Automation style | Flexible for pipelines, HTTP APIs, and multiple protocols | Convenient for unattended file retrieval and retry-oriented jobs |
| SSH URLs | Supports SFTP and SCP with SSH-key authentication | Primarily used for HTTP, HTTPS, and FTP retrieval |
Neither tool verifies that a downloaded program is trustworthy merely because the connection used HTTPS. HTTPS protects the connection to the named host; checksum and signature verification establish whether the bytes match the publisher’s declared artifact.
6. Copy a file from your computer to the VPS
Use SSH-based tools when the file is on another machine rather than at a public URL. Run the following examples on the computer that currently holds the file.
Copy one file with scp
scp ./backup.tar.gz [email protected]:/srv/backups/
The source is local, [email protected] identifies the VPS account and host, and the final path is the destination directory. The destination account must have permission to write there.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Use a non-default SSH port and key
scp -P 2222 -i ~/.ssh/id_ed25519 ./backup.tar.gz [email protected]:/srv/backups/
For scp, uppercase -P selects the SSH port. The -i option selects a private key. Protect that key with filesystem permissions and a passphrase; never copy the private key to the VPS merely to make a transfer work.
Browse interactively with SFTP
sftp -P 2222 -i ~/.ssh/id_ed25519 [email protected]
Inside the SFTP session, commands such as put local-file /remote/path/, get /remote/path/file, pwd, and ls let you inspect both sides before transferring. SFTP is useful when you need to choose files interactively or create a directory before uploading.
Synchronize directories with rsync
rsync -avP -e 'ssh -p 2222' ./site/ [email protected]:/var/www/site/
-a preserves the directory structure and common metadata, -v reports activity, and -P combines progress output with partial-file handling. The trailing slash on ./site/ means “copy the contents of site”; omit it when you intend to create a nested site directory. Rsync is efficient for repeated or large transfers because it can avoid sending unchanged data.
Check the result and ownership
ssh -p 2222 [email protected] 'ls -lh /srv/backups/backup.tar.gz && stat /srv/backups/backup.tar.gz'
After transfer, check the owner, group, mode, size, and modification time. A file copied into a service directory may need ownership assigned to the service account, but do not make it world-writable as a shortcut.
7. Verify checksums and signatures before installation
Obtain the checksum and signing instructions from the same publisher that supplied the artifact. A common SHA-256 check is:
sha256sum app.tar.gz
Compare the complete hexadecimal output with the publisher’s SHA-256 value. A matching hash proves that your bytes match that published value; it does not, by itself, prove that the download page or checksum file was authentic.
Verify a signed checksum list
If the publisher supplies a signed checksum file, first verify its GPG signature with the publisher’s trusted public key. Only after the signature is valid should you trust the SHA-256 entry and compare it with your local file. Record which key fingerprint you trusted, where you obtained it, and the artifact version.
gpg --verify SHA256SUMS.asc SHA256SUMS
sha256sum app.tar.gz
The exact filenames and signature format vary. Follow the publisher’s documented command and confirm that GPG reports a valid signature from the expected key, not merely that a signature packet exists.
8. Inspect and extract archives cautiously
Do not extract an unfamiliar archive directly into a live service directory. List its contents first:
tar -tf app.tar.gz
Look for unexpected absolute paths, parent-directory components such as ../, executable installation scripts, and files that would overwrite configuration. Create a dedicated staging directory and extract there:
mkdir -p ~/staging/app
tar -xf app.tar.gz -C ~/staging/app
find ~/staging/app -maxdepth 2 -type f -printf '%pn'
Read the project’s installation instructions and identify the expected executable path before moving anything into production. If the archive contains a script, inspect it and run it only after verification. For a standalone binary, record its source URL, version, checksum, and final installation path so you can update or remove it later.
Prefer packages when they exist
A manually extracted archive generally lacks the package manager’s dependency tracking and update notifications. Choose the repository package when it provides the required version and features. Use a publisher archive when the package is unavailable, too old for your workload, or explicitly required by the software’s documentation, and then take responsibility for updates and rollback.

| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
apt install cannot locate a package |
Stale metadata, disabled repository, wrong package name, or unsupported release | Run sudo apt update, confirm the package name and release, and use the publisher’s repository instructions only when appropriate |
| HTTP download saves a small HTML file | Redirect, login page, 404 response, or server error | Use curl’s -fL, inspect headers with Wget, check the final URL, and compare the file type and checksum |
| TLS certificate verification fails | Wrong hostname, missing CA certificates, incorrect system clock, or a genuine certificate problem | Correct the endpoint or system configuration; do not disable certificate verification |
| Download stops partway through | Network interruption or server timeout | Retry with curl’s retry option or Wget -c; verify the final checksum |
scp reports permission denied |
Destination directory is not writable by the SSH account | Upload to the user’s home directory, then move the file with narrowly scoped sudo access |
| SSH connection uses the wrong port | Server listens on a non-default port | Pass -P to scp, -p to sftp, or include the port in rsync’s SSH command |
| Archive extracts files in unexpected places | Unsafe paths or an incorrectly chosen extraction directory | Stop, inspect with tar -tf, and extract into a new staging directory |
| Program will not execute | Wrong CPU architecture, missing shared libraries, absent execute bit, or incompatible release | Check uname -m, inspect dependencies and documentation, and use the distribution package when available |
10. A repeatable VPS download checklist
- Identify the distribution and architecture with
cat /etc/os-releaseanduname -a. - Confirm the destination, available space, and account ownership with
df -handid. - Create a user-owned staging directory rather than downloading as root.
- Install packaged software through
apt, dnf, orzypperwhenever a suitable package exists. - For a direct URL, use curl with
-fLand an explicit output name, or Wget with a deliberate output and resume option when needed. - For a file on another computer, choose
scpfor a single copy, SFTP for interactive work, orrsyncfor repeated directory synchronization. - Verify the SHA-256 checksum and validate a signed checksum list with GPG when the publisher provides one.
- List archive contents before extraction and stage the files away from the live service.
- Check ownership, permissions, architecture, dependencies, and the executable path.
- Record the version, source, checksum, and installation path for future updates or removal.
11. Applying the workflow to game-server files
A VPS used for a game server follows the same transfer rules as any other Linux workload. Download server binaries or mod archives into a staging directory, verify them, and only then place the approved files in the service account’s directory. Keep configuration, world saves, logs, and downloaded binaries in separate paths so an update cannot silently overwrite saved data.
When uploading a locally tested world or configuration, use rsync for repeated synchronization and preserve a backup before replacing the live copy. Restrict the service account’s permissions to its own directory, and avoid placing SSH keys, API tokens, database passwords, or private backups in directories readable by the game process or other users.
Quick Recap
12. Security rules worth keeping permanently
- Use HTTPS or SSH and verify the host you intended to contact.
- Keep TLS certificate checks enabled.
- Prefer signed packages, signed checksum lists, and repository metadata over anonymous archives.
- Run downloads as a normal user and elevate only the installation step that needs it.
- Do not execute an installer or binary before checking its origin, checksum, signature, architecture, and contents.
- Do not make a destination world-writable to bypass a permission error.
- Protect private SSH keys and never copy them to the VPS for convenience.
- Keep a record of versions and paths so you can reproduce, audit, or undo an installation.
